okay, everything has been said on this so I won't be long
if you really want to know what this series is about, read Erebus synopsis. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best (it's objective. well, almost)
What i'll do here is describe my reactions
maybe that will help you Paran
I bought a Game of Thrones 'cause everyone was praising it, including a certain Robert Jordan (who at the time I thought was writing the best series ever) and Orson Scott Card (who was and is still at the very top of my list). And it won the Nebula of course
Now, to be frank, I was like Paran at the end of the book.
It was good, you can even say very good, but it was nowhere close to the Eye of the World. I didn't like the writing, all the caracters confused me, and, most frustrating, each time it was beginning to become interesting, the chapter ended brutally
the second book was pretty dark: I then begun to understand that everything could happen to the main caracters. "Life is not a song "as the Hound says. That in itself put this book far apart from the usual fantasy stuff you read
but there was a little something else that also convinced me to read on and buy the next book: as Erebus has already pointed out, there is no magic in the first book. It appears at the very end. And then you see the impact. It comes slowly but it's there. Fascinating.
Book 3 is at this time the best. It's the very center of this story. It's the book that tells you that a Song of Ice and Fire is THE fantasy series. A masterpiece. A must
at the end of this book, you really, really, really want to know what happens next, where the fusk is the next book, please give it to me...
you surely have understood: a Song of Ice and Fire is the best fantasy series currently
so if you don't like the 1st book, don't you worry, keep reading, and if at the end you still don't like it, you can seriously ask yourself whether you are human

Matthew Woodring Stiver's hero, Caine (in Heroes die and Blade of Tyshalle) is definitely one of the coolest badass ever. He is an Actor/Assassin, meaning he is paid to kill people on another wolrd to entertain people on Earth. But he also got a sens of honour(which he won't let interfere with his survival, mind you). And when it comes to rescue the one and only woman he loves, well he is the meanest, cruelest and most determined bastard in the entire universe. Now there is a hero I would like to see more often in heroic fantasy. I so tire of those do-gooders who waste their life fighting to save the world.

As far as I remember, the Hugo (and the Nebula, too) is a highly "american" award. You're not published in the US = you're not likely to get it.
Still, giving it to the Potter books is ridiculous.

Its definately not better than Erikson, but its still a good book. Im 1/4 of the way through the second book - cant remember what its called, and enjoying it a lot. Its a completely different type of fantasy writing from Erikson though, its only from the important people's pov, the Lord and stuff, wheras Erikson concentrates more on the lower ranking people much more. He still shows commanders an stuff aswell, obviously, but he adds a more soldier-aspected view than Martin.

I have a feeling that GRRM doesn't know what to do with his story now...

I found it myself. Was looking about forums that were linked to my favourite authors. Thats how I found here, and thats how I found BwB.

There was a discussion somewhere that perhaps Arya, Jon, Sansa and Bran would develop into four types of main character, i.e.
Bran=Wizard
Sansa=Politician
Arya=Assassin
Jon=General

While Martin isn't nearly as flashy with magic and battles, his characterization is better than Erikson's. Just my opinion though.

Although I like Martin a bit better, I feel damn lucky we have both GRRM and Erikson. These guys have saved the fantasy genre for me.
Robert Jordan and Goodkind almost made me give up fantasy for good.

The Hedge Knight is probably the best story in Legends .

The prologue to A Feast of Crows , entitled Arms of the Kraken is available in the March issue of Dragon magazine iirc (check his official site www.georgerrmartin.com )

Do I think T'lan Imass are hard? Not really. More like crunchy .

That's weird that you can't connect to martin's characters. It's weird because that's one of the most common complaints people give when talking about Erikson on another board I frequent, namely the asoiaf (Martin) board.
Martin's characterization is generally given as one of his strongest points.

IMO, both have great characters, and I have no problem caring about either's characters. But I would give the edge to Martin without a doubt.
I don't, however, see how you can put Jordan above Martin as a fantasy writer, in any regard.

I always think, present company excluded of course, that there's something unpleasant lurking in people who avoid drinking, gambling, table talk and pretty women

How do you know this?

I agree the B*****d of Bolton deserves a good shoe-in.

I thought Sandor was left bleeding to death under a tree by Arya? He surely must confront his brother in the end.The "mountain that rides" is one of the most menacing characters in modern fantasy.

okay. Justify GRRM. hmmm....

well, to start with, much like old Erikson, there are no straightforward 'good' or 'evil' characters - (at least not yet) although there are a number of psychopaths that you would never want to meet up a dark alley. Unlike many fantasy series where the reason for war is usually to justify a prophecy or bring greater glory to one sides god, it's primarily about a dynastic war of succession that errupts in the wake of an earlier civil war, so it's somewhat easier to believe than the normal - "this war has been long prophesised" routine.

GRRM has just added a FAQ section to his site.Heres an example;


Q: Are there any plans for a movie or television series based on A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE?

A: Not at present. Anything is possible, of course, but the sheer size and complexity of the books would make them very difficult to film. Peter Jackson is doing an astonishing job of bringing Tolkien's trilogy to the film, but he's needed three movies to do so. All three volumes of LORD OF THE RINGS put together are about as long as A STORM OF SWORDS. By that standard, it would require nine films just to cover the three books I've published so far, and probably nine more for the rest of the series. No studio is ever going to commit to eighteen films. A more feasible approach might be to shoot the series as a television miniseries, but it would need to be a long miniseries, along the lines of ROOTS and SHOGUN, and the networks seldom produce series of that length these days. So I think the chances for a film or TV series are slim. Sorry.

I don't have a problem if GRRM chooses to pursue other things apart from writing AFFC. Do you think he should be chained to his computer until its done?

I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't come out till 2005. And if it came out in 2006, I would find that pretty funny.

But I would still enjoy the book!

@Wimbold - Oh I'm with you on the Goodkind™ cut-ups. I can't stand the guy either. Posted Image

Anyway, I hate to keep using comparisons here but musicians don't tour until they actually put the album in stores so I don't see why an author should be touring when the book hasn't been released yet. Now don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of his series, I'm just starting to get a little impatient as I've seen three Erikson books released since a Storm of Swords (not to mention MT will probably beat A Feast for Crows out anyway).
