Back before high school me and my friends started creating space fleets for an attempt at a space battle game we were trying to create.
My flagship had a name that started with -Dark- and subsequently it became my e-mail address. It was my first internet account.
After that almost all my usernames started with -Dark- as a conducting line from the original address.
When I alighted here well I signed up with Darkwatch. Never changed it since. Of all those I've had it is the second best after the original e-mail account. It also fitted with all the lurking I did at the beginning.

I chose Sir Thursday way back in the depths of time because...I liked Thursdays
. Yep, that's pretty much it. Sir Thursday sounded kind of cool, so I went with that - it's pretty much my standard online account name everywhere I go. I think when I first signed up to the forums I was called Vox (the name of the computer in the film version of Time Machine...terrible film, but the name stuck in my head and I liked the Latin connotations), but eventually decided to bring it inline with who I am everywhere else on the net.

"Who Am I?" by: Bliss Fulnite
One day a person, being curious as people will, asked to know me, who I was and what I was made of. This left me perplexed. How could I answer? I could research and give my chemical composition as a scientist might, or I could look up my pedigree as any good breeder will, but what would this say about ME?
My wondering brought me to wandering, and before long I was lost. "Who am I?" I asked aloud. "What am I?"
A gypsy passing by heard me and answered "You are Bliss". "What is Bliss?" I asked hopefully. "Bliss is dancing barefoot to a Grateful Dead song" she answered, then danced away before I could even respond "This is me?"
As lost as before, I ventured on. There being no point in stopping since I didn't yet know where I was headed. Deep in thought, I wondered out loud again "Who am I? What am I?" and then I hit it. Literally. And after he rubbed his head and I had apologized profusely, the punk looked at me speculatively and answered "You are Bliss."
Disappointed I sighed, 'Yes, I've heard that before, but what IS Bliss?"
He clicked his tongue-ring against his teeth while he thought a moment then laughed, "Bliss is a party in the desert, with a cool band playing."
"This is me?" I asked, but he was singing a snatch from some remembered song to himself and didn't hear me as he walked away.
"WHAT AM I?!" I yelled out to the world around me, and EVERYONE turned and stared. I was so ashamed that I quickly moved on.
"Who am I? What am I? Who am I?..." I muttered to myself. A knight walking my way, being noble paused and sized me up with his steely gaze. "You would be Bliss." He stated.
"So I've been TOLD!" I spat disgusted.
"Bliss is a CHALLENGE! As in between two warriors in battle!" He threatened, with his hand resting on his sword hilt.
I curtsied and quickly backed away. And THEN I did it. Lost and muddled, I didn't watch my footing and fell. Considering how flustered I'd been, I was actually surprised that I hadn't fallen into the Well of Confusion earlier, and while I fell I found myself wondering if there would be someone to ask "Where am I?" to when I reached the bottom.
Sure enough, when I reached the bottom of the Well I came face to face with the problem.
Bliss was not a thing to be defined in shape or colour, although shape and colour were both aspects of the overall picture. Rather Bliss was made up of a variety of things. Bliss was a woman who liked dancing barefoot, listening to rebel music in the desert, and fighting challenges... and all so much more! Bliss was dirty vodka martinis, long talks, a mountain summit and a city night.
As I looked in the mirror at myself... I thought "How will I put this into words?"

I used to be a big Transformers nerd back in the '00s, and hung out at the AllSpark forums, where I was known as TheGuruNow. After a big board upgrade when everyone needed to recreate their accounts, I decided I should make my new username more TF-centric, but I also wanted something uncommon yet easy-ish to remember. I was sitting at my computer pondering my new identity, when I looked over and saw, sitting on my scanner, the box of the Argentina-exclusive Transformer Salt-Man Z, and inspiration struck. My avatar is a self-modified version of M Sipher's mugshot artwork of the character.

May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I remember commenting on a similar thread some years ago, but here we go again.
I was probably finishing high school when I created the name Mej Kalahinen (later just Kalahinen) by altering a Finnish word for "me". At first the name belonged to a sword and sorcery character whose adventures I wrote as a hobby. When I joined this forum I picked the name for my account as it had originally meant "me". The last short story I wrote about the S&S character was hugely influenced by Erikson. I had just read an incredible book called Memories of Ice at that time.

I think I originally wanted some other name, but it was taken and so, having I believe just read DoD, I thought, wouldn't it be hilarious if there was a master of order like how Paran was jokingly called the Dragonmaster (total chaos, like how Azath are total order)? I must have been pretty tired or really bored because I felt so clever afterwards. I then proceeded to lurk for a few months, then begin to post again during a streak of irrational boredom, which led me to find mafia, which led me to miss a game sign up by one day, which led me to join PEN, which led me to play the next game, and so on. Thank you.

powerclaw was a warhammer-related name I came up with for my first actual online experience. It was for a game called Dawn of War (warhammer-related also) and it was the first time I ventured online to actually interact with people. I hadn't ever played anything online and I was blown away by how much fun I had. I ended up playing for quite a while, joining a guild called the Mercury Guard and getting pretty good. It's been years and years since then but I still keep this name for everything on the internet that is strictly for fun/hobbies. I was a terror in Halo online (the original, pistols fo' life!) It helps to be consistent for things like trading miniatures online and such as well. People can easily find my references online.
Now I kind of wish I'd picked a Malazan-related name (something like Bottle's Rat) but that's alright. At least I'll remember it forever

I uhh... Was going to, very creatively, make my username "Wade" back when I started using the internet to play various obscure mmo's. I noticed, the name would be taken fairly often. I added "-newb" to it, which obviously appealed to my then (and now) infantile and really very stupid sense of humour, to ensure that no-one would ever have chosen the name before me. Very probably one of the greatest and most interesting username origin stories you'll ever read.
I should publish it.
And then find a new username that I doesn't irritate me.

It's funny. Every few months a few new people realize that SMZ's avatar winks. I recall discovering it and it totally freaked me out too.
