I joined in 08 and had been lurking for years. Actually just signed up to argue with someone in the old football vs rugby thread. I'm pretty sure it was Macros.

Anyway...I wanted QB of course, but he was taken. So I thought, whats the opposite of Quick Ben? Slow Ben. I'm pretty sure i was drunk at the time because i remember thinking it was hilarious.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

The first part of mine is obviously a QuickBen reference...the second is a tad more obscure. When I first NEEDED an internet handle many moons ago (late 90's) I was a huge FINAL FANTASY fan and FF8 had just come out with Squall as the lead character, after the 7th game with Cloud as the lead character...I felt the need to stay "elemental" in my naming and chose water...thus "Tidal" was how I went by myself for many years (on message boards, and in general). Imagine my chagrin when the 10th FINAL FANTASY game came out and the lead character's name was Tidus...make no mistake, my H20-based moniker came first.

Anyways, when I first showed up here I decided to mash my existing handle up with a Malazan character, and thus QuickTidal was born.

Oh and in a month-long homage to the anime SUMMER WARS I was known as King Kazma.

I originally wanted Tattersail back in 06, but it was taken I think. So I chose Grimhilde instead, being quite interested in mythology and such, also I think it sounds funny. And then there was a comment from Sombra, methinks, and I changed my name to Grimmybear...and then Illy set off an avalanche...

Ah, found it: http://forum.malazan...showtopic=21939

My name comes from a character in The Lees of Laughter's End, one of the Bauchlin and Korbal Broach books. The character may actually be an early version of the same character that sailed with Shurq (spelling?)

I needed a login and I didn't think going by my real name was a good idea. I like the number twelve so went with it. Oooooh exciting, me that is not. Who goes by a number anyway? Those boring, uncreative, beurocratic oafs that who.... Then why the hell did I pick it?

Oh! That's right! I like the number 12.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

I was originally 'jitsukerr' (from jujitsu and my surname, 'Kerr'), but people got confused and thought I sucked 'jit', whatever that is, and also that I was bad at spelling. So I wanted a new name, and I picked UseOfWeapons because it's vaguely martial, and because I love the Banks book.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

I had a Chocolate Lab named Charlie when I was growing up. He was pure-bred and his full moniker should we have ever put him in a dog show was RodeoRanch Chocolate Charles.

When I first started using the internet I had to come up with a commmon username and I looked at the big brown mutt lying next to me and RodeoRanch was born!

Hey, I take some credit for those names too.

My current incarnation is a reference to Green men, which I always like the mythology of. This particular reference is to the character from WoT, which ends within a year.

I am know as Cyphon, as that's my original forum name. Which is basically me changing the letters for Siphon. Because I am a leech. And I Siphon out the shit, and you never get everything from me. ect. ect. ect.

There was a while I was called infinity, as that particular stage of by Abyss worship where I attempted a TQB sponsored attack on Abyss by being the very anthesis of his forum presense. It was a short lived attack before I was forced to flee to my current incarnation.
Para todos todo, para nosotros nada.

Mine's the combination of characters out of my story I've been working on, also a variation of some ancient (or at least old) Central American gods.

When I signed up we had just finished reading Midsummer Night's Dream at school and I'm quite fond of this kind of trickster figures, to put it mildly.
For some time I had changed to Robin Goodfellow. Sadly, only two or three people got the joke.

I've made up so many stories over the years about why my handle is Loki that I forget which versions I've already told on the Forum. So to stop myself reusing the same story I'll just tell the actual origins of my name instead -

It's what my friend's call me.

(Actually, they call me Loki Mo but it tends to get shortened to Loki or Mo most of the time.)

For a time, my name was Lokirri because after one of the Forum changes I couldn't login to my account and my origin email that I had used to sign up with ceased to exist years ago so I made a new account with an obvious name. Thankfully, Brood fixed the issue for me once he realised the situation.

One of my favorite bands is Xiu Xiu, who are an avant garde noise pop/rock thing, but some of the primary members had a slightly more conventional band called Ten In the Swear Jar before that. Both bands lyrically focus on personal trauma, often with gallows humor, which I admire (and suspect Malazan fans in general might too). One of XITSJ's prettiest songs is called "Worry Boy" which is thematically about how severe anxiety can be crippling and can damage relationships. You can hear it here if you feel like it, but they're definitely a mileage-may-vary band. http://youtu.be/jy8XyOby5JY

Anyway, I like the concept, and then when I read GotM I saw that one of the poor ramshackle villages outside of Darujhistan was called Worrytown, which put a big old smile on my face. When I joined the board, I figured "worry boy" was a little too grandiose (or even a bit too emo) and Worrytown didn't make sense for a person, so I went with something a little closer to home, since I am prone to anxiety. Not to get too personal about it or nothin'. I just thought it combined a few things I loved.

Story time.

There are two stories on how I became known as Loki.

Story One: In fifth grade we were learning about Norse Mythology. Our teacher was telling us the names of some of the key players and then giving little descriptions about them. When he got Loki and started to describe him several of my classmates turned to look at me and my desk partner (and childhood friend) said, 'Well, Bob (people used to call be Bob), looks like we just found your true identity. Nice to meet you, Loki. I'm Nee'hole.' And so Loki Bob became my name but it usually got shorten to just Bob.

Story Two: I changed high schools in year 9 and made new friends. I spent a lot of time with two friends in particular and as a result of a science lab fume inhalation event ended up being dubbed The Three Professors (Professor Nim, Professor Scuddles and Professor Mo - our biology teacher commented that we reminded him of Larry, Curly and Shemp to which I replied 'I'd rather be Mo.' The name stuck.) The Loki part came back into it because I came to school one day singing 'Loki-motion'. My friends vaguely knew that my other friends called me Loki but after I came to school singing that and told them about how I had a dream that night were I was baptised by a very fat Italian man (named Humba) with green & purple hair to a parody of 'Locomotion' they started calling me Loki too. It's also what started our religion, but that's a different story.

So, in a way, loco(motion) was involved ;)

That song you linked is addictive. I might be on to a new band here.
