It was the part of the climax where

the children collectively murder Fister Roboto with the doofiest expressions on their faces

and it pulled me out of the scene a bit, but luckily the rest of the scene immediately following yanked me back in and stapled me to the chair

EDIT: Didn't like the last third/conclusion much but god damn what a film.

Finally saw Fantastic Beasts. Okay. Not great. The beasts themselves were actually all pretty cool. The people? Not so much. Particularly Newt, who's really annoying the whole way through. I could halfway see if they were going for Newt has Aspergers, but mostly it came off as generic "eccentric genius". Maybe it'll get better in sequels. The villains/antagonists were all pretty cool though. And Dan Fogler actually does some acting in this movie, as opposed to the Jack Black impression he's been getting by on the past decade or so, and he's pretty good. A lot of the action (both light and dark moments) was really strong too.

The big sour note, aside from Newt himself, was of course:

Perhaps. It wasn't before we knew he was a dead-behind-the-eyes hack who hasn't been a competent actor for at least a decade.

That's just one thing though. Overall I'd give it like a 2.5 out of 5. Mostly okay, with a few very good elements and a few very bad elements to balance out.

The Girl With All the Gifts -- pretty good. Definitely streamlined version of the book in ways that aren't really improvements per se on the source, but make sense for a modest budget movie version and do add a few good alternate-draft surprises (I just looked up the budget...it was only $5 million, so now I'm actually pretty impressed by what they pulled off).

Had a go at Batman v Superman for the first time. It was rather messy and transitions from one plot point to another seemed to be abrupt or out of place, and left me scratching my head (and this with the movie being 2 1/2 hours long). And the set up for JL was sort of pandering and unnecessary. There was a lot of entertaining aspects though (not sure if I'm a fan of bulked up Batman though). So overall, I wasn't totally displeased, just was expecting a better executed flick.

I give Batman v Superman 3 jars of grandma's peach tea out of 5.

The Time stuff was properly suffused throughout, from the watch, to the time magic, to the clockwork imagery in the dimensional folding, up through the Infinity Stone reveal. Very appreciated, maybe the best thematic tying of the Infinity Stone to the story it features in of all the movies. That said, it was a bit light on character building -- in some ways efficient (Strange, Wong), in others just totally negligent (Christine, Mordo) -- and aside from the visuals it wasn't ever really surprising. Except maybe that finale: the forward-time fight in the backwards-time setting was pretty awesome, and the Dormammu scene was B+ cool.

I think that Mordo is underdeveloped to save him as the foe of the Strange movies going forward. They needed meat for that (including deeper character development), so they're saving it.

Watched Don't Breathe. I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a below serviceable horror movie, but got a nice suspense laden thriller instead.

Watched XXX: Return of Xander Cage yesterday. It's part painfully trite, by the numbers writing, part a pretty okay action film. It doesn't take itself too series, which made the fights in the film pretty fun but on the other hand... I don't know why this film needed to exist.

It felt like they wanted to set up a new XXX franchise but Diesel is getting old. One thing is him driving around and punching people in Fast and Furious, another is him starring in a film based around extreme sports and youth culture. It's a bit too "Hello fellow kids" when you see Diesel skating around.

Finally watched X-Men: Apocalypse. Mixed bag.

Actually liked the broad strokes of the story, but wasn't fond of a lot of the execution. Few of the emotional elements hit (Magneto losing his wife and daughter was soooo poorly done, it was almost fall to your knees and scream at the sky bad). To be honest I thought the direction was uniformly poor, and visually (including character, set, and costume design) it was appalling. I liked the idea of Apocalypse's character, purpose, etc. Liked the idea of Storm entering the X-Men this way. Liked the idea of Weapon X being freed this way. Liked the idea of rekindling Magneto's hatred of homo sapiens this way. The writing and the direction just didn't live up to the story's outline imo. Also the dialogue was bad and the action was bad (lots of accidental wire-fu). That's a lot of negative in a row, and I didn't hate the movie at all -- the first half was generally solid (aside from Magneto's family stuff, again). Apocalypse was mostly solid (aside from visuals). Quicksilver saving the school was neat. It was definitely not as big a disaster as X3, which I'd give an F. This one I'd give a C.

Finally saw John Wick Chapter 2.

Jolly good fun. Although surely the next one will involve killing everyone who has ever even looked at a weapon?

Watched Wonder Woman earlier. Really solid super hero film. Did a better Cap America film, than Marvel did. Given the films premise I wish they'd turned the destruction and horror of war nob up to 11 though. In that sense I think Man of Steel remains my favorite DC super hero film.

So, more of my precious time wasted by watching Suicide Squad. What a dumpster fire. Disjointed, cliched and cringe worthy. That about sums it up.

I give Suicide Squad 1 dossier on Slipknot out of 5 (because the movie failed to provide one, even though all the other "squadies" got one).

I think Suicide Squad had a lot of promise. The plot was just a bad idea to start the team out with and the focus was all wrong. In the end the relationship between Harly and the Joker became more meaningful than the main story to me.

I hope The Joker and Harley show up in the Batman film, if it ever becomes a reality.

Anyway, I watched Simon Pegg's "The Worlds End" earlier. Really liked it. I think that the two halves of the film don't really compliment each other that well but I think they saved it at the end. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had just been all about that night on the town and not what the film turned into but it was a fun twist.

Simon Pegg has turned out to be a surprisingly good and versatile actor during the past decade or so.

Watched this recently. There were a lot of problems with this film that have been discussed here countless times, but the plot let this movie down from the get go. Add to that it the flow was awful and the plot they did use was executed poorly. Anyway, some cool spots, but overall another meh superhero movie.

I need to watch Logan.
