I can see your point. What's more important to me though, is which author make me actually want to read about their world more. To me, the answer is SE. Or GRRM. Or Bakker, Lynch Tolkein Donaldson King Salvatore...on so on. It's all a matter of opinion though. If RJ does it for you, more power to you.

After what I've seen in the Wikipedia article about WoT I browsed, those books suffer from some pretty cheesy covers as well.
Oh yeah, some of them were horrible, to the point of costing SE readers because people would refuse to even pick them up. That's a bad cover.

DK Sweet's covers have caused millions of WoT fans so much pain, you wouldn't believe. I have no idea how he managed to keep getting paid to make more covers for the series.

I believe he was under contract.
I do recall that PNH semi-apologized to us fans online (rasfwrj) once about it ...

The Gardens of the Moon version with the girl in decolletéd mail that would get her killed the first seconds in a battle? I'm so glad I got the one with Whiskeyjack (if it's supposed to be him) only.

Is that the guy responsible for the Fabio-Rand cover on one of the books? That one looks like some pseudo-historical Mills and Boon or Harlequin romance.

Couldn't they have contracted Michael Whelan?

It's a form of psychological warfare, with many dimensions. Although I imagine it would be more effect as such if it'd been done by a big fat hairy man!

The crazy thing is, that was one of the better covers... I mean, he got two characters right, and the setting wasn't entirely made up.

I got the same one. It's better without the girl, but still not up to the standard set by the book itself.

I'm just referring to the way Jordan could give answers he was certain of, more or less (when he didn't tell us to RAFO), while Erikson is much more inclined to go, "Hmmm, I guess, now that I think about it, it must be something like..."
I disagree (which means I agree with RLY - shocking isn't).
Sure, RJ has alot thought out, but I like the genius mystery about SE's world.
SE, I am sure of it, has thought out alot more than he lets on, he just don't go blabbering about it. I think he's making a joke out of us all at times. Which is way more interesting than any revealed plot lines.

I see, it's like the descriptions Tacitus gives of Germanic women cheering their men on by baring their boobs. It turned into a cliche that found its way into a chronicle written at the time of Charlemagne where the Saxon women are ascribed the same tactics.
But neither the Romans or the Franks got distracted by it, it seems.

So Rand is a hottie running around in an open shirt?

Yes you should (writing what??), and I should be in bed, dreaming of getting a watertight unbreakable contract to design the covers for all the Malazan books.

I'm working on the next great epic Fantasy
and a historical fiction series.
Is there a thread in the Writing forum where members can present their projects in a few sentences? I don't want to hijack this one.

My own appreciation of the books was very much enhanced by the WoT book-forum, btw. I never liked the other WoT-sites, but the discussions on my "home" forum made the world of WoT come alive to me in a way that no other series has since.
I agree. I had read WoT about four times when I first joined Theoryland, and after a brief time there, I realized I had missed A LOT. From that point on, every day my appreciation for the series grew, and every read of the series is better than the last one.
All this yammering about skirt-smoothing and braid-tugging...might as well bitch about Erikson's characters being drunk all the time. It's just inconsequential, and something to bitch about for some vague reason that no one is ever quite able to explain properly...

Damn this clothes discussion.
An hour or so ago someone - a man, in fact - on the Writers' Forum in which I participate posted a fun question: if your characters were invited to Ascot, what would they wear? And of course, I couldn't resist to invent a tournament, Ascot not being around yet, and think about the dresses of my female characters for the first time ever.
Took me an hour to write a post for the thread. But now they all have pretty clothes.
