Watched Shutter Island and Sherlock Holmes this weekend.

Shutter Island was good but also disappointing

SPOILERS.

Spoiler

Sherlock Holmes on the utter hand was great, not really as clever as one could have hoped, but still, very entertaining.

I think would what I really liked about the film was the irreverence. They used the various elements you associated with the Sherlock Holmes stories and age, but made it into something much more fun and flashy. Robert Downey Jr. was pretty much the perfect cast for that role and for once I didn't feel like vomiting at the sight of Jude Law. I'm not sure but this may be the first film I remember liking Jude Law in, in a long long time.

I think it was a good and safe decision to shy away from making it an actual mystery, and only showing the elements, it would have slowed the film down too much.

Can't wait for the sequel.

Hey Apt, if you like Sherlock Holmes, and enjoyed the subject matter being redone in an interesting way, have you seen the recent BBC mini-series, SHERLOCK? It did the very ballsy move of setting it in modern day London, with a younger Holmes, and yet somehow they managed to stay true to the feel of Sherlock Holmes. I was really surprised how well it worked. Definitely worth checking out. There were 3 episodes initially, and more are on the way this autumn.

Saw Paul two weekends ago and I loved it. I think if you like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz you'll probably like this one. Great sci fi references and I thought Seth Rogan owned the alien role.

Also went and saw Sucker Punch tonight. All I can really say is WTF did I just watch. I loved the movie, great fantasy action scenes with hot women, but it was a little mind twisty. Definatly recomend it to anyone.

Watched Green Fried Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe. I liked it, for what it was. A drama about the relationship between a woman going through her mid life crisis and an old woman who had a very inspired, emotional life and helps the middle aged woman through a tough period of her life.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall again, third time I have seen it since it was out, it must tick some boxes.

Prince Caspian, yeah going through movies that each of us haven't seen and putting them in a movie box, now we get to watch the third one when it comes out on DVD.

Wild Child definite chick flick

Paranormal Activity 2. OMG, I didn't want to get up in the middle of the night and go the toilet. I think number one was great and number 2 was better. I am not a big fan of horrors really but Ioved these two.

Thirded

I remember reading a review where they claimed that the film you watch, while good, doesnt lead to the conclusion i thought. When I read that I remember expecting a solid twist rather than an overused B movie spin. Solid performances all round but had the potential to go further.

That certainly is a hat.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I've seen one of the episodes of the Sherlock mini-series (the second one I think), and found it very enjoyable. They do a good job of staying true to the essence and stylings of Sherlock in the modern context, but also use it for a few jokes (ie Sherlock doesn't believe Watson's claim of being able to remember something perfectly for him and gets a bit irrational, wo which Watson replies by showing the picture he took of it).

Currently watching Big Trouble in Little China.

80's movies are the best.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Ha, I loved those movies. My friend even made an "Escape From Cleveland" poster and put it in his movie as an oddball easter egg.

I made an Escape from Cleveland poster for my film & tv class! They really need to make it - only Snake's getting on in years now. But still, I would be willing to overlook the age-continuity issue if it meant getting to see what exactly did go down in Cleveland :)

I only got that out the other day as well ($1 weekly yeah). Still haven't got around to watching it yet.

Another good one from a few years later that I got out is TREMORS. So silly, but good fun.

Now that's just a weird coincidence. Did you also put in a pre-op (I forgot the name of the guy that turned into a chick)? I wanted that poster, but it got lost...wtf. I heard that they were going to remake or make a new Escape, but....don't know. I would see it though.

I heard something about that too. Not sure how they could pull it off...I can't think of an adequate cast myself. And no, no pre-op on my poster - I was 14. It mainly included Snake and a skyline of cleveland that I had made to look semi-destroyed and on fire.
