Well it was always metafiction, from the first book. Everything about it screams "I am the author, Stephen King, and these are all my genre influences from childhood and beyond stuffed in a blender." That said, I wonder how much better that decision woulda been taken by the audience if he had just called that character "Richard Bachman".

Oh wow, the early reviews are ... not good. Not good at all.
"Fortune favors the bold, though statistics favor the cautious." - Indomitable Courteous (Icy) Fist, The Palace Job - Patrick Weekes
"Well well well ... if it ain't The Invisible C**t." - Billy Butcher, The Boys
"I have strong views about not tempting providence and, as a wise man once said, the difference between luck and a wheelbarrow is, luck doesn’t work if you push it." - Colonel Orhan, Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City - KJ Parker

I feel bad for those amongst my friends who are such die hard fans and waited so long...for what appears to be a REALLY watered down, generic beginning to the story they love.
But to be honest, you could see the writing on the wall with this one...and not just it's journey through development hell...but in the fact that they've seemingly ditched the main thrusts of the really complex story in favour of Gunslinger Batman Matrix Portal Fantasy.
It also sucks because Elba was an inspired choice to play Roland...

Very much so.
This is totally a property that needed to be handed to a single, genuinely talented showrunner/director with a free hand to work their magic, and instead we're getting the opposite of that.
Expect the aftermath of the movie to be 'we're very committed to the tv show/sequel/series/universe/franchise and expect to move forward as soon as possible after we take a careful look at bullshit bullshit bullshit' followed by dead silence for a decade or so.
Btw that variety article isn't all that well researched either beyond the Hollywood alarmist clickbait...
"A classic tale of good and evil, “The Dark Tower” stars Idris Elba as the last Gunslinger, who is locked in an eternal battle with a sorcerer known as the Man in Black, portrayed by Matthew McConaughey."
...uhm, no.

This is EXACTLY what will transpire. And it's just so brutal that this will now be relegated to development hell again for a decade before someone will pick it up.
Am I wrong in thinking that this would have been an IDEAL show for HBO to have tackled as their post-GoT Sunday night slot?
A season a book.
It could have been glorious!
Also, it would have to be a straight adaptation and not a "sequel/redo" of the original tale.

I was mildly encouraged when the Horn thing suggested they were taking the material seriously but giving themselves room to flex.
Then everything else came out. Realistically i won't have a chance to see this until the hype/condemnation is well underway, so i can't really say i would/not have seen it anyways, but i fully expect that by the time i can see this in the theater, i will have decided to wait for the TMN/Netflix release, and then out of mere morbid trainwreck curiosity.
HBO... it would have made sense, but between GoT on the fantasy side and WESTWORLD doing the sf/western thing, i suspect they would pass just now. Five years from now when both those shows are gone, maybe... hey that should be right around when someone's ready to make another attempt!

Isn't it being made into a series though?
Not if the movie flops as hard as it's about to.

King's work has become an abundance of crap, but otoh you have The Shining, Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me, and The Running Man.
...shut up, Running Man was brilliant and I'll fight you if you say different.

Some might argue it is the best Schwarzenegger film. They would be wrong though. We all know that is Commando.

Apt, like the broken clock, is correct in this instance. Nothing is better than Commando, the undisputed emperor of cheesy one liners.

I've stayed away from this thread for a few weeks. I'm a huge fan of the books and i dont want to know shit about it before hand. Reviews, thoughts, none of it.
But this popped up today and thought id drop it by.

Apparently the tv series is moving forward no matter the success/failure of the movie.

Really shouldnt be surprised, but i was incredibly disappointed in this movie. First of all, just as a moviegoer and not a fan of the books, its a pretty bad movie.
I really tried to leave my prejudices at home and keep an open mind on this one. I understand this is a different path to the tower, so things will be different, but the amount they changed the central characters and their motivations leaves me thoroughly unimpressed and uninterested in any future projects. Its like they took their ideas for the Man in Black not from the books, but from a cross of fucking Bond villains and overly evil 80's movies bad guys.
Also, they just made it a revenge movie, thats it. Which completely contradicts the books.
Elba was fine as Roland, but along with the differences from the books and how they took no time at all to flesh out his character, he didnt really stand a chance.
And aside from some cheesy shit at the end, the combat was pretty good. One of the semi bright spots. The other being Katheryn Winnick
Thoroughly unimpressed and disappointed.
