Finally watched THE BOY & THE HERON.

The first hour is SO slow and meandering, moreso than most Ghibli works...but about halfway it clicked what Miyazaki was doing. In his old age he's found that he needs to apologize for how his focus on his art took him from family and social obligations, including straining relations with his son and wife. Once I realized that, it slotted more into place and I was able to see it not as meandering, but more sequences and vignettes as thought, and memory. An excellent movie.

It's not going to ever be my fave Ghibli, and is probably on the lower rungs overall, but still a very good film from a studio that I love.

The Gorge on AppleTV was not terrible. Cheesy and predictable, yes. But fun. It’s a good popcorn flick.

I finally watched DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS: HONOUR AMONGST THIEVES and bit it was a hoot! I'm not a DnD player but I've been in the fantasy/nerd fandom arena for the best part of 4 decades now so I'm definitely adjacent and have picked up a few bits and pieces along the way. It was such a good film TBF and my wife who is less knowledgeable than I didn't need any explanations to keep up. It's good that they've used the classes/races without having to into dump about what everyone can do etc. and I enjoyed the references I did get (Never winter/Baldurs Gate/mention of a beholder or paladin etc)

We laughed lots, especially with the fat dragon in that cave and Regé Jean Page was brilliant in his role especially IMO.

Its a totally underrated film, really entertaining.

Just saw the best film of the year in the cinema around here this year. Local theater was showing Heat which is something of a favorite. Strange to see a movie with only a crowd who goes to see a great film, not had that kind of atmosphere in the cinema for years. Certainly going to see more old timers that I missed on the cinema, a really awesome experience.

Fucking spectacular, I'd say. I'm so glad they've given Dan Trachtenberg the keys to the Predator kingdom. PREY was also amazing. He knows how to make a tight film with these characters and tropes, keep it interesting, paced to kill, and yet link them together in clever ways!

Re-watched all three series of THE INBETWEENERS on Prime and it's still good. Some of it hasn't aged particularly well, but still good, so then I chose to I re-watch the first movie and it also holds up very well and is a nice dovetailed end to the series...the second movie is so pointlessly foul and I'm simply not going to watch. I'm going to assume all the guys and the girls they ended up with from Malia are happily ever after.

Went to se F1: The Movie yesterday.

It was REALLY great throughout. Like it's TOP GUN MAVERICK, with Cars instead of jets and a dash of MONEYBALL "tactics". Great score and soundtrack. Pitt and Idris were solid, but I think that Javier Bardem and Kerry Condon run away with the MVP's of the acting in the movie. It was kinetic, and pacey and well shot. I could have done without the love story element, but honestly it barely intrudes on the main plot anyways, so it wasn't that much of an annoyance (maybe ten overall minutes in 2.5 hours).

I was so invested by the end that I could not take my eyes off the screen in the last few races.

WELL worth the time, and the theatre visit.

Re-watched IT'S ALL GONE PETE TONG (it's currently on Prime), and man does that movie hold up. I saw it at a test screening way back in like 2003 and we loved it then, but yeah what a GREAT comedy movie with a tonne of heart and charm. Paul Kaye is amazing in it.

SKI PATROL (1991)...dude I saw this movie in theatres, and I don't recall the incidental music being so VERY 80's with saxophone and whatnot...also, this very much fits into the mold of the story that SO many movies like this copied from Seven Samurai.

Anyways, it's still pretty good, not as funny as other comedies from the era, like POLICE ACADEMY or MOVING VIOLATIONS or SUMMER SCHOOL, but still enjoyable overall.

UP THE CREEK (1984)....oof, I seem to recall liking this as a kid, but I would put good money down on it being one of the first movies where I saw nudity the first time, so I'll chalk it up to that, cause it's not good. There are about 3 really funny jokes, but the rest lands with a thud. The only interesting thing is the lead inexplicably narrates what happens to him like he's in a moody detective novel. But yeah, this one didn't hold up.

That reminds me, I re-watched Meatballs at some point in the past few years, like mid-pandemic, and it was pretty decent. Nothing amazing but it is crazy that it only took one sequel to go from prototypical summer camp movie to getting a visit from a stoner alien (I did not rewatch Meatballs 2).
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Accurate, see also UP THE CREEK trying to capture that same audience.

There was a bunch of these "young people do raunchy stuff in ________ setting" movies in the mid to late 80's early 90's

Watched Martin Bourboulon’s 2023 movie THE THREE MUSKETEERS: D’ARTAGNAN (Part 1), which is totally French language (barring scenes with the Duke of Buckingham; and the brief sojourn in England) and quite frankly is one of (if not THE definitive; though I admit it makes some narrative changes but they are for the good) adaptation of the Dumas books. I wanted to see it as a fan of the book and other adaptations, and adding the brilliant Vincent Cassell (Athos) into the mix, and Eva Green (Milady) were just bonuses really.

But yeah, what an EXCEPTIONALLY well made movie. I rented it and threw it on quickly just to see the opening and see the scene on the stairs between Athos and D’Artagnan, and the moment Cassell delivered the exact line of the novel “Is that all?” when D’Artagnan bruskly apologizes for running into him I knew I was in for a treat…and then I just sat and watched all two hours because it sucked me right in. Kinetic action with dynamic camera choices and movements that made for a visceral experience, while not being too close up, or too chaotic either. The action director should be proud, as should the DOP as some of the scenes were like paintings in how they were lit and presented. Hell, a chase scene between Milady and D’Artagnan on the edge of the white Dover cliffs is shot from above and keeps the cliff edge in the middle of the shot, grass on one side and lapping ocean on the other and the camera glides effortlessly along it. Just exquisite.

I cannot wait to watch Part 2 (THE THREE MUSKETEERS: MILADY), and I feel like when it’s done it will be my favourite adaptation for sure.

If you’re into this type of swashbuckling stuff, you’ll enjoy this.

I hear they’ve’ commissioned two spinoff TV series for Pathé, so that’s dope too.
