Did that happen during the NWA / Chronic era of Dr. Dre? Also, as both Dre and Ice Cube have a producer credit for the film, I'm guessing they would leave that history out.

The film does portray both Ice Cube and Dr. Dre as "grinders" who are trying to do better for their families, which I'm guessing is what is called "creative liberty" with the facts in film making parlance.

At the end of the day, leaving out any domestic abuse drama, etc. the film was really a lot of fun. I recommend it.

Just watched Siege of Jadotsville.

Was totally unaware of the story it's based on so was nice to be made aware of this history there.

Not a bad film, although Dornans accent was all over the place which really baffled me, he's usually pretty good at spring southern accentd. Strongs accent being poor was less noticeable to me (and more understandable given he's English).

Have no real idea how accurate it was but as a 'light' war film it's pretty solid

Just watched The Arrival. It's a beautiful film. I can see why people like it. I'm not sure how I feel about the last third/the ending though.

It feels sort of like a deus ex machina ending but also sort of justified by the hints they left like bread crumbs though out the film. Much like Interstellar I guess, but less cartoonish.

It felt heartbreaking to realise that the pain that prefaced the story was actually pain that was to come. And that she would embrace that pain, the loss of her husband, for the years she would get to spend with her daughter.

But it also made me realize that Jeremy Renner's character, is actually only in the film to serve as the a future love interest, while as a character he doesn't really do anything for the plot. He's just there.

In comparison to a film like Sphere, I think I liked Sphere more than The Arrival. Sphere goes completely up it's own ass and almost becomes a mind games slasher film towards the end, but the hard science approach that film had to first contact was much more interesting. Mainly because you have various experts in their field bouncing ideas off one another. I feel like that is missing in Arrival. I think you could argue that the film tells in stead of shows the academic work that goes into understanding the Aliens which I think is a shame, because I think it does "first contact" right, I just wanted more philosophy.

Still, it's a great film.

Ron would cope! It's mainly from his twitter feed that I'm getting the info. He says if it's not GDToro he's not doing it.

So ok another Hellboy might be made but it just wouldn't be the same.

Last week I watched all the Star Trek (original cast) movies as well as the Spockumentary from Adam Nimoy. To be honest, I liked all the movies, even the flawed ones. I'd rank em 4>6>2&3>1>5. As far as the documentary goes, it was pretty solid. A little bit of talking head stuff (friends, family, fans), a decent chunk of Nimoy biography, a lot of focus on Spock the character. What's there is good, I just wish there was more of everything (particularly reminiscences from people who knew or admired him). It was a Kickstarter movie though, so for the budget it had it's well made, a solid B.

Sausage fest had a couple chuckles. Not what i would classify as "good". 2 gratuitous food sex scenes out of 5.



Hell or High Water was alright though. Nothing groundbreaking, but the performances were very solid. 3.5 "is that really Ben Foster?" out of 5.

Finally got to see HACKSAW RIDGE, and really enjoyed it. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Mel Gibson does not direct bad movies.

It’s a very affecting story, especially as a true one, and is executed with aplomb across the narrative. The actors are all very good at their roles…my wife said that it was hard to take Vince Vaughn seriously as a sergeant though. She said she kept excepting him to be joking. Typecast is an understatement. Having seen RETURN TO PARADISE though, in which he was largely being dramatic (and very good at that) I bought it mostly fine. Garfield was fantastic, and deserved the nomination he got.

Next up MOONLIGHT.

I saw Fences today at baby cinema. It's really really good. You can tell it was originally a play which occasionally felt a bit annoying to me but good old Denzel and Viola keep you with them. Proper acting.

Watched Moana and Moonlight.

Moana is great. Maybe one or two cliche plot contrivances along the way, but overall great story, character design, and animation (which is full of neat details). Music is strong, especially the song Jemaine Clement sings (surprised he didn't write it since its vibe is very Flight of the Conchords-in-Bowie-mode).

Moonlight - what can I say? This movie is near perfect. It's honest, romantic, hits a number of emotions dead on, and is almost unbearably tender at points.
