At my office they are having a cake for a man who sadly died two weeks ago for what would have been his 55th birthday...

...and I find it decidedly morbid to gather us around and celebrate his would-have-been birthday.

Probably just me, but it's kind of messing with my groove as I miss the guy, but I find this in odd taste...

He can sing all he likes whenever he likes, and if he dreams of a career and works to achieve it, more power to him. I doubt miss Cole would disagree about that. What she disagrees with is that he should do it on 'her' (read: Cowell's) show.

It is a simple fact in life that if you participate in a TV talent show, you will be criticized not just on the quality of your singing but even more on how well a mainstream record label can market you, and how many people will send in text messages to see you through to the next round.

That is her job there: sifting out the good from the bad, the marketable from the not marketable and the mainstream from the niche, so that in the end there's a winner who will sell singles, make 1 cd that will sell well, and who is easily displaced and forgotten by his own clone the time next year's competition comes around. It is not fair. It is TV.

That's not even her job. Her job is to sit there and look stunning, to lull anyone who might have a semi decent taste in music into watching the show nonetheless. Cos let's face it, the X Factor has absolutely nothing to do with music in the slightest.

She does do that job well, fair play to her. :)

The Aussie LCPL killed today was from my unit. He left with the deployment last year before I got there, but some people here knew him.

It's not just you, that seems a really odd thing to do. Especially with cake. Maybe a scotch and a toast to the poor fellow, but eating cake just seems off.

In my own life, I have had two long weekends since New Years. On both of them, my parents managed to be in town for some other reason and so stayed at my place. I have just found out that the start of my next long weekend coincides with their return from a cruise, and since I live near the airport they expect to be staying at my house again for the duration of the long weekend. I may start job searching elsewhere so that I can move further away from them and actually get a long weekend with freinds for once (or go camping, on a quick trip, etc. in other words, actually have a long weekend).

Yeah that's a bummer. Today we had a toast to my uncle's fallen comrades. He did 3 tours in Iraq and lost a bunch of friends.

For me, I'm torn about something and I won't be able to resolve it either way for the next 3 weeks either. Won't let me sleep at night and I get weird dreams once I manage to fall asleep.

Firefox won't show my iGoogle page correctly!!!

Go to Internet options and click Settings under ther Search section of the General tab:

Number of downloads: 0

Then right click on Google and click Set as default. If Google's not there, there's a link at the bottom for Find more search providers...

Try clicking on that and then searching for Google to add it to the list.



If you've done all that and it's just being queer, then WTF.

I've been doing a lot of thinking about how my job is going, what I'm enjoying and not enjoying about it and I think I've come to the conclusion that having rank (even as low as mine) sucks. I'm not designed to be a leader or a manager, and I loathe being responsible for anyone's actions apart from my own. I spend more effort (and acquire more stress) making sure people around me aren't fucking up than I would if I just did everything myself. At least if I did it all myself all the mistakes would be mine. :)

I think I might have a quiet word with my boss and hand in my rank when I get back, or at least let him know it's my intention and do it after someone in my section at work leaves, because he's a dipshit and I'll keep the rank just to make sure he can't do anything (extra) dopey before he leaves.

I just want to go back to being a dumb digger who only has to concentrate on the task in front of them and otherwise doesn't have to think or worry.

Yeah, I've given all that a go, but it uses bloody bing to find other search providers. It comes up with bing, ebay and some other kind of shopping search function. That's it. It won't let me click 'next' to see what other providers there are. So basically it's bing being shit.

Hand your parents the key, put new sheets on the bed, hide your computer and promptly go off on your long weekend with your friends.
