AMC has just run THE QUICK & THE DEAD (still great!) and are chasing it with TOMBSTONE.

It's definitely a Spaghetti Western kinda day.

"THE LIVES OF OTHERS" [DAS LEBEN DES ANDEREN] - a beautiful german movie about the final years of the DDR, and a StaSi operative who gets in touch with his touchy-feely side. At the end I cried a little bit. Definite recommendation.

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

Apparently Universal wants to have a mega-franchise like Marvel, so DRACULA UNTOLD has been turned into the prequel vehicle for that set of films. We will see the Mummy, Wolfman, Creature from the Blackk Lagoon ect. all have their own movies over the next few years, and then they will start to mingle them together in bigger tentpole movies that star two or more of them. Sounds like a coool plan if they can pull it off.

I'm one of the very few who thought it was meh. I thought it was just a bit fake and sickly. I think growing up on my parent's stories of communist Poland made a difference, though I assume Gothos either lived or has heard similar stories so eh.

Mind you, it doesn't seem to have been particularly popular in Germany, I've met a lot of people here who haven't even heard of it.

The Universal Monster thing is a weird but intriguing idea for sure. Dracula Untold, on the other hand, looks like balls caught in a zipper. And that title...sounds like an E! True Hollywood Story knockoff.

I am going to get really, really drunk and go see Dracula Untold.

Hopefully, they've hit the camp button enough times to make it funny/interesting. The Van Helsing movie from a while back was sorta close (but not actually there) to striking that right camp tone/balance.

I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Long plane journeys are a great opportunity to watch movies that hey hey hey you would never normally pay for. As such I have now seen Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (I did want to see this at the cinema but missed it), Divergent (I have a soft spot for teen movies) and Edge of Tomorrow. First and last are eminently watchable although Apes was a bit twee in the way they tried to get us to look at the apes as living an idyllic lifestyle and Edge got wrapped up too nearly. Divergent was craparoo, despite my low expectations. It wasn't Twilight levels of bad but I genuinely worry about the shit they feed teenage girls these days.

And last night I watched Priest. Who has seen it? I have no idea about the source material. It was almost brilliant but missed it by some distance.

Finally saw Edge of Tomorrow. It was a very pleasant surprise, but the ending (the last couple of minutes really) felt a bit off. I hope that doesn't put anyone who hasn't yet seen it off it though.

I watched Divergent too! The books were nothing to write home about, but the movie failed even to live up to the book. I mean at least one thing the book had going for it was that it didn't neuter the violence or its consequences.

Starship Troopers meets Armor meets Groundhog Day. This summer had such a great selection of action/sci fi.

I liked the film mostly because ~~German Kevin Spacey~~ Ulrich Mühe was brilliant in his role, and the rest of the cast weren't far behind. The story, while maybe not the ultimate achievement in screenwriting, was good enough and believable to a large extent at least.

In other news, re-watched Oldboy with the gf. She liked it, and I must say I've forgotten most of the film since the last time I saw it. Brilliant piece, that.
