After reading the prologue first and then this chapter I find myself questioning whether it was really Osseric in the prologue....Might it not be possible that like Rake he has a brother who has slept....
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.
Hinter - Vengy - DIE. I trusted you you bastard!!!!!!!

Very Handsome
"I think i was a bad person before. Before this time. I do not try to be good now but i am not bad. Perhaps if i try harder i may get a better hand dealt next time? But surely that makes it pointless? Perhaps i am good. Just good at being pointless. But that would make me bad. Bad at having a point. Ah…. I see now. I was nothing before, I am nothing now. I am bad purely because im pointless. "

Soo.. that Master of Serc - Osserc?
I don't think so - more likely an Ascnedent aspected to Serc, long bound and used by Shen before the CGrd showed up.
The thing with Kyle's sword seems to support his suggestion of an ancestral connection.
On another note, Cowl and two sidekick 'Veils'... Claw or Talon equivalents? renegades? defectors?
- Abyss, could say that Cowl broke wind...

Not unthinkable, but on the other hand, Rake has a few names - Anomandaris, Anomander, Mandy... Liossercal as an earlier/younger, more savage Osserc doesn't seem unlikely.
- Abyss, 'byss' to my friends...

I fall asleep for three hours and this turns up. I'm happy but conducting serious questioning as to why this happened
I think it has something to do with exhaustion and the need of sleep personally.

Clearly your priorities are thoroughly out of whack. I recommend a re-read.

I reckon both Liossercal and the 'magus' are Osserc. Wasn't it mentioned several times by characters in Erikson's books that Osserc was now 'lost?' And didn't L'oric find him in a dreamworld of the past? That relates nicely to this ascendant being asleep and dreaming in this chapter. Plus the whole 'Master of Serc' thing, it's been quite heavily alluded to in past books that Osserc and the Warren of Serc are connected.

So if the Magus is not dead, he is injured and recovering in Kyle's sword perhaps, rather than just a blessing?
Osserc and Serc name connection, Champion of Light and Path of Sky, does Father Wind equal Father Light, or is Sky the offspring of Light, maybe?
Possibly Greymane's sword changes size when unsheathed?

I don't think either Erikson or Esslemont would be so blunt as to reveal Osserc in the very first chapter and then off him with out a suitable sending off...
I know that most things in the Malazan universe seems to be connected, but it's not an unreasonable suggestion that more than one ascendant could be able to command the wind.
I think the ascendant really died, I have confidence in Cowls abilities, but a lot of his power maybe even the soul was transfered into Kyles blade.

Fantastic, I was gripped in a way that only the Malazan world can do to me!!! I have to say the style of writting from ICE seams to have matured, he captured the atmosphere and emotions much clearer whilst still making the story progress at a sensible pace.
Bring on the rest!!! I can't wait

Stoop points West towards the Malazans... allowing him a degree of vagueness/inaccuracy, i suppose that would imply this is happening in Korelri, Stratem, Jacruku, or Assail (or a random island in the Traveller's Ocean). Can't be Genebackis as Kyle notes that that campaign is over and it certainly seems like he's never been there.

So, is the 'magus' indeed Osserc as suggested by some of you, for example Khellendros?
First of all, I believe the Liossercal is the one we already know as Osserc. Being a Soletaken Eleint and being connected to the light is, in my opinion, proof enough.
However, I am not convinced, that the formerly sleeping 'magus' is Osserc. Mostly because Osserc was never before described having blue tatoos on his arms.
On the other hand, the description of his appearance and his obvious arrogance point towards Osserc:
But then maybe he is just another Tiste Liosan. Who knows.

Quote
His hair was thick, bone-white, and braided – and lay completely unmoved by the wind. His complexion was as pale as snow.
Quote
The magus – and Kyle held little doubt the being was at least that – watched the little man with apparent amusement. -...- The magus watched all this with a kind of patient curiosity.
But then maybe he is just another Tiste Liosan. Who knows.

Kellendros' theory is based on the hearsay that Osserc has been "lost"
While it's true that he's taken off from Kurald Liosan, I'm fairly certain that his travel to the Raraku's memory warren was voluntary.
Kyle refers to "Father Wind", who was supposedly one of the founders of his people .
If that is so, that'd mean Kyle's ancestors were descendants of the Liosan, and nothing about him indicates that.
I'd much rather this be yet another new player that we haven't heard of yet.
Liossercal, on the other hand, does sound an awful lot like Osserc.

Well Osserc is living in a memory-warren in 7C when we see him in HoC. While he could have gotten there only recently as of HoC, I don't think so. First of all, Osserc does exude long-term patience and he implies he has been observing the proceedings in the memory-warren for some time. Him being in this memory-warren is known by many. Though I'm sure the Queen of Dreams stays very up-to-date, I would think that Monok Ochem knowing of Osserc's disappearance implies he has been 'lost' for a significant amount of time.
Plus, Osserc doesn't have enormous tusked canine teeth jutting from his mouth.

That is something that bothers me, too. But then, at that time, maybe the Jaghut still were the dominant species and he just elected this appearance not to draw too much attention to himself. After all, his son, L'Oric also chose not to appear as Liosan but as a human at the time of the Apocalypse in Raraku.
Just another thought: In all probability, Osserc had the occasional visit at the dentists once in a while. Maybe he had the tusks removed as some sort of beauty-job.

Well, the other theory, would mean that Liossercal had to have partaken of Tiam's bllod at some point. Now, my recollection of MT is somewhat fuzzy, but I don't recall Liossercal being named among the Soletaken Eleint...
