As demonstrated in The Beard Thread I was blessed with facial follicles, and when I shaved the beard off to get a professional job I was not best pleased. But after a couple of months on the job I started letting my sideburns grow out. Since management at work didn't say anything I expanded into having an impressive set of Mutton Chops and keep them for a good 2 years and there was the motivational poster saying to respect the chops which was my original avatar. I had the chops when I discovered the Malazan Empire (the books anyway), hence the name.
On a side note, I should change it as I haven't had them for about 4.5 years, I grew out my epic beard and stopped shaving altogether... plus my wife who has a rock radio show gave me the nickname of Captain Beardface... excuse me while I go change it before some one takes it.

When I joined I signed up as Dutch Master of the Deck because Ganoes Paran was and still is one of my most favorite characters besides Quick Ben and I also liked the title of Master of the Deck.
Master of the Deck was taken, so I just put Dutch, my native language, in front of it.
I remember one of the people asking me when I joined and introduced myself if he could call me Dutch since he really liked the Predator reference and it stuck.
After a while I decided to shorten the name to Dutch since Dutch Master of the Deck is a rather large mouthful.
@ Loki: So the mechs in Mass Effect are named after you?

Can't see what else it could stand for.
As for my own moniker - Khellendros - it comes from years back when I though Dragonlance was the best fantasy there is (well, the original two trilogies are pretty good...right?!). One of the dragons in it was called Skie, but it turned out later he was like some uber-dragon overlord whose real name was Khellendros.
Also, it was the first name to pop into my head at the time. If I chose again I doubt I would pick it, but I'm happy with being called Khell on here.
As for the 'K0rbas' which currently appears to be my name, that's a temporary deformity as a result of over-exuberant Mafia playing, and will disappear in about ten days time.

I had three choices initially: Maybe (after the sapper), Cthulhu (after the great demon) and what I am now. I chose the third one.
My name came from reading about the siege of Y'ghatan. (I think I spelled it right)
So I figured the only way to kill a sapper is to make him blind.

Came up with Shiara because I didn't have a pseudonym when Loki and I put our heads together to write a dodgy/silly Stargate fanfic many many years ago

When I first started playing online games (okay it was only Age of Chaos and nothing else, still the best tick based strategy game I have ever played - back when there were large numbers of players) and messing about in online forums I was delving into celtic mythology and reading a fair bit of C.J. Cherryh's books. The concept of the Wild Hunt has always interested me and Gwynn ap Nudd is one of the less recognised figures who led the hunt on occasion. At teh time the name seemed to fit and I carried it over into the Malazan forums and a few others.

I tried a few names to start with - some were already taken, some just didn't feel right. (I found at the time that there are a LOT of character names from the books that had been taken by members that were no longer active after a few posts).
At the time I chose this name, 'Traveller' was an enigmatic figure found on an island, with a legendary sword and an unknown history, who didn't really want to be recognized. I had just spent a few years moving between two cities, finally leaving for a different part of the country entirely for a new start, while leaving a lot of stuff, good and bad, behind me.
It seemed kind of appropriate.
Thinking about it, I think I started out as 'Exile', but changed it to a more malaz-recognizable one later.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Reading these was lovely. Names are such wonderful things. I chose mine because it's my favorite game to play, even though here I mostly just face myself...funny, its hard NOT to sometimes, mostly. Scary, because I'm hardly unique to that regard. I would have also considered Symmetric as a name probably. But that would be too mocking.

Nocturnal is a nickname I've been using on a bunch of forums and it describes me perfectly, I can't function during the day.
