I have been striving, for years now, to find a good author, A good canadian fantasy writer. And today, I find myself with two. Ian C. Esslemont and Steven Erikson.

I had almost lost all hope of finding an actual good writer who is able to bring the characters alive and make the world seem real.

Up until now, George R.R. Martin was my favorite author, and I have to say, that Ian and Steven are now on par with him.

SE and ICE to a lesser extent have produced brillant works, their goal as authors is so refreshing too.

@Yves: I don't have a sense of humour, it's as dry as a desert which is experiencing long term drought issues

I racked my brains for questions I've always wanted to ask SE and came up with:

a) A long time ago you had indicated that each book in the series has a central theme that need not be very obvious (e.g. Motherhood for Memories of Ice). Can you give us a list of themes for the eight books so far? And maybe for the two that remain?

Your world is a HUGE place and the dramatis personae befits it. But if you had to pick a few characters, who is the Malazan Book of the Fallen a story of? the Paran siblings, Shadowthrone and Cotillion, the Crippled God, or none of the above?

c) Had Karsa and Icarium fought - in your mind who would've won?

d) If you wrote in the Malazan universe again, would you be more partial to a prequel or sequel book/ series?

e) You had said in an earlier interview that there is one major character resurrection still to come in the series. Is this resurrection done as of TtH, or will it come in the two remaining volumes?

He's not that famous here? Well, maybe. I stumbled across him via a Salon review and felt the possibilities warranted a look-see.

I have a couple of questions for him.

As a man working on his own story, i would like to know how SE planned out his writing. Like what bits did he commit to paper? Did he draw up the cities, cultures, pantenon? Writing a story is a hugh project and i'd like to know how he started.

I met Steven in London last weekend, where he signed my very battered copy of GoTM-TtH was too heavy for me to take all that way, given I was having to travel light.

He also kind of answered this question as we were chatting. I asked what was next, and he said he'd signed up for six (!) more books, but they would not be set after the final one in the series. I took this to imply that they would all be in the MBOTF world, and they would be prequels and/or set during the main storyline.

I don't go to many book signings, but I'm pleased I went to meet Steven. He took some time to speak with everyone and seemed like a genuinely nice chap. Unfortunately, I bottled quizzing him any more about the millions of questions I have...
