Idiocracy, I've said it before, increasingly looks like a documentary sent back in time to warn us.

Well, one thing Trump has now: No Excuses.

I feel most sorry for decent Americans (who, logically, must be a minority since they must have all voted, but still lost?) and the whole of Ukraine.

Putler, Pooh Bear and Kim must be happier than a pig in shit. There goes the neighbourhood.

Still only the elector votes count and they can ignore the popular vote which is entirely meaningless. US elections are such a weird thing.

Meanwhile, in liberal California:

Quote

California Proposition 6. Prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude.

This proposed amendment to California's constitution would bar slavery in any form and repeal a current provision allowing involuntary servitude as a punishment for crime.

No 54.9% 4,804,353

Probably going to be a lot of finger pointing on not picking Shapiro and going with Walz.

You're probably right. And much as I dislike Shapiro, we should have gone with him. This election was too important.

I'd guess those creepy threatening pro-Dem ads we were inundated with didn't end up helping. There's some research indicating that those sorts of reminders have a net benefit, despite alienating people, but I suspect they failed to fully account for the possibility of social backlash (for example, social media intensifying the backlash), reframing by the other side, and cultural variation (or perhaps not, and they actually did help a little). And Musk was literally giving everyone who signed his petitions and registered to vote $100, on top of entering them into that sweepstakes to win a million dollars---apparently the million dollar prize each day wasn't awarded at random but to people they thought would have the most impact. Guessing they did that partly to make inroads among young Latinos and Black people, etc. Then of course some mean "Demonrat" judge ruled Musk had to stop the million dollar giveaway.

Oh well. Here's hoping that Musk's reactionary veering has just been a feint in the long game. But that seems almost as unlikely as Harris winning Alaska (which is what she'd need to do now to win... that and all the other remaining states).

This is likely the the of the SSA.

I'm extremely furious at the big chunk of the country that voted to put that dumbass back in power.

If it's any consolation, there's still a decent chance that Trump will die soon. Or not far into his presidency. And while Vance seems to be an evil sociopath, he's also intelligent and at least capable of rational thought, though I'm not sure how much his brain has been actually twisted by reactionary ideology (religious or otherwise...).

What a sad way to wake up. I think this proves that the US isn’t ready to accept a female president. Also IMO she should have distanced herself from Biden. I’m not proud to be an American anymore.

So they sorted that voter fraud issue, huh?

Agree with Bliss. Trump winning the popular vote is a referendum on a female president. Gender and race may not have been the overarching theme but it played a big part.

I told my wife when they announced Harris we were going to lose.

As much as we might not want to admit it, misogyny and racism are too engrained in much of America to vote for her.

Fuck

Part of me feels like this is a bad dream and just wants to go back to sleep and wake up in a different reality.

Deep breaths. Focus.

And more coffee...

Musk, Ackman, and Andreessen's influence might dissuade Trump from following through on his dumbest ideas.

We can still largely avoid future catastrophic climate change if effective accelerationism turns out to actually be effective in time. The only way forward now is to accelerate. It's like we just cut the cord of our parachute and now we need to move fast enough to incinerate the ground and remold it anew.

As for Ukraine... I'm sorry we failed. Perhaps there's hope for most of Eastern Europe still. Or am I being too pessimistic? Guess that's really a question for the other thread...

Well let's all hope trump at end of life and only one presidential term and all branches he gets a ton of positive change. If you never picked up this I'm actually a optimist in real life.

We have super hard road ahead as Americans and crazy changes need to be made. A few years away from interest payments being more than we bring in taxes. Yes that's still hovers above us and sadly the only way to fix this..is rough either it occurs naturally by the math , or someone meets it head on.

I wish him the best.

(Though 2028 Republicans will be close in NY state ! And democrats will probably take Texas...I think there's so interesting way to look at the numbers coming out..)

To my fellow posters don't get too sad, he is not that guy he gets associated with and their is too many Republicans who do indeed care about America progressing to allow regression. If he bumbles it up he will be a lame duck president in two years and they don't want to be thrown out. Let's hope for a solid presidency and he imbues the positive traits the Republican party can manifest.

At the close-up level it's probably a combination of all the things people are saying. More broadly, given the margins here (and worldwide trends) I think incumbents are being punished (and immigrants scapegoated) across the board for post-COVID economies and perceptions thereof. In terms of who's actually to 'blame' here, I think there's plenty to go around. Though I doubt it'd be helpful to point fingers anywhere but inward, for the Dem political class. For now I'm just hoping the Senate staunches some of the bleeding and the remaining few razor margin races fall our way somehow.

I mean, ultimately I doubt politics-as-usual is going to matter so much during what's coming, but I'm pretending for now that post-mortems matter. Just in case, I guess.
