I watched the 2nd episode of Disenchanted, it's just not clicking with me.

Oh ... so much possible snark has gridlocked my brain. Snarklock?

Then again, that's not difficult to do.

I recall Tina Fey relating the tale of when Paris hosted SNL, and not only did she walk around like she owned the place and everyone, every skit, and everything was beneath her...but she apparently left nasty little clumps of blonde hair (extensions? Not?) everywhere and Tina said they'd blow by like tumbleweeds, and it was disgusting.

She was a waste of space and I'm glad she's out of the spotlight now....but she did make way/give way to the next bunch of vapid morons the tabloids follow, the Kardashians...so her affect on popular culture consumption is still being felt.

People blame the Osbournes for the Paris, Kardashian progression to stupid celebrity television inanity. Ozzy and family might have something to do with it, but I put more significance on the celebrity sex tapes that came out. I don't think anyone would know who either Paris Hilton or the Kardashian's were without the sex tapes.

Particularly considering Kim K was Paris' assistant at one point.

If they weren't famous, there'd just be different people you disliked with reality shows. I mean, there already are. You might as well blame COPS, which is at least as voyeuristic, at least as exploitative, and at least as socially harmful as any of the socialite shows. Not to let wealth obsession and materialism off the hook, or even these individuals and their notably awful behavior, but these shows are symptoms not root causes.

Anyway, The Simple Life debuted before the leak of Paris Hilton's sex tape. The latter was taking advantage of the former. And it's probably worth noting that in both cases -- and like the Pamela Anderson/Tommy Lee tape -- these private videos were leaked without their consent, and the women in them reacted to that invasion of privacy. The people who released the tapes in the first place are monsters, and it was no different and no better than the 'Fappening'.
I also kind of think that 'vapidity' that codes as feminine gets a lot more flack than vapidity that codes as masculine. Like, Tommy Rob--I mean Jeremy Clarkson is just as self-important, stupid, vapid, mean-spirited, etc. as others in the reality-entertainment industry, but the fact that Paris Hilton appeared on his show tarnishes it while the fact that it's his show doesn't?
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

not really, I wouldn't class top gear or the grand tour as "reality TV", and Hilton and her ilk have contributed to the whole twitter obsessed narcissistic instagram generation than Clarkson could ever hope to.

Show about various celebrity/fame whore wannabees trying to make it in Hollywood. A camera follows them as they pursue their dreams. Paris has commentary throughout, saying she is a trailblazer and icon in branding, fashion, business acumen, EDM DJing, social media prowess. And how she has avoided the pitfalls some of these subjects seem to be falling into. How she stays focused and surrounds herself with the right people and has captured the Hollywood dream that eludes most everyone who chases it, including these dummies.

By the way, first reality show was out in the 70s. I'm sure you can find it by googling. Then maybe cops, but cops wasn't following people around living normal lives. Then MTVs Real World after that I suppose.

I really like Firefly so far.

And I absolutely adore the title track music.

And X Files is surprisingly good.

I'm watching Can't Cope Won't Cope, and it's fascinating hearing Irish people say "like" as much as Americans do, but uniformly putting it at the end of sentences. What an oddball linguistic tic!

That's a tic of Scouse (Liverpool) too. One of my oldest friends is from there, and I torment him mercilessly for it!

Don't want to wade too deep in these waters but I disagree. Clarkson is often funny, witty and engaging. Is he self righteous, a prick, offensive? Yes, and also a lot worse. However the man is fun.

Now I don't know Paris very well. I watched half an episode of the simple life and realized Id rather do anything else. However Id argue that she is vapid. Now she cant be all stupid, She makes millions. Help from the family name or no. That said id argue its part of her persona to be a ditzy blonde that is vapid. Based on what I recal seeing. The only thing worse than being vapid is pretending it. She is not vapid because she enjoys fashion over cars, she literally had a show where she pretended to not know what work is.
