But use colorful language and threaten to cut off his bits and pieces. If you don't want to make a scene take him aside to do it. If you want to make a scene (sometimes those help drive a point) then do it in front of everyone. Your house your rules.

Something's wrong with the chatroom. I had the same problem for several months, used to get kicked out every time I'd enter chat. Then it went back to normal. Have you tried another browser? That worked for me, though it's probably too much of a hassle if you just want to drop in and see what's up.

Went to a wedding. I only have 3 weddings this summer and this was the 2nd. The first one, I managed to weasel out of attending the ceremony and only went to the reception. But for this one, the groom is a much closer friend of mine, so I felt that I had better just get over myself and come out and show my support. No sooner had the officiant welcomed the guests and started going on about love and two becoming one and being stronger together as a couple than I had to close my eyes, but the tears still leaked out the sides.The vow exchange was also pretty hard to take. And I'm not normally a crier, so, being an idiot, I forgot to pack tissues. I really wanted to step out and take a breather, but how would that look? No other way but to sit there and sniffle and pretend I was just really moved by the beautiful ceremony.

I used to love weddings and seeing old friends that I haven't seen in a while, but ever since my ex left me, they've been mostly just a stressful emotional trigger. I still have the reception to get through, but thankfully it's Chinese banquet style. Nothing like stuffing yourself with a 3hr, 10+ course seafood meal to cheer a person up. If there's dancing, that will be the icing on the cake. And come to think of it, I'm pretty sure there will be cake, which helps too.

I'm pretty down at the moment. My PhD has been going slowly of late and yet I am finally making some headway but my supervisor is unhappy with my slow progress and has become so combative and even vindictive (it seems at times) that I feel like he is now half the problem. He switches back and forth between saying things are okay and threatening me with de-registration. He contradicts himself at times and though my advisor seems to have my back she does so only when he is not around which does not help too much. She works for him though so what can I really expect. Its true my progress has been slow, mostly I feel because when My MSc was under examination it took so long that I asked and received permission to start my PhD while it was under examination but the split focus really hurt me. So its been two years but I feel its really been one. I have a year left and the school allows for 4 but he is really on my case. Even little things aggravate him.

This follows on my long held anger that despite asking how I could upgrade my MSc to a PhD and save time he told me he does not believe in it and that its robs students of training. Since I got my MSc and started a new PhD he upgrades everyone, after 6 months of a MSc he will upgrade people. Its a policy change by him and the school but it really frustrates me.

Cause - I'm bored in the office and you give me a perfect opportunity for advice giving :p

Firstly - you're doing a PhD and it is supposed to be really difficult so cut yourself some slack if you are finding it tough going.
Secondly - you're doing a PhD and is supposed to be really difficult so sometimes you just have to suck it up and slog your guts out to get it done irrespective of fucktards above and below.

Finally, the absolute hardest thing that I found about doing mine was keeping my focus and drive in the face of the task. Particularly in the second year and particularly after a long spate of no progress in the lab - I'm talking 6 months without decent experiment results which turns out not to be that weird in terms of research but a total pain when you have a finite amount of time to gain a qualification. One thing I wish I had embraced earlier was that your PhD only has to be good enough. It's not your magnum opus, it just needs to be good enough to get on to the next thing.

Coincidentally I also had a really hard time with my supervisor. He was an absolute git who told me at every turn that my progress wasn't good enough. Sometimes he was right, other times he was being mean. In the end I had to formalise all of our communication into a routine weekly meeting so that I could start to understand his expectations and so that he could understand the legitimate scientific reasons for lack of progress and either help me to figure out how to fix it or at least witness the fact that I was really trying. Forget the upgrade thing and just look to using him to get where you need to go which will sometimes require sucking up and other times standing your ground.
