And guess what (in answer to that quote from vengy)? later rake ponders the message "of a foul mage he'd thought a hundred/thousand (dunno which, check someone) leagues away, courtesy of Serrat." I wonder.... is 100/1000 leagues away counted as from Genebackis to Bael?

Finally we get to meet Greymane the last of the great commanders of the Malazan Imperial forces, after reading that chapter, I liked the way ICE described him carrying a slim long sword - as he's considered by Caladan Brood as one of the great sowrdsmen mentioned in the same breath as Dassem Ultor Segulah first and Rake when berating kallor in MOI.

Comes across IMHO very simlar to Dessam - a great warrior who leads from the front and doesn't say much. Love the interplay between he and Cowl.

Anyone find it intresting that Cowl has his own version of the Claw and the Talons, never realised that he was an assassin mage, mind you though it was pretty obvious in retrospect when I think of the way he dealt with Serrat in GOTM.

Man that was awesome.

About how some have commented how ICE's style is "like" SE's....I don't think they are trying to write alike at all. I think ICE's writing is very different, yet equally as well written. I love how they don't sound the same.

A few thoughts...

1. I don't think the Serc Ascendant is Osseric. It could be a stocky Liosan, somewhat insane mage though?

2. Greymane IS AWESOME. He is living up the hype so far....and is he near Ascension?

3. I love the underlaying currents of tension throughout the Guard....this book is going to OWN.

Very interesting... His style is different from SE's, and feels a little staccato at times, but it pulled me in nonetheless. (Except for the names - having such non-MBotF names as Kyle and Ogilvy in there was pretty jarring to me.) I'm definitely going to want to read it.

The "wind spirit" didn't seem like Osserc to me. (Liosserical did, though.) Maybe one of the minor cards in High House Light/Sky?

So, Greyman can bend Iron Bars, can he? :D

Is Greymane the Grey Incredible Hulk in disguise?!?!?!

Kyle is a weird choice, but the name doesn't bug me enough to throw me off.

ICE seems to describe his characters a little more.

Did anyone else raise their eyebrows during the part when Greymane smacked icicles off his armor? For a second he seemed like a storm rider, call me crazy.

The warren of serc is the path of the Sky. It seems to be able to create weather, so dropping the temperature shouldn't be too much of a stretch.

Apt, wonders if Osserc really CAN fart rainbows....

"As Greymane emerged from the curtain of rain Kyle saw that a layer of ice covered the man’s armor – icicles hung from the skirts of his hanging scaled armor. The Malazan renegade slapped at the ice, sending shards tinkling to the stone floor. Vapor curled from him like smoke. To Kyle’s astonishment, no one commented upon this."

It seems logical that he was the only one with a layer of ice on his armor. But the last line: 'To Kyle’s astonishment, no one commented upon this,' is sound evidence from ICE that it was important. And why would Vapor curl from him like smoke. Thats seems kind of unusal if it was just a temerature drop. Why would vapor curl from him like smoke. THat's not jsut some vapor, that implies alot. And I also remember a similar image about stormriders in the begining of NoK, but I'll have to check that later. It may be nothing, it may just be an allusion to his past, or it could be an important hint about Greymanes connection to the stormriders. He was a commander on the wall wasn't he?

Maybe Greymane's warren (if he has one) is some sort of derivitive of Omtose Phelleck

I don't understand why this is such a problem. Serc is the skywarren. Creating ice shouldn't be such a problem for someone using it. Either shenk managed a last assault that Greymane took the force of or Greymane triggered a ward and took the force of that one.

I don't know if ice leaves vapor in a much hotter invironment but it could just be a case of the armor heating up at the impact of the magic and the ice layer on the armor reacting to the heat.

If it heats up quickly, ice would sublime at the same time that it melted (ie produce vapour) but it would hurt if that happened to your armour!!

Which is probably why Kyle is suprised no one commented.

he probably likes it--it's like a hot tub inside your own armor..

And yeah, no need for a "Path of Ice". Serc is wind. Wind can be cold. Cold can freeze.

Aye, movement of air can take heat with it very easily. And it's probably fair to assume if it's a powerful ascendant, or even an "elemental", it's fairly adept;)

Why do you tread on my dreams? Why!?

LoL. I like the way Cowl is how an "assassin mage" should be. To be honest, the Claw seem like watered down pawns most of the time and half of them are barely competant with magic. I think they should be Mages first, then be assassins. Rather than the emphasis reversed.

I'm probably reading too much into this, but my gut is telling me that Greymane is somehow affiliated with T'lan Imass.

- called "Stonewielder", described as hulking and wide
- mysterious disappearing two-handed sword (doesn't say what it's made of) sort of put me in mind of the Imass turn to dust trick, though it could be just some magic up his sleeve.
- the dessicated "revenant" (dead guardian Oglivy said he had heard of) found on the stairs made me think of undead warriors
- the whole "shaking off the ice" scene, which I would imagine that TI probably had to do all the time, during the Jaghut wars

Can you catch like a half-dose of the Ritual, be a living Imass with benefits? :p

Like I said, all speculation

Yeah, you're definently stretching things to make them fit your theory.

I might aswell say he's a Jaghut.
- hulking and wide
- Immune to cold and the effects of a storm.
- Can make things appear and disappear, like that Jaghut in HoC.
- Doesn't like T'lan Imass, probably killed the Revenant.
- Is a sour puss.

In reality all the "mysterious" things we see through Kyles eyes can easily be explained away by the scout being wide eyed stupid.

The Sword didn't disappear. He probably had one of the other CriGs carry it, after he switched to close combat weaponry. Kyle didn't see the switch. He was just fixated on the swords awesomery.

Imass are short, not big. Big and wide means nothing. How many heavies do you think the CriG have?

Shaking off magic can be related to many things. Maybe he carries charms or his armor is blessed. Perhaps he's annointed by a warren. Perhaps he's just badass, think of Temper or Stony.

The whole superstrength and stoneweilder name, has me thinking he's connected to Obelisk. Like how it gave Toc the exploding arrows. Perhaps there's much more to it that Toc never wished to know.
