yeah i didn't find anything about gruntles role in the siege unrealistic... the chosen warrior of a war god, filling a house to the brim with the slain? sounds pretty spot on to me

I never said it was unrealistic, just a little implausible.

other way round. it is a bit unrealistic, but in the context not implausible.

The siege is fantastic, though gruntle aint one of my favourite characters, and the house body bit etc seemed a bit unrealistic, considering how easily treach himself died, how "paltry" his power is etc.

Treach died against I don't know how many KCCM while Gruntle fighted against completely normal humans which Treach could have probably disembowelled any time. The comparison isn't fair.
Plus I do believe Treach gained some more power after his death and ascension.

I believe the number was 2.
Or perhaps 3.

Treach had to die...to become more powerful? Yet another conspiracy, or just natural demise?

You are saying that out of all the contents in these last 8 books you find that implausible?

After all the books I still have to say that my favourite character is...
Kallor (surprise, surprise).
And my favourite scene would be Kallor's betrayal outside Coral from Memories of Ice (which was the first Erikson I read). Second is maybe the first meeting of Brood, Silverfox, Anomandaris, Kallor and the Malazans in MoI.
But there are so many good scenes that I can't even remember all of them.

I loved when Onearm's Host fought the Pannions outside of Capustan in MoI. Beautiful, clinical execution of skill.

pg 512 of Deadhouse Gates definitely. Coltaine and the 7th getting mashed, the feeling of despair as the Khundryl chief rides over. The lack of detail in the battle, contrasting the previous battles, makes you feel as if SE can't bear to write about the upcoming defeat and I was fully prepared for that thread of the story to shut off mid-book. The defection of the Khundryl was just awesome and the last bit where he shouted "The Wickans, the Wickans" just made me feel euphoric!

I just re-read the part of House of Chains when Fiddler aka at the moment Strings meets gesler and Stormy and knows who they are and they know who he is by reputation and stormy asks gesler that maybe they should have changed names as well. Then they decide to go to a bar and tell each others tales and Gesler bets his is better than Fiddlers and Fiddler is like ...I wouldn't be too sure about that.
BTW I think Fiddlers story from Pale to Darujhistan to seven cities (causing the BB's to ascend) and the azath with Icarium and then to Malaz City is better than Gesler and the black boat and traveling through Starvald Demelain.
Sincerely
L'oric

man i totally know what you mean. i measure books by the number of thrills they send through my body. when i read that scene after the battle for the first time chills and shivers of euphoria took me. but the siege of capustan has given me the most of those, almost every other page i was closing my eyes and thinking "this writing is like a drug"

For me it's between Fid and Ganoes. Can't pick one. Qb and Tehol too, of course.
Scenes...there's a lot, but on top of my head, Kalam taking out the claw at the end of BH and the scenes around it really got stuck in my head.

I am stunned that no body has mentioned whiskey jack yet. He epitomises all that is great about the Malazan empire.
Favourite scene has to be Tehol and the chickens or Brys and Rauld.

Oh hell yeah, that was awesome!
On the same vein, when after a huge running battle after Sanimon Lull walks up to Duiker, says "The Fist has reached a decision" and, you suddenly realise what's going to happen. Very deep.
Suck it Errant!

Favorite scene at the moment (I am re-reading the series again, and just finished Reaper's Gale for the second or third time), I agree with Xardean.
Quick Ben, Fiddler, and Hedge messing up Silchas Ruin's whole weekend. Because of what Fiddler said afterwords:
"This ain't your fight," he said to the distant creature. "Fucking dragon."
Epitomizes the Bridgeburners, in my opinion.
And I really wish Mr. Erikson had entered a brief PoV from Silchas Ruin-something along the lines of "Okay, now what the hell just happened? I'm flying along, singing Ride of the Valkyries to myself, ready to lay some waste-now I'm on the ground bleeding".
My favorite characters are Paran, Fiddler, Quick Ben, Kalam-basically Whiskeyjack's squad from GotM , in no particular order. I can't wait to read a chapter in which Paran loses his temper. He's going to seriously mess someone(s) up. I'd really like to see an awful lot more written about Blues, too.
