Just tell him he's a fuckwit, mic drop and walk off.

Alternatively do what I do with such people that I can't fire, hold back on the advice and help, let them sink publicly if they are being an arsehole and/or continue doing stupid shit and refuse any guidance or help

My person is the way they are because they do not do enough of the fundamentals of coordination or admin stuff to support the tasks they want to take and the projects they want to do. They want the training wheels off and the freedom to do what they want to do, yet they are not able to manage themselves out of a wet paper bag.

We've got one of these in our team. The lack of underpinning fundamentals is paired with a hugely overinflated sense of their own abilities, and then when they don't get given new work or picked for projects they have a heightened sense of victimhood. They are young and quite naive, and my suspicion for a while has been that someone (either at home or another colleague) is winding them up, because for every sensible conversation I or our manager has had with her, the next time we speak she's talking about "government rules" and average salaries for her age bracket with an attitude of how hard done to she is when she's this brilliant. I could be wrong on the someone winding her up part, but that's my hunch.

Also, if I hear "I have a law degree with honours" one more time from her, I may have to scream. We work in IP - it might be law adjacent in a sense, but that law degree is not doing anything like the heavy lifting you're expecting it to.

I work with this guy who is absolutely useless. His uselessness makes more work for me and is very hard to manage. He joined the company a couple of years ago now and I've really tried to help him get embedded and do his job well. He never takes notes, never absorbs any real detail, we go over the same issues again and again with no solutions because it's like his memory has been wiped every time we discuss it. He doesn't have any kind of condition, he's just useless and too busy trying to show off to listen. He's at the same level as me in the management structure so I can't invoke hierarchy. His manager knows he is useless but doesn't have the bandwidth to do anything about it (I'm technically mad about this but I also sympathise). He won't accept or ask for any help to get better at his job. He puts me down in front of people whenever he gets chance but can't make a decision without checking with me 1 on 1. Fortunately everyone knows I can do my job so he only embarrasses himself trying to get one up on me. I helped interview him so it's on me as much as anyone else that we made a bad hire.

Usually I only call him out in 1 on 1 calls when I have to repeat myself to him or he does something stupid. I've given him constructive 360 feedback. Recently I upped it to small meetings and emails with only a few people copied and who I know agree with me. Today I did it in a meeting with 40 plus people in it.

I'm completely justified SO WHY DO I FEEL TERRIBLE?!?

We had two like this. We are still cleaning the messes up, some months on after the last of them went. And of course, those messes are tangled webs, which take time, which puts me and my guys behind on the other stuff we need to do.

So much for intranasal vaccines in the US while Trump is still Go*-Emperor... so I'll keep isolating and wearing P100 masks (or better, if necessary for the new pandemics) for the foreseeable future:

Quote

Even though we've seen multiple Covid vaccines protective against infections in animal models of mice, hamsters, and nonhuman primates, proving that in people, with durable protection (such as a vaccine spray every 3 or 4 months), remains to be seen. I am optimistic this goal will be achieved for SARS-CoV-2 from the totality of evidence we have so far, but we're at least a year away from the read outs from the programs that are the furthest along. [...] Note I have only highlighted the 6 programs in the US, since nasal vaccine programs in other countries are unlikely to get authorized here without trials conducted in the US.

Perhaps the most formidable and third challenge is the continued US support for the Covid nasal vaccines. The 3 programs that are in late stage trials are all supported by BARDA/Project NextGen. The two Phase 1 trials at NIH are also government subsidized. With the new administration, and potential disregard for continued waves of Covid in the future, along with a policy that does not support any vaccines, no. less reduced NIH support for research, there is serious jeopardy of all of the work toward Covid nasal vaccines. Withdrawing support for these programs would essentially pull the rug out for any hope to have a nasal Covid vaccine in the US over the foreseeable future.

https://erictopol.su...-vaccine-update

OTOH 3M released a new P100 mask that has a built-in seal test and a "speaking diaphragm" to help render you more intelligible... but I didn't find any objective data on how accurate the seal test is relative to a quantitative fit test. I found anecdotal claims of high accuracy---if stubble is first eliminated---in a Reddit thread, but I wouldn't want to bet my brain (much less my life) on that.... From the Reddit thread:

Quote

easy way to test for fit test failures. Keep a bottle of alcohol-heavy hand sanitizer in your car. Use it, wave your hands around your face. If you smell the alcohol, adjust the fit, and blow out to clear the mask and then try again. Kept me safe so far.

https://www.reddit.c...sh_button_seal/

Huh. Hmm. You could also carry a bottle of hand sanitizer with you to use before entering buildings.

