PS: they're not very well trapped are they.

This one really isn't that difficult...you've got lots of questions to ask, which simplifies matters.

Sir Thursday
Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

I vote Impirion is right. Damn you STD, you keep forgetting that most of us mere mortals have brains that have been turned to mush though excessive drinking and the imbibing of non/ medicinal drugs for a significant portion of our lives...BTW I never inhaled.

I've tried to wrap my head round it, but it hurts so I'm going to have a crack at it tomorrow...

Trapped in a room
Are 7 men
Holding 7 keys
To Seven doors
3 tell lies
3 tell truth
The one that you want tells both.
Seven questions you can spare.
To find out who he is and where.

What are your questions? Note that you can't direct a single question at everybody (that would be cheating), and that each man holds the key to the door he is standing next to.

Sir Thursday

Oh, lord, I remember one like this... Give me a while.
“People have wanted to narrate since first we banged rocks together & wondered about fire. There’ll be tellings as long as there are any of us here, until the stars disappear one by one like turned-out lights.”

You ask each man to point to all the other men in the room who are able to tell either only the truth or only a lie, but not both.

Someone will be pointed at by 3 men(liars) while they don't point at anyone else, and not pointed at by 3 others(truth), while all others are pointed at.

Assuming each one will answer a question if he can:
Ask each one "Are the statements 'You always tell the truth.' and 'You will answer this question "No.".' both true or both false?"

The liars and truth-tellers will be unable to answer. The one who does answer has the right key.

eta - damnit humperdinck!

Yeah, I guess that works, although it kind of stretches the seven questions somewhat. Here is the method I was thinking of:

1) Ask the first three people to give you the answer to a question you know the answer to (for example "What's 2+2?"). You will either get two true or two false answers.

2) If you get two true answers, then you can be sure that one of the two is a truthteller, even if the other one is the one who can do both. So you ask the two people who gave you true answers "Who is the man who can tell both truth and lies?" If they both give the same answer, then that's the guy you're looking for. If they give different answers, then one of the two must be the one you're looking for. In that case, you ask the known liar which one of the two is the one you are looking for, and the one you want is the other one.

3) If you get two liars and one truthteller, then you ask both liars to tell you which of the men you haven't questioned yet can only tell a lie. They will therefore identify for you at least one person who can tell the truth. Now you have two people who can tell the truth you can follow the process outlined in Step 2 to determine who the man you want is.

Its so simple when you point out how to do it. I also like the way you introduced diplomacy and tact with regards to the last answer. You're a good man charlie brown.

Right its Maccy who's up for riddling us quick.

Oh, I don't doubt you can do it in less. There are tons of different methods to do it in 6. You can just modify my solution so that when you get two liars you ask "Who am I not looking for?", for example. But I don't like asking that question, so I figured I'd post a solution without it :).
