I dunno about WAY better...Roger Moore will always have a special place in my heart for being in The Spy Who Loved Me. Such a good film. As it stands though my list goes Connery > Craig > Moore > Brosnan > Lazenby > Dalton. Brosnan would be higher if his films weren't so shit (besides Goldeneye of course).

Brosnan is a solid Bond that I prefer above Roger Moore but as you say its because his films got progressively worse and then Die Another Day was all sorts of terrible even with a scantily clad Rosamund Pike.

I will never forgive Roger Moore because in Octopussy he has 4 minutes to stop a nuclear bomb and, needing a disguise, he stops and get a full clown costume including full face paint.

Roger Moore fluctuates I think. His Bond solidified a lot of the things that make Bond who he is, but then you get performances like Octopussy and A View to a Kill, which are just plain awful.

Just watched Iron Sky. It is most likely the best movie made in 2012.

Really?
I was horribly dissappointed in the ending.... as sf it was bad comedy and as a comedy it was bad sf, and the whole thing devolved into not even thinly veilied anti-american nonsense.

I agree that empirically Connery was better as Bond, but Moore is so clearly having more fun and his flics are so over the top that I will always have a soft spot in my filmheart for them.

It's also one of those things where the first actor you see as Bond tends to be the one you most identify as the character. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME and MOONRAKER were two of the first movies i ever saw.

He's 007. He had an emergency clown costume in his wallet.

A VIEW TO A KILL had its problems but the Sony Walkman/Garrot and Grace Jones make up for most of them.

I echo your comment about the ending. I didn't think it was that bad a comedy though, yet nowhere close to being the best movie of 2012.

Goldeneye was the first movie I ever saw, because I wanted to watch the film before playing the game. That is probably why I rate Goldeneye so highly amongst the Bond oeuvre. That said, Brosnan's legacy is tarnished by the quality of his films, because they made the sin of going too over the top with the gadgets and the stunts (and casting Teri Hatcher as a Bond girl). It's a shame too because they had some real potential (Bond being in a North Korean prison for instance).

Anyway, Moore's films are much better in that regard, but as a character I don't think Moore ever exuded the confidence and sheer elegance to the extent that Connery did, which is a shame as well, because in my opinion his films would have been the best of them all if Moore had played a more convincing Bond. I feel sorry for those Bond girls by the way, because Moore is a truly terrible kisser. ^_^

I dunno about most of them, but there were some very good bits in the movie I'll admit. The banter between Bond and Tibbett was hilarious. In fact, Moore's banter is probably the most entertaining out of all of them.

I just had a novel idea, hopefully not too controversial, but do you think Idris Elba would be a good choice for the next Bond?

I wasn't too disappointed in the ending. It was a well done campy movie that lambasted quite a few different parts of the US that I don't like.

He would make an outstanding Bond. Hes British, a very good actor in both the Wire and apparently in Luther which is supposed to be excellent. Hes a sexy beast and has the charisma to pull it off.

It will never happen because he is a 6 foot 4 black guy

I was thinking about this the other day actually and it just wont fly. You read comments from before the new Daniel Craig Bond films and people are shitting the bed because you turn a traditionally brunette character blonde and people where threatening to boycott the film.

http://news.bbc.co.u...ent/4738536.stm

If you look at Pierce Brosnan (admirably) stating to the press that Daniel Craig is a good actor and will make a good Bond he states '"These are rocky waters, but I think he will have the last laugh.". Now its not all to do with him being blonde but you see my point.

Elba has had this before with playing Heimdall in Thor (thus a white Norse god) and that was in a fairly minor role.

It really is a shame and I think Elba would be fantastic in the role.

EDIT- Regarding Brosnan and Moore it was Moores style of Bond film, though not the fault of Moore himself ofcourse, that eventually shot Brosnan in the foot. The Bond films get increasingly ridiculous until Die another Day which goes above and beyond any before. That and the Bourne films called for a grittier Bond. I think Daniel Craig does a very good job as Bond

Ugh, worrywort, your semi-trolling is atrocious!

Like we haven't had a whole thread dedicated to that very subject.

@JCVT - yeah, and how much money have the new Bond films made, blondeness aside (though that's now mostly been embraced), and including the shift towards a more modern, Bourne-like style of action? People complain, but at the end of the day if the film is good and the actor is quality, they will come. *shrug*

That what I mean though. The Daniel Craig films are very good and as you say commercially successful. But from the outset changing a brunette character blonde is different from changing his race. The Heimdall/Thor example is a good example as people were criticising the film as a result which is ridiculous. Idris Elba is a great actor and would make a great Bond. I just dont want to see comments about his race during the run up to the promotion of the film.

Reminds me of those fucking retards who were saying they cared less about Rue, from the Hunger Games, because she was played by a black actress. Not only did the actress do a good job but the description of her in the book described her as black aswell.

Really brings out the racist ones, huh? It's sad, but not really something that I think we should let hold us back.

Anyway, as I said earlier, this discussion has been covered elsewhere and I don't really want to bring it up again. XD

Exactly I just wouldnt want it overshadowing the film or tarnishing Elba's career as a result because of such a negative reaction from a small but very vocal part of the audience.

As you say moving on

Went to watch the Oz the Magnificent. As I dont have rose tinted goggles for the original Wizard of Oz I thought I wouldnt enjoy it but I was surprised. Pretty solid kids film stuff with Zach Braff as the monkey being very good.

I also watched Welcome to the Punch which sounds like a terrible British gangster film about fighting and such. I expected pretty standard British gangster fare like Essex Boys, Rise of the Footsoldier etc and while it wasnt brilliant it was a reasonable watch. It was probably saved by the two main characters (James McAvoy as the commited cop and Mark Strong as the anti hero villain) and was predictable in many places. Still not too bad.

Saw OZ THE GREAT ETC. Like JCVT, I didn't think I would like it, but I did. Visuals were absolutely fantastic. The story could have been better but the actors sold it.

Also saw ADMISSION. Not bad though Lily Tomlin's character is written a bit strangely.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Saw Trance this weekend, Danny Boyles latest. It was reasonably good. One of those movies about memories so it was an enjoyably complicated plot. You don't really get invested in any of the characters though unfortunately.

I can't think of anything else to say because the standout memory from the film that was the subject of all conversation on the way home was "What did you think Rosario Dawson was doing in that bathroom, was that scene gratuitous or necessary for the plot and do you think it was really her or did they CGI her face onto someone elses body"?

You want to see it now, right?

Nah, actors crap just like everyone else.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Finally saw ROCK OF AGES. Despite what i thought was a the lack of talent by the two teen leads, an unfortunate return to music by Catherine Zeta Jones and the fact that Russel Brand overdoes it and Alec Baldwin doesn't overdo it enuf, this was great fun. Tom Cruise has never chewed scenery so well and all the 80s rocker stuff was hysterical.

Roger Ebert has passed away from cancer: http://www.suntimes....ith-cancer.html

Two thumbs down. I always enjoyed reading his reviews regardless of whether or not I agreed with them. His passion for movies will be missed.

Yah man. From his review of The Village: "Eventually the secret of Those, etc., is revealed. To call it an anticlimax would be an insult not only to climaxes but to prefixes. It's a crummy secret, about one step up the ladder of narrative originality from It Was All a Dream. It's so witless, in fact, that when we do discover the secret, we want to rewind the film so we don't know the secret anymore. And then keep on rewinding, and rewinding, until we're back at the beginning, and can get up from our seats and walk backwards out of the theater and go down the up escalator and watch the money spring from the cash register into our pockets."
