Enter the New York Times bestselling Malazan universe... at a time that sets the stage for all the tales already told

Steven Erikson entered the pantheon of great fantasy writers with his debut Gardens of the Moon. Now Erikson returns with a trilogy that takes place before the events of the Malazan Book of the Fallen. The Forge of Darkness takes readers to Kurald Galain, the warren of Darkness, and tells an epic tale of a realm whose fate plays a crucial role in the fall of the Malazan Empire.

It's a conflicted time in Kurald Galain, the warren of Darkness, where Mother Dark reigns. But this ancient land was once home to many a power… and even death is not quite eternal. The commoners' great hero, Vatha Urusander, longs for ascendency and Mother Dark's hand in marriage, but she has taken another Consort, Lord Draconus, from the faraway Dracon Hold. The idea of this union sends fissures throughout the realm, and as the rumors of civil war burn through the masses, an ancient power emerges from the long dead seas. Caught in the middle of it all are the Sons of Darkness, Anomander, Adarist, and Silchas Ruin of the Purake Hold.

Steven Erikson brings to life this ancient and important tale set in the world he introduced in the Malazan Book of the Fallen in a way that should appeal to fans of George R. R. Martin.

Thanks for posting!

Veeeeerrrrrrry interesting. I know that these things are often a little off and not even necessarily written or seen by the author, but still...

Dracon Hold vs Purake Hold - the former makes it sound like a seperate realm, but then again we know Draconus first emerged pretending to be an Andii from a remote outpost or something like that, and then Purake Hold makes it sound like family titles.

I'm curious how the Purake thing is going to go with Dragnipur, if at all, given that we've heard Rake called Andomander Dragnipurake, making the common part of the names not likely a coincidence.

Super excited!!!

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Cheers! I was checking the amazon.co.uk site for a synopsis for the last few weeks. Nothing there.
Very interesting. Have we heard of Vatha Urusander before? I don't think so. Was he metioned in TtH?
Didn't SE say this trilogy was more Shakesperian unlike the Book of the Fallen which was inspired by the Iliad.
I wonder if Hamlet is an inspiration for this trilogy.

Awesome, although I hate the part about it appealing to fans of GRRM. That's just put there because GRRM has become so commercialized. I'm sure publishers all around the world are trying to find ways to fit in, "It's like GRRM!" to fantasy books in an effort to get more people to buy them.

Not to say I don't like GRRM. I just hate how commercialized his series is now.

Anyway, as I said, awesome synopsis. Can't wait.
uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.

Sea of Light? Perhaps the Liosan?
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

What if it's the KCCM or the KCNR doing the if-by-sea route again?

It's that mysterious fearsome thing that wears Drift Avalii as a hat.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

What if... they were lobstrosities and Erikson is connecting his works to the Dark Tower?

Richard K. Morgan, chew on that!

MAEL IS PISSED

AT YOU KIDS NOT TURNING YOUR DAMN MUSIC DOWN
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Think Hamlet too. Anomander's gonna brood forever whether in the mind to suffer and then kill his mothers consort and all his Light buddies, turning Mommy away from her children and laying waste to Kharkanas.

The synopsis sound really good! I have a feeling these will be better than the main series and much tighter storylines!

What is the other trilogy supposed to be? Sequels that happen after The Crippled God, or prequels as well?

Kallor wasn't alive back then was he? It's going to be too long before we see him again.

Karsa Orlong, post-MBotF.

Edit: There's even a forum here for it and everything called "Toblakai Trilogy".

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

The only ancient sea that springs to mind has to be the Vitr. And I d say the ancient entity has to be Tiam. I like the idea of MD being an entity and also something before the Andii. Apparently before MD reigned it was home to many a power so who knows what that means. During a recent reread of TTH I thought that MD may have forged a realm from choas in a long running battle against entities of a similar elemental nature.

IS anyone else thrown slightly by (probably bullshit) prelude that KG and the realm of dark is crucial to the fll of the Malazan Empire? ITs probably just an effort to link it in but still...

Could the ancient power maybe be the Eres? Seems like they were around before the Imass, or am I not remembering correctly?

Also I'm not sure what fall they are talking about. So far, the Malazan empire has not fallen,
