Still sick, it's NY Eve and of course, we are (as is usual) hosting our NY Party...but three of us are down with colds, so it's going to be lowkey, and probably sucky round our place.
Blerg.
Sick for both Xmas AND New Years.
Fuck this year...seriously, fuck it in the ear.

I've come to learn this endeavor is absolutely wasted time. You cannot change the world (or even your country, city, town or even STREET) one person at a time. You can go out of your way to make a bigger splash in the "I have a voice, and here's why you should listen to me" pool if you like...that would be good...but trying to force people not to be a certain way...that's just not doing anyone least of all yourself, any good. Make YOU a better person, and worry less about the asshat strangers in public. The amount of people who say first-world/white-people problems like people who live in a third-world/non-white people don't have to deal with mundane bullshit like wanting a kindle instead of another e-reader or something. Turns out mostly every country in the world has a middle-class that does indeed deal with mundane problems, it isn't all starving African children and run-down shanty towns. (this is not a response to board members but some people I know)
A number of people can't quite grasp that fact. I usually point out the distinct excess in wealthier parts of Hong Kong or Singapore with the downtrodden parts like Shanghai...still people love to throw that phrase you used out there for their arguments in the hopes that it will somehow stamp people down with some feigned finality. Ignore it. People are dumb and can't grasp that stuff.

Explaining what white privileged is to a person who has lived in a house where both parents pull down six-figures wages, has a paid off house and has five different vehicles. The person is not a bad person obviously, but before I explained to what white privileged was I had to explained to him that his family is probably in the top 5-10 percent in Canada was classified as rich thus even on top of his white privileged he was already privileged via his family's wealth (he thought only being a millionaire was seen as being rich!). Honestly I think kids should be told of there privileges in late elementary or early Jr. high
I don't know that anyone needs to be TOLD specifically of their level of privilege...but educated on the difference between the various incomes, and social statuses around the globe, and the difference between poor, middle class and rich. This way they ought to come to their own conclusions when old enough. TELLING kids about privilege almost makes it out to be a "bad" ting...and it's not, they just happen to be born into it. My parents were well off enough when I was young, two cars, a big house ect. but they always made sure we knew that there are many others who don't have those things...and I never forgot that lesson. I think that's the route "We have money to live well son, but there are others who don't have so much.", and not a direct "You're privileged, accept that son!" A fine line, but it's more a parenting choice, and my parents made sure I knew. If your friend was unaware of his social status, then no offense...his parents didn't do a good job raising him. It's not as much on him, as it is on them.

Coming to terms with when people say "Canada is one of the best Countries in the world!" they usually don't take into account the large amount of well-hidden skeletons in the closest and also coming to terms that a country I always, not only believed, but knew with all my heart was the best place to live had those skeletons in the first place. Added on top of that is my family on the mothers side suffered through residential schools and it fills me with rage/confusion/sadness.
Oh, we all have them. Every country on this planet has skeletons. Bad ones too. They aren't hidden really even well. Canada is no different. Sure we're better than the States, but we've done plenty in our time as we came from the British Empire as well.

The issue I have had with identity recently, showing signs of being a 'mixed-blood' searching for a past that wasn't mine, trying to be more Cree than modern Cree do. It's a tough thing to deal with.
Be who you are...not who your ancestors were. Be a Canadian with a proud native heritage that you support and educate about...but don't forget you are a Canadian first and foremost. The heritage is always going to be there, your family are your link to it. It's not hard to be good and proud of both.

Also I am pretty sure I becoming an alcoholic at the ripe age of 21 and don't know what to do about. Nothing like living up to stereotypes.
We all go through stages like that. Try not drinking during the week at all, and only allowing yourself on weekends. This will help and what I find works best for me.

I know this will be shocking to some, but I disagree with Quick here. A lot of these people hold those views out of fitting in, in an enviroment full of people who may hold the same views or just not complain, and if you make a point that these shitty views are shitty and not to be tolerated that might swing some guys who had no idea these were actually questionable opinions at all. Just clearly be that better person that you are in public and those who could be changed will have made some progress just from you being there! Like magic! Only a lot slower and likely to fail, but who cares? You're not doing this because it's easy, you're doing this because it's right. Plus you get the amazing privilege of being objectively right about things, like how black people deserve not to be discriminated against, or women not assaulted, or any other Correct opinion I hold. And especially don't give up because you're just one man and it's hard. You'd be doing a lot more than you thought you were.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Day 8 of being sick. Blerg. I'm on the tail end and getting better now, but the cough likes to hang around in winter.
And just to clarify on my previous post...I don't feel like doing nothing is the key, rather that trying to do it one person at a time is less helpful to the psyche of the individual looking for change than trying to tackle something bigger and more helpful. A broader scope, if you will... if only because the entire generation that preceded us has been entrenched in those views for 60+ years and little to nothing of what you tell your sexist parents, or racist grandparents will sway them from such thoughts. Old people don't want to change. They don't give a shit. Many, many arguments with people who hold such views in my own family has proven me that. I can shame them till the cows come home, and still those people hold to those terribly racist or sexist views. My sister and I have actually told certain family members that they are NOT to ever discuss those topics / views in front of us ever again...otherwise we'd scream at them...but they still hold those views and nothing we have said over the years has swayed them one bit from their totally wrong stances. Sure, we get to know we are right and feel good about putting them in their place about it...but it's not changing their minds.
And Illy made quite an eloquent, and valid point. I think that may the first time I've written that on these boards. Kudos on that.

Instead of yelling at your toddler to 'hurry the fuck up' as they walk barefooted on hot concrete on a 31° day, why not remove the shopping bag from the pram and put the kid in it? God forbid you have to hold something seeing as you can't even hold your kids hand as you walk through a busy carpark.

Hey Loki, we had 38.4 here yesterday. So 31 is an improvement eh?
God, but I love air conditioning.
I went over to Mum's yesterday and washed and painted her ceiling (paintbrushes for the cornices, otherwise rollers thank goodness). Today my lower back and shoulders are screaming at me, so I had to take a couple of generic Mersyndols. All good now iuiuguhfvhguym, nvndtrcbjyjhgv j

31° is practically bliss compared to yesterday.
It was so hot yesterday that our aircon died due to the electronics board shorting out. Repairman is coming this afternoon thankfully.
EDIT: Nooooooo! Aircon repairman came and has now left and the aircon STILL DOESN'T WORK! Apparently I guessed right and the electronics board has died and the replacement part is extremely expensive so the repairman has to confirm that the owner is willing to replace it. Which means the repairman has to contact the realtor who has to contact the owner and then the realtor has to let the repairman know he can go ahead and replace it.
It's unlikely to be fixed this week
