I have to agree with Cause. Clarkson is most of the things you both mention - but vapid isn't among them. He isn't getting a laugh out of being thick and not having a clue what's going on - usually quite the opposite. Sure, the antics on the show are farcical (and I'm not suggesting all the humour is always that great) but it's not getting a laugh out of a persona of being short of brain cells. There's a brain under there, whatever we may think of how he chooses to use it.

Paris Hilton and her ilk however do seem to trade on at least the idea that they are terminally stupid - that seems to be the entirety of their brand. I'm not sure what the media is like elsewhere in the world, but in the UK we definitely seem to go through phases of holding being stupid up as something to aspire to (the ones that spring to mind are Jade Goody from Big Brother and some seemingly harmless but utterly stupid man from The Only Way is Essex - Joey Essex?) which is why I can't stand the sort of stuff that bred that tendency.

I'm watching Can't Cope Won't Cope, and it's fascinating hearing Irish people say "like" as much as Americans do, but uniformly putting it at the end of sentences. What an oddball linguistic tic!

That's a tic of Scouse (Liverpool) too. One of my oldest friends is from there, and I torment him mercilessly for it!

Liverpool and Dublin are horrendously closely linked in terms of speech, and attitude towards life.

That's pretty rad. More shows should be set there.

Is that why you, an Irishman, support Liverpool? The kindred chavvy criminality? 😉

Started Amazon's JACK RYAN series last night. SOLID pilot episode. Sets up Krasinski as Ryan and the other characters well, but the main glut of deeper character study focuses on what I assume is the antagonist, and oh boy is it well done!

Wife and I will be bingeing the whole season over the next little while, will let you al know what we think by the end. Great start though!

More questions from the guy who never watches anything (or watches them hopelessly late)
Are the Marvel shows - Jessica Jones, Luke Cage worth watching? What are they like? Daredevil?

Are the DC shows worth watching? Supergirl? Green Arrow?
I saw 2 seasons of Buffy and while I liked it, I have not been compelled to watch the rest of it.

I like the Marvel shows more than the board average, and think they're all worth watching (even Iron Fist). But many on the board find them boring. They're generally season-long arcs, not villain of the week stories like the DC shows presumably are, and some of them do strain a little at 13 episodes per season as a result. Plus the Hand (who are like a cross-show Phase 1 adversary) aren't that exciting. Villains outside of the Hand tend to be great though imo.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I personally really loved Jessica Jones and Daredevil - Defenders was alright too, but I hadn't watched Luke Cage or Iron Fist (which I don't intend to watch) so I may have gotten more out of it had I done so.

They're slow burners though as Worry says, but I feel they're worth sticking with.

Ugh I've completely given up on them. DD S1 was pretty good. JJ S1 was OK but that was mainly cos David Tenant is ace. JJ herself is just whiny. LC S1 was really good until about halfway through. Then it took a dive in quality. IF S1 was terrible but I made it through DD S2 was still ok but that was mainly due to The Punisher being in it. Defenders was abjectly terrible and I didn't finish it.

None of them were superb. Don't mind a slow burn at all but they just drag on the whole. Too many other good shows to watch to bother any further.

Friend and I once said they'd all be improved by condensing down by three or four episodes - JJ in particular could probably benefit from that.
