Edit- It actually is interesting to me. Trumps point is nonsense. You cant have a guard everywhere and even if we did not every guard is guaranteed to be the victor. Still every shull in South Africa has at least one Jewish volunteer whose job it is to 'man the gates' so to speak. They are supposed to look out for cars that drive past multiple times. Supposed to question people who are not regulars as to why they are coming to shul. A shull generally wont turn anyone away but often the minor pushback of asking someone who doesn't belong why they are their turns them around. Otherwise they have radios to call for back up in case something actually happens. In south Africa it never has (Though I believe one volunteer did report a supisicous car once and it was found to have a pipe bomb, belonged to pagad). There is an entire organization of volunteers for this purpose. I know there is a similar one in the UK. I think most countries have them. They also man Jewish schools and the Jewish community centre.

Ironically The US government takes the threats to shulls very seriously. Homeland security I think will do a threat assessment for any shull that asks and provide advice on exit strategies, safety protocols etc. The US government also I believes provides security to most shulls on the big holidays where attendance can increase over five fold and so they are bigger targets. For these reasons I think America is one of the few countries were their is not a volunteer organization. If the man was a serious, and I think his actions show he was, closed doors and a jewish volunteer outside probably would not have stopped him. Maybe it would have helped, maybe it would have done nothing I cant say. However I do know that jes are generally very aware of these dangers.

It strikes me as odd how keen he is to use executive orders. He reversed a lot of obamos executive orders. If a democrat replaces him everything he has done will face the same fate. Also America seems to like to alternate democrats and republicans so this could be the way things are done going forward.

For me the whole Trump problem is summed up in that the president of the US has became so divisive that some of the jews of the shull didn't want him to visit. The mayor of Pittsburgh asked him not to come. This is not normal. Even if you don't like the president you should want him to come and honor your fallen. The fact that many don't speaks volumes.
