KPOP DEMON HUNTERS has no right to be that much fun.

I've now watched it 3 times. Twice with my Kpop loving daughter who is OBSESSED with it.

But yeah, I think a good argument exists for it being THE BEST Netflix-distributed movie of all time...and it's on par with the Spiderverse movies for how genuinely great it is. I want a bluray copy when that comes out.

Small people of my acquaintance are full blown obsessed with it. The soundtrack has made its way into my spotify. I worked out to Takedown yesterday. I have been asked (told) to find four other full grown adult males to wear Saja Boys hat/cloak costumes and follow three 8yo girls around on Halloween. This thankfully replaces the earlier plan to dress up as Tanjiro from Demon Slayer and carry an 8yo, in a box, on my back. Plus candy.

Fun fact - it's rumoured / i believe - that the only reason Sony Animation had the time and resources to make this was bcs Beyond The Spiderverse 2 has been such a mess.

Amazing. Also my daughters first legit crush is Jinu from the Saja boys...she likes swoons over him...and when I told her that the voice actor who plays him lives in Mississauga, she nearly fainted. LOL

Amazingly, the creators said that everyone is based on real Kpop stars...and Rumi is based on Jenni (my fave member of Blackpink), and Mira is based on Yeji (my fave member of Itzy)....so I was bound to love this movie.

Watched it again. 4th time. I don't know what it is, but it's probably that as a KPop fan I'm in on all the subtle Kpop jokes, and as a K-Drama fan I'm in on those easter eggs too (Juni grabbing Rumi's hand as she tries to walk away, and they look longingly at each other in silence? 100% K-Drama), I'm just so entertained by it.

Taking daughter to se BLACKPINK in a few weeks, and she's ordered a Rumi costume to wear at the show. Amazing.

My kpop/kdrama knowledge is limited but i'm familiar enough to catch some of it. Their entire scene at the wall, music number included, was utterly channeling kdramas. I laughed so hard. I thought some of the other stuff like the spa and their PR assistant and Mira's back-story were in the same vein.

I love everything about this and demand a full report!

Waiting to see whether we get a sequel movie or series. Also, demon tongue cat plushies.

I was surprised to see that while there are lines in Korean in every song, there are no entirely Korean versions.

I think a sequel is on the cards for sure, but we will have to wait and see. It's like the most popular movie on Netflix right now by a long shot, and it dropped to #2 briefly in week 2 so Kpop Stans got back on and rewatched it to shove it back into #1.

Most K-pop by these types of artists is a mix of English and Korean; Blackpink, BTS, Stray Kids, Itzy, Twice...all mix of English and Korean...Older Korean pop from the 80's tended to be more exclusively Korean.

Black hat w beads. Black cloak. Less permanent, more likely to be extensively instagrammed.

Watched THE THREE MUSKETEERS: MILADY last night, the sequel to D'ARTAGNAN...the first half of the story in that first film changed some of the book, but not tonnes...the second half changes a LOT....but I'm not complaining, the guts of the story were still there...I think the only thing that it changes that affects the overall plot is:

Spoiler

It was good....but it was not quite as good as Part 1, but still very enjoyable...AND it ends of a cliffhanger...which originally may not have continued (these two didn't do as good at the box office as they wanted) but the success of Bourboron's COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO which he made after them was a massive success so they've greenlit TWENTY YEARS AFTER for 2027....so phew, the story will continue!

Anyways. Both films are probably my fave Musketeers Adaptation so far, even with all the changes....and Vincent Cassel remains the PERFECT Athos.

Tsui Hark's LEGEND OF THE CONDOR HEROES: THE GALLANTS is up for rental finally (I missed it in theatres), and since I've recently read 3 of the 4 Jin Yong books in the first series of this story (and watched a decent TV adaptation from 2021) I can't wait to see what Tsui Hark did with it! I'll be watching tonight! The two who play Guo Jing and Huang Ro are going to be the clinchers here...but then again, the whole cast is important to the story, so I'm happy to see everyone.

