I'm going to Boston on Thursday for a synthetic biology conference - and I just found out I don't have to present. Which is great, because I loathe public speaking. So now I can just enjoy myself. Any suggestions for Boston from those who've been?

You're going to be very close to the downtown/wharf area if you're staying in the hotels near where that synthetic bio thing is happening.

The Boston aquarium is a tourist destination - but it's also really good.

I strongly recommend going to the Museum of Fine Arts, which is going away from the downtown/wharf area, but not far by public transportation (20 min).

In terms of good eats or bars, I don't know the downtown area at all. You are probably better off going with your connects at the conference to wherever they go.

There's no Red Sox game in town that day and the Bruins haven't started up yet either.

Be prepared for chilly weather that suddenly swings to temperate.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

New job, full benefits, and has nothing to do with my degrees!

So ecstatic and nervous to start I feel like I'm a 1L again!

Yaaaaaaaaaaay! Student loans here I come, kinda, maybe, well probably not, but nevertheless!

Of the 4 houses i've got for sale atm, i've received offers on 2 this week and i think i'll be able to rent the other for a while and get a little income.

Good week so far.

Ando a CAT scan in 07 showed a tiny amount of fluid on the top of my dome and it can effect act like a peusdo tumor they said.


And it's still there? Can't it be removed?

I am reading Lord of the Rings to my visually challenged friend. (posted about this earlier in the reading thread)

What follows will have basic spoilers for Lord of the Rings.




So my friend has been rather depressed ever since Moria and the fall of Gandalf. Several times he has shaken his head sadly and said "they don't have a chance without Gandalf". Me being a good non spoilery reader, always nodded solemnly and agreed that things looked dark.

Yesterday we read the chapter the white rider where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli meet Gandalf in Fangorn. When Aragorn exclaimed Gandalf the expression on my friends face was priceless.

Reading to him reminds me that the old tropes we jaded fantasy readers take for granted still have the power to bring joy and wonder to new readers.

So at the very least I'm going back to uni (IT/programming this time) in a week's time and possibly moving into an owned bigger 2-room flat with the gf (so it will actually be cheaper). So I've got that going for me, which is nice...

Docs think they've found the source of the migraines I've started having, and it's relatively easy to put right. Phew! Also, last day of work this week and very much needed. It's been an utter bitch.
