I stopped paying attention to Hammer a long ass time ago.

Oh I've not bought a magazine for years but I follow their Facebook page because every now and then they do top 10 lists of bands you might not have heard of etc. But it's mostly Slipknot, Ghost and Babymetal...

I feel like focusing on Babymetal is a disservice to Japanese metal. Not because they aren't great (they are) but in terms of idolcore bands you also have Ladybaby, Deadlift Lolita, and PassCode who are worth a shout. And then for metal you have bands like Blood Stain Child (if you like your melodic death metal laced with trance) or Crystal Lake for MAXIMUM UNGA.

Makes me feel so oooold. I don't even know most of these bands. On the other hand it's a good list to pick up new stuff.

I think I left my metal days behind in my youth.


I'm in the same boat. I think most of the newer stuff I like nowadays falls under hard rock or stoner rock.

Yeah. Most of the band's I like/liked fall under Hard Rock, not so much as Metal I guess.

Agreed. Babymetal took a concept and made it big but I've seen some immense stuff from Japan.

I own a whole two of them!

My tastes run too far towards power metal to ever make a dent in lists like that. Interesting reading though.

Talking of Japan, I've been listening to the new Band-Maid album, Conqueror. It was very confusing at first. One minute it's like they're channelling Taylor Swift, the next they're rocking out on some of the heaviest songs they've done yet. But it's really starting to grow on me. It's (obviously) a lot more diverse than the out and out hard rock of the previous albums, particularly World Domination, but I'm starting to think it benefits a lot from that diversity. Very brave of them to open the album with a pure pop song, PAGE, especially. Usually the albums that grow on me are the ones I stick with the longest, so time will tell. Whoever gave Kanami, Akane and MISA their respective instruments deserve medals.

Also looking forward to the new Lovebites album next month.

Yeah. Band-Maid are one of those groups whose performers are very, very good at their individual instruments. The fact that they look like they'd call you Goshujin-sama is just a bonus.

So on this list I own:

#66 - which is really good
#63 - which changed my perception on progressive metal
#62 - which is average
#60 - which made me realise how you can interweave melody with dissonant riffs
#56 - which is Sabaton's best, easily
#41 - which is sugoi desu
#39 - which is easily TBDM's best album yet
#38 - which is ok, but not great
#26 - which I saw live in its entirety and it was amazing
#25 - which is average at best
#21 - which is very unga but great for the gym
#17 - which is where we see the downfall of Sevenfold in that after the Rev died they just went to shit
#10 - why is this here? It's Devin's weakest Project album by far. Pick Sky Blue instead, asshats
#3 - which is Gojira's most recent album (some huckster put something out with their name on it in 2016 but it was pure shit and non-existent in the Gojira canon)

As a metal fan it's quite a weak, populist list overall.

I have a feeling you folks might not have had the proper exposure to this area, I'd like to present and propose a snippet of something completely different!

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly.