[Edit: on second thought the "alcohol fit test" would probably work better in an enclosed space like a car, but if you get your alcohol-drenched fingertips up close to where the air goes in then it might work... provided the wind isn't blowing it away---though in that case perhaps you could try to place your face in the direction that the wind is blowing, and move it with the winds if need be]

I have noticed how on so many comment threads on YouTube or any social media platform are some version of

I am a black/white Jew/Muslim/christian from ‘country’ and I stand with/support/agree with you.

The purpose of the comments is usually to highlight how if a Jew is agreeing with a Muslim for example the point must be true. It happens even on small accounts. I could believe it’s human nature to hop on a trend and copy it but I am becoming very wary that it’s really a signal about how many paid accounts, bots, ai etc must be out there.

Yesterday was disappointing.

I reserved a hertz car for work, I needed to travel out of state. When I arrived at the location they told me the car I reserved wasn’t available. No problem I said any car is fine, I didn’t see any need or benefit or arguing for the suv I booked. They had no cars available they told me. What? I had reserved and paid in advance. So i told the women behind the counter to speak to one of the other hertz locations and find me a car. She started screaming at me that it wasn’t her job. I called an uber to go back home thinking I’ll figure out my options from there. She was still screaming at me that it wasn’t her job. I told her I had already stopped talking to her.

I am genuinely baffled by the whole interaction. I see no benefit to arguing with a women who clearly has no interest in doing her job so I made a new reservation at a different location, called the elite status helpline who refunded me the money at the first location. However I end up the loser because I made two wasted Uber trips to the first Location and making a reservation the morning of cost me more money than the original booking cost. So I lost 130 dollars and time.

Started using dating apps again. I had a a very brief exchange with a women, I actually remember thinking I should screenshot it because I thought it was a strange question so early. Literally her second was to ask if I bought a house when I moved to Boston. I said I was renting. She unmatched me. lol. I mean at least ask my net worth, renters can still be rich.

I’m not bummed I lost out on dating this incredible women, I’m just bummed to be reminded that dating is hell.

Had this happen a few times with Hertz, one specific location, very annoying.

So Bond is now in the hands of Amazon. Damn. :(

https://www.news.com...7d974ff5415295f

The long-serving producers behind James Bond have handed over creative control of the beloved franchise to Amazon MGM Studios.

Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli made the announcement on Thursday after a deal was forged with the entertainment giant to release onto it the intellectual property rights of the British spy tales.

Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman first launched the Bond films back in 1962, with Broccoli’s daughter and stepson later taking over.

The family has been producing the films through their UK-based company EON, which is behind some of its biggest commercial successes, including Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall.

Under the new deal, Wilson and Broccoli will remain co-owners of the iconic franchise, while all creative control now moves over to Amazon.

“With my 007 career spanning nearly 60 incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects. Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future,” Wilson said in a statement.

Broccoli added: “My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli.

“I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”

Speculation has been rife in Hollywood for years over who will take over the coveted role, with the most recent reports suggesting British actor Aaron-Taylor Johnson was a frontrunner after impressing Broccoli during a screen test.

However, now that she is no longer behind the wheel creatively, that may no longer be the case.

There are currently no plans in place for the next film.

Brutally young for that to happen.

It sounds like possible complications from a liver transplant, or perhaps whatever reason she needed one.

So sad!

If I had to guess, I'd say carbon monoxide poisoning since the dog died too. Sad stuff.

That's what's being thrown around but nothing official has been released. He had an amazing career, great actor, likely the bestest Lex Luthor ever.

He was so freaking good as Luthor.

To be fair, he was phenomenal in everything. Watching Hoosiers with the kids tonight and Unforgiven after they’re asleep.

The deaths have now been ruled suspicious and have been deemed to require a full investigation.

- The front door of the residence was unsecured and opened and no gas leak (CO) present.

- Pills were found scattered next to Betsy's (his wife) head as was a space heater.