Tsui Hark's LEGEND OF THE CONDOR HEROES: THE GALLANTS....oh my gods I'm angry.

As a fan of these books, and this story...I don't know what the fuck Tsui Hark was thinking. First of all I THOUGHT that since this was his first stab at the Condo Heroes story that he would be slowly adapting all of it movie by movie...this is not the case...he's adapted 3/4 of the FOURTH book....the first ten minutes before the credits is an ungodly mess as he's basically trying to mash 3 books worth of story into that ten minutes as a "catch up", but it touches on nothing that's important and ignores MOST of what make the story what it is....like we just jump in and Guo Jing is already a proficient martial artist, he's separated from Huang Rong already...like we don't even know who these people ARE yet....Had I not read the books and knew what was going on or what he was talking about, you'd be SO VERY LOST.

The first thing after the narrative settles down (to inexplicably tell the 35th to 39th chapters of this 40 chapter story) that stood out to me was the translation...it's in the toilet garbage. Like It's not translation (like Gigi Cheng translates the books and knows that translation is an art) in the colloquial sense....someone just converted all the words directly to English from Mandarin...as such, it's hard as fuck to understand as Chinese is not a direct 1:1 with English and needs interpretation. Add in that this happens over the jumbled time jumpy insanely stupid opening and I was already mad.

Now these books are a Kung Fu Epic. A Martial Arts Epic that happens to have magic (Qi)...so the fights happen, people punch and kick, but sometimes they also can fly around and use big techniques that utilize wind and such..,..but it's still CONTACT Martial arts. In this no one comes near to touching anyone else...it's ALL Qi magic wind...like what? The fight scenes were therefore sterile and uninteresting.

This story is a coming of age story and a heroes journey where who the kids parents are is important, who both him and his nemesis (Yang Kang) are is important, they have daggers that are important, their mothers are important, their adoptive families are important (Yang Kang has the Jin Empire prince, and Guo Jing has the Mongols and Ghengis Khan), how he learns from the 7 Freaks of the South first, and then from each of the 5 martial world masters in turn (whether through them being good or villains), his relationship with Rong is important, he father is important, the island they come from is important, the OHTER students he had is important, as is the book they had...NONE OF THIS is present.

They literally focus down on the Mongols battle in the 4th book, and the rest of it they don't care about. And amusingly, the portion of the books that a CCP govt would be most interested in funding Hark to make...because it's about defeating the Mongols. It's WAY more overall jingoistic than you'd expect a massive fantasy epic to be.....and they could not hide the production logos that are clearly CCP govt funding logos at the start. So that's definitely at play here.

But yeah, none of the elements of the story that make it compelling are present. NONE of them. Like this story is at its core about the two martial brothers Guo Jing and Yang Kang...their fathers and mothers were best friends and swore that their kids would fight and die for each other if need be and would be linked. They hired a Daoist to make sure thus happened, but then the village they are in is attacked by the Jin Empire and the mothers are separated, one escapes to the North and the Mongols where Guo Jing is raised, and the other is taken captive by the Prince of the Jin and taken to be raised and spoiled in royal court...like that's HUGELY important to who Guo Jing is and what happens to him...and neither the parents, the Daoist, OR even Yang Kang are in this at all...or mentioned. It's basically like someone used the portion of the book that is about war with the Mongols as a template for their own movie and disregarded everything that makes this story endure.

The backdrops are occasionally nice (I'll give it that), but the SFX are garbagio. the acting is fine I guess? But the lead is not good as Guo Jing....the girl who plays Huang Rong is decent, but (and this may sound petty but) she's also super homely looking...the whole point of Rong is that she's gorgeous and Guo Jing chooses her over all the other women who come into his life...

Like the 2017 TV adaptation of this story is LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than this shitty movie, if you ever want to see this story done at least TV level justice? Watch that (it's on YouTube) with English subtitles. And because there is no way I'm endorsing whatever 74-year old Tsui Hark made....See trailer for the 2017 TV version below instead:
