Yes, indeed, entertaining (though very focussed on POV charachter, so thats a bit boring) and pointless. Yes there are battles, but the characters aren't really influenced by them.
...Every tale is a gift,
And the scars bourne by us both,
are easily missed,
In the distance between us.
-Fisher-
Don't be blind,
Mind,
To be kind,
For you will find,
Kindness has its own rewards,
and each must find his way to heaven

And this is where i (politely) disagree. I mean, beyong the preachiness and richard worship, its still shite. first, its overexteneded,im sure everyone agrees it should never have been this long. Second, the sudden change of pov to characters whom we have no interest in and probably die in the end. This is particularly noteable in Apt's final book, Soul of The Fire. I mean, come on, do you care (and im speaking from the pov of someone who does not utterly abhor goodking already)? When i stppped reading, it wasnt just that the preachiness had suddenly reached an all time max ( in book eight, in which richard pulls a reason out of his arse to stop being a vegetarian. I mean, come on) but that the plot seemed to be going nowhere. Goodking sucks on all levels.

I'm sorry, but absolutely trashing every single aspect of someone's writing simply because you dislike one aspect (the preaching) is exaggerating its flaws. Even when 'politely disagree'ing about the subject that it is viable popcorn reading, you've cited its preachiness as your chief flaw.
And if you're going to point out individual books and plots, you'll have to name specific situations. I personally read the first 9 or so a full 4 years ago. The only book that remains remotely solid in my memory is Confessor, the last book in the series. But don't think I've forgotten them because they were 'bad' (although they had their many flaws). I don't recall the details of any book I haven't read in the last year or 2.
The plot in Goodkind's books moves fairly fast, especially when you compare it to, say, Jordan. I think of each installment as almost like an episode in a TV show--each episode introduces a new villain who is defeated at the episode's end. That has its many flaws, of course, including my preference for shows such as Dexter over, say, the first half of season 1 of Supernatural. And there's a plot arc of sorts, however bogged down by his objectivist philosophy, that undeniably does reach its conclusion at the end.

-Sixty, who really would prefer more twilight-bashing and less goodkind-bashing.

We've gone over the rational reasons why he sucks too many times already. It's all been said, there's nothing left but mindless bashing.

I think he was just referring to that being the last book I attempted to read.
At least, that's what I'm hoping he ment.

APT IS GOODKIND. I KNEW IT!!!

:Surprise: That explains so much!

'Tell me, Tool, what dominates your thoughts?'
The Imass shrugged before replying. 'I think of Mafia, Adjunct.'
'Do all Imass think about Mafia?'
'No. Few think at all.'
'Why is that?'
The Imass leaned his head to one side and regarded her. 'Because, Adjunct, they are sheeple.'
Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that frisbee getting bigger?" ... and then it hits me.

On the spectrum of book badness, I'd say it'd be more along the lines of:
10 (worst): Random shit fanfic
9: Twilight
5: Goodkind
0~-10: Everything good

So I migrated over from the Westeros.org forums... and find another incarnation of Goodkind bashing!!

Badkind-bashing is like pizza. Everyone loves it.

For me, the worst thing about SoT is how blatant the Mary-Sue-ness of Richard is.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

I think I've run out of things to bash Tairy for...this is disturbing. Perhaps it is because I only read one book:P
Couldn't go on after that, needed years of therapy only to look at another fantasy book again. Fortunately, I found Erikson and saw the light!

Some years ago I bought Wizard's First Rule for like $2.99 (Special Complete Edition (sic!)) (supercheap edition to hook new readers), but never got more than about 1/3 into it before abandoning it. Ever since I've been thinking about giving it a second try, but it hasn't happened yet. Reading this thread made me finally take it out of my shelf, for good. It's going away for good, to the Salvation Army! Or is that just cruel? Maybe I should recycle it. That paper could be used for something good! My poor Steven Erikson books have been standing right next to this crapshit for too long a time
I hope they'll be happier now!
Really, the quotes in this thread, and the thread itself + Badkind's apparent obsession with his Philosophy (Which Is The Only Truth In The Universe And It Must Be Preached To Everyone) + the recent news of him starting a new series/trilogy which starts *exactly* like SOT made me realize that I will never ever attempt to read anything by him ever again!
Thank Soliel (Lady of Health) for directing me to Steven Erikson!

Shining Enigma? Sir, you are sorely mistaken. I am a simple seeker of truth, a soul that seems so single-minded as to be a simpleton. This secretive scholar and scientist, sorrowfully the sole soldier of his cause, stands straight to support and strengthen the philosophy of the saviour Goodkind. Simply put, I stand in solitude against the spite that speeds towards several spectacularly insightful philosophies that, should I succesfully survive this storm, I hope to spread.
Sadly, it seems I speak so spiritfully I am surprised I haven't started anew, so let me say that I am seldom more satisfied than I am now, and it should suffice to call me the Shining Enigma.
I mean, Rahl.

The amount of words starting with 's' in this post is astonishing! This guy can't be serious!

One more. From Wikipedia's page on Richard:
"He always insists on knowing the truth of things. He does not fear the truth, nor does he always tell the truth, if a lie would be more convenient."
If that ain't a self-contradiction, I don't know what is.
The Truth Always And Always The Truth, unless if it's inconvenient??? If Wikipedia is right, then, well, I have already lost any respect for Mr. Goodkind, so now he owes me some.

This is true.
You are better off destroying it with thermite, regular fire won’t do.
Incidently, did you know that global warming is actually caused by the millions of people trying to get rid of their Badkind books with thermite?
