Nicely done article/list actually. The list is based strictly on the dollar digits, so all you 13th WARRIOR fans are s-o-l...

I knew some of these (notably CUTTHROAT ISLAND and GIGLI), but i didn't know that about INCHON or FINAL FANTASY... and the bit about SAHARA was a surprise.

My first thought when I saw the title was Kurt Russell's Soldier. I'm glad it's on the list. My choice for it had nothing to do with the amount of money it lost tho, purely how rubbish the film was...

It wasn't actually a commercial flop. Alarm bells rang before it's international release because it didn't perform well in the US, but it actually turned a tidy profit after it was released in cinemas worldwide.

I really enjoyed The 13th Warrior (#5 on the list). An underrated film. I didn't see it until I came across it on HBO or Starz. I was pleasantly surprised.

Waterworld was a flop at the time because it didnt make the money they thought it would.

Funny...most of the list I agree with....ESPECIALLY number 1 CUTTHROAT ISLAND...which made a pirate movie and removed EVERYTHING that makes pirate movies good. LOL. That flick was atrocious!

But

RED PLANET is actually quite decent.

I also used to like FINAL FANTASY: The Spirits Within....BUT...it has since been kind of overshadowed by ADVENT CHILDREN which is the more Final-fantasy-style of the two...but it was still decent. It's problem was simply that it abandoned the fantasy part for full sci-fi...when FF has always been a mix of Fantasy and sci-fi.

THE POSTMAN made WATERWORLD look like DANCES WITH WOLVES.

Worse part is that the book it was based on was actually really good.

Funny thing... when i originally saw the ads for SPEEDRACER, i thought 'massive flop'. When it was inflicted on me on a flight, i thought 'painfullly massive flop'.

And HEAVEN'S GATE really is that boring.

I'm quite surprised by a few of those entries. Red Planet wasn't that bad and The 13th Warrior is imo, one of the greatest adventure films ever made. $160 million !?! WTF did they spend that on ? Banderas was the only big star in it and set wise they made a few ships and an enormous wooden palisade/ dining hall thingy. There was no CGI (one of the reasons I love it) and the pitched battles were not that big. OK the link says that Crichton had to reshoot a shed load of scenes but still...., $160 million ? I'd like to see the McTiernan's original scenes and what was cut.

Heaven's Gate is a beautiful looking film, it's just too long and a little bit poo in terms of action (which every western needs at some point)

I also think it should have retained the book title (and the original film title...which actually DID appear in a teaser trailer for the film prior to the change) EATERS OF THE DEAD.

Which I am sad I can't find video of...cause Disney pulled it. I remember it being a significantly freaky awesome teaser! But that was before they took the flick away from John McTiernan.

I'm having trouble figuring that out too. I always thought it had a fairly small budget, which I lamented because it could have been so much more awesome with a big budget. Which it turns out it had.

The Spirits Within is the only other movie I've seen from that list. It was alright, nothing special though and not final fantasy except in name and CGI.

And there was a Speedracer movie? Dear. God. NO!

I found out a while back that a large proportion of the budget for Spirits Within went on animating the main character's hair, each follicle individually, and that the rest of the cast has buzzcuts or shorter as it was so expensive and took so long. Then Monsters Inc's Sully had more hair for much cheaper. It made me laugh, what can I say.

Also I'm disappointed that Delgo wasn't on there, and the biggest movie flop was that guy who had to act impotent in a sex scene with Olivia Wilde.

I'm pretty sure this is because when it was still called EATERS OF THE DEAD and Die Hard director John McTiernan was shooting it he was going overboard with costs trying to make it be more of an action flick than it ended up being. Apparently a huge chunk of his stuff also ended up on the cutting room floor when Michael Crichton (the books author) took over direction they had to do a number of reshoots to make the film work in a new way with more mystery about the tribe of eaters. The numbers still don't REALLY add up cause they shot in British Columbia FFS...LOL.. but as far as I know McTiernan is a money-spender when it comes to action sequences. He is very specific and does things in a way that makes them cost 3 times as much as they should...which is kind of why DIE HARD is so awesome...so it's hard to fault him for that.

Soldier is actually a pretty good movie. It hits the right spots and the combat scenes are still pretty good today.

Sahara is an oddly enjoyable movie. Steve Zahn is never in a truly bad movie. Most of his movies are excellent actually. I don't know if what Geena Davis or her husband have can still be called careers - never saw the appeal in her acting either.

Ive seen every film on that list apart from Inchor and some of them arent bad at all. Again it seems alot of the budget was wasted with some sort of egotistical director/editor reshooting all the scenes like 13th warrior. 160 million....

That CNBC site is just appalling itself, without even looking at the content. Terrible design, layout and kept dropping out - even though every other browser window (Firefox) I had open at the time was just dandy. 505 errors - whatever the fuck that means.

And The 13th Warrior was an awesome film. Best death scene EVAR!
