I doubt we'd be as 'left' if the test took european standards as base.

So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

Basically there are completely different standards, regionally, for where the 'center' lies. That's not really the issue. The test gives more of an absolute coordinate, rather than a relative coordinate.

Few people hit that high on authoritarian (because the only people who think that high level of absolutism are the ones with the power), but most of us average schmucks, being average schmucks, are more egalitarian, socially liberal, and perhaps economically left-leaning because those things benefit us.

Philosophical bent sometimes comes into play, but I can only really give my own opinion there (because that's the only one I can speak for).

The test gives a flawed absolute co-ordinate, because it takes little account of the intricacies inherent in many of the questions it poses, and no doubt leaves out many questions in the hopes of giving, as you say, an 'absolute' co-ordinate over a relative one. I certainly think I'd be further right on the economic scale if you compared me to most people here, and definitely to many in my own country, and yet the questions were phrased in such a way as to make that position impractical for me to achieve without being somewhat dishonest.

Perhaps it points to an inherent bias in the questions that leads most people to a left-liberal response (something I feel could be entirely true), rather than a certain regional slant on them.

Of course it's flawed. The questions suck, but it's not unpredictable.

For many that do, the reasoning is that state intervention and social freedom don't have to be mutually exclusive, that the classic idea of a public/private split to protect freedom is flawed, antiquated, and too simplistic. The idea is that in these days of multinational companies, government regulated big business protects social freedom better than big business that is able to do what it likes. Do multinationals have a strong interest and accountability to the welfare of the general public, or are they mainly concerned with shareholders, executives, and turning huge profits for their own advantage, and quite happy to intrude on social freedoms to do so? Okay, point conceded. Capitalism was designed by committee, horse/camel, Frankenstein's monster, etc.
Adam Smith's ideal economic model included state regulation and income taxation for wealth redistribution, for the betterment of society as a whole, as key facets. He recognized that tools should serve their makers and not the other way around. He was also a better man than the robber barons who warped his vision. None of which is to say he'd be on the economic left as opposed to the right, just that the "right" shouldn't be homogenized as laissez faire enthusiasts, even and especially by those on the right who fancy themselves its representatives.

I was going to give you my consolation if you had. It's dreadful.

But Smith was writing essentially to please the British establishment - namely that the only things that the government should impose on industrialism were taxations and regulations necessary to execute the duties of the state namely maintain armed forces, and execute the law.
