Mmm, is this confession time? I started to read A Game of Thrones, but just wasn't in the mood for all that political intrigue. I'd heard good things about it, but decided I wouldn't be doing it justice to read it in this frame of mind. So, I have the first two books, but reading them is on hold.

I am a Jordan fan, although yes he has his faults (Path of Daggers was one of the slowest books i've everrrrr read...). So having declared my biases....
What i found when i was reading Martin was I just couldn't connect with any of the characters. His stuff is realistic, true, but almost over-realistic. I just could not identify with any of the characters, because they all have such massive flaws- except Ned, and even he has a "illegal love child" (I was using ******* in its correct context, and it still got blanked out...) who brings up right in front of his wife. And then he dies. If i wanted to read about how base, cruel and evil people wanted to be, i'd go and read the damn newspaper. The portrait he paints of human nature is waaaay to bleak.
The only writing of Martin I actually enjoyed was the short story in the 'Legends' anthology, 'The Hedge Knight' or whatever it was called. It, shock! Horror!, actually left you with a sense of hope.
Anyway, just my two cents worth....

Seriously though, it's a little disenchanting when you think that SE will have put out 4 books before GRRM's one. I think it's almost time he put out another sample chapter to string us along!

The main difference here Caldazar is the potential readers of both prolgues.
RJ's - People who have read all nine books and want to read the prologue early. With it they get some tacked on Q&A session or something. That's it.
GRRM's - People who have read all three books and want to get the prologue early. They also get the magazine itself. Subscribers of Dragon get the prologue with no additional cost. Casual readers get a mag they sometimes read plus an unexpected prologue.
You see, from Martin doing it there is the potential of additional readers who regualrly or sometimes read Dragon. With Jordan the only people who are going to buy it is the existing fans. And even the ones who do buy it just to get the Martin prologue will also get the pretty thick mag itself, rather than just a Q&A session, and, if past interviews of RJ are anything to go on, probably revealing very little new information.

I agree with you guys to the extent that Martin can write some interesting characters. For example, in the first book there was Jon Snow and Ned Stark. I could identify with them because i could see something of myself, or what i wanted to be in them, and i liked them. Most of the rest of the cast, however, didn't deliver. I must say Steve that i am not familiar with most of the characters you mention becuase i only read the first two books and that was a fair while back, so maybe Martin's characters have improved and become more interesting as the series has progressed.
However, i believe there are plenty of other authors out there who are better and have hooked me into caring for their characters far, far more than Martin did with his series (not only Jordan but SE, China Mieville, Ian Irvine etc.). You guys like his writing and his characters and i respect that. But i respectfully disagree with your views and we'll leave it at that gentlemen, shall we?...

Nope, sorry, having read ALL the books in the series, i can wholeheartedly say that Martin is a writer who does not appeal to me and i will not be reading any more of his books. The only piece of writing of Martin's which i have definitely liked was his short story in the 'Legends' collection.

Yeah, but this really makes me appreciate SE's work rate. He's done a book and 3 novellas in just over a year!
Still you've gotta wonder just how much farting around GRRM's been doing - this book's been in the workd for gods know how long... wasn't he on chapter 37 (??) in his last update?!
