Re: Rammstein - I have never been a HUGE fan, but I saw them at Sonisphere a couple of years ago. Live, they are mind blowing (never mind that during the song "Pussy" he was riding a massive inflatable penis along the front of the stage that shot foam into the crowd...) So yeah, pretty good concert!

Epica, I am very up and down with them. Half the time I like them and the other half I get bored ever so quickly. Never sure which one it will be. I like Nightwish!! :killingme:

Two bands that have been pointed out to me recently are Falloch, a Scottish band, who I am digging massively, loving the atmosphere to their sound!

Secondly, progressive metal band Optic. They only have a two song EP at the moment, but by heck it's blooming marvellous! I highly recommend downloading it, it's free from their website! http://opticband.bandcamp.com/

One final point for now, an album I have had on non-stop for the past few weeks is the amazing "Streams Inwards" by Chilean atmospheric doom metal band Mar de Grises. Superb stuff, definitely worth checking out!

A picture that laments what is considered "metal" by some these days...

I saw that Metal Evolution series also and enjoyed it very much. Talk about flashbacks and nostalgia, though! I guess I'd be considered an "old metalhead" considering most of my favorites came out of the 80s. After the grunge era of the 90s, "life" took over (got married, moved, started a family) and I had less and less time to search for good music. Metal has never seemed like a genre where you could easily find the good stuff on your radio any day of the week. I guess these days with Sirius/XM etc, it's a lot more possible though. I have to say, after reading through this thread, I'm probably way out of touch as I don't know a lot of the more current bands that are mentioned. My loss, I'm sure. But my favorites, that I still listen to to this day:

Iron Maiden - One of the very few bands that didn't seem to change style/direction that turned me off. Steve Harris! Also top 5 for best concert I've ever been to. Seventh Son Tour '88

Queensryche - Through the Empire album, at least. A very underrated band imo. If I could only have 1 metal album from the 80s, I believe Operation: Mindcrime would be it. The music and subject matter both are brilliant. The issues of the USA that it talks about are still (sadly) totally relevant today, maybe even more so.

Savatage - Also an underrated band imo. Criss Oliva was a very good guitar player before his demise. I saw them with Megadeth and Dio, New Years Eve '87, Nassau Coliseum. Awesome.

Dream Theater - Not sure which sub-genre of metal they fall into, but they're under the umbrella, certainly!

Metallica - Up until the infamous "Black" album. I was a newbie bass player at the time. When I could learn Enter Sandman in 1 day, well that told me something had changed!

Helloween - A fine metal band from Germany.

Warlock/Doro Pesch - I admit it; the album cover art for Triumph and Agony drew me in to give it a listen but from there it was just as much about the music as the hot, blonde singer with the powerful voice. Pretty strong German accent not withstanding, Doro could belt it out.

Probably leaving many out, but those are definately some of my favorites.

Silly man, that. I've read his blog, just to confirm that he is properly insane.

In other news, how about that Electric Wizard and Dopethrone, everyone? I know I'm a bit late to the party, but fuck me that's a magnificent album! Legalise drugs and murder!

Yob is my favorite doom metal band. Was listening to The Great Cessation quite a bit when I was reading FoD.

91 posts and nobody has mentioned the greatest metal album of all time?!

Spoiler

I do have fond memories of Saxon. I saw them in Germany in 83 or 84.

That's funny that you mention that! I'm also a HUGE Jethro Tull fan and recall being quite amused at the backlash the ridiculous music establishment received afterward (and deservedly so; Tull shouldn't have been in that category). Metallica got screwed, although I never thought And Justice For All was one of their best. And I personally think Crest of a Knave is a very good album.

Fathomed this thread needed a good bit of necromancing, as though it were a golem malenchanted by a necropshere. Or something.

So. Lots of (mainstream) metal out over the next few months. We've just had the new Lamb of God record drop, which is mostly decent, if not earth-shattering. The only real downer on that album is 'Overlord' - power ballads just don't seem to be LoG's thing.

Next month we have new Soilwork. Again, not expecting anything earth-shatteringly different from them, but after the last disc (The Living Infinite), the stakes are definitely up for them to deliver.

Come September, there are four discs out around the same time I'm looking to. First off: The Black Dahlia Murder with Abysmal. I imagine the record will be anything but, if the teaser tracks are any indication. Very consistent and rarely disappointing. There's also TesseracT with Polaris; they went full-on post-metal clean singing ambidjent with Altered State. I do wonder how much will change with the return of Dan Tompkins.

The other two would be Crossfaith's Xeno and Metaprism's The Human Encryption. Crossfaith are somewhat predictable metallish synth-core, but fun for when you want something a bit thoughtless for #nowurmoshing. Metaprism are local(ish) to my hometown and their EP greatly impressed me. Sort of if Lacuna Coil had the musical stylings of The Agonist.

The new Nile might be interesting again. Wasn't too impressed with their latest offerings, but 'What should not be unearthed' might kick some proper butt again.

'Call to destruction' might prove popular in ISIS lands Posted Image

Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

I still can't believe ISIS have a band operating in America.

Their album Panopticon is amazing so I can forgive the whole "death to infidels" thing... :(

Wavering Radiant on the other hand I find rather middling, so perhaps that's how they've managed to stay under the radar.
