How do you think Raest versus Rake would have gone, if Raest had got to his Finnest and had not been attacked by anyone else (Silannh + dragons, Tool, Paren, moranth explosives)
How far would the battle have gone and would the city be destroyed?
I'd say that Raest would have pushed Rake much harder than the demon did, but he would have been defeated by Rake in the end regardless. Rake would be heavily wounded afterwards.

Well that's a good one, but I bet on Rake, a long battle, but he would win...After all, he killed Drakonas....

I'd say Rake, but he would be very badly hurt and possibly vulnerable to attack by a normally "lesser" power, such as marines, human mages, etc.

Rake himself explained that he could defeat Raest, but that it would be messy and leave him sorely diminished.

That is true.

Raest would have beaten the crap out of Rake...but in the end...there'd be Rake on one knee bleeding badly...and nobody else alive in a many many mile radius

This is a tough subject for me because I like to quantify things, the facts I pick up in the books I like to compare to diffent stories, etc. but that doesn't work with Erikson because he's most often going to do the completely unexpected just to mess with me.

A battle between Raest and Rake would depend of a lot of circumstances. Lots of spoilers coming up:

Rake.. no question about it.. Although I agree with my fellow Scandinavian freak, Apt.. them circumstances he took up there are more than valid to determine a result out of a potential clash between Rake and Raest.

I think it would have been a long and devastating battle but I think Rake would have won

Maybe they would've resolved their differences peacefully and ended up kissing passionately.....

Rake would've been left totally weakened by it, but he'd pull it out in the end. Maybe lose a finger or two :)

ha - I think its funny that EVERYONE pretty much puts the vote to Rake (me included). The only real question is how wounded would he be, and how many other people would die as a result!

There's said to be some kind of priestess living inside Moons Spawn. There's also Serrat, but she was pretty messed up after the Raest vs Dragon fight.

Well . . . the battles and fights in the first book were very abbreviated. It was pretty much release one volley of magic, ooh, I'm spent now. That is not the case for the rest of the books, written much latter than the first book.

Raest was immensely powerful even for Jaghut standards. But so is Rake. And Dragnipur has chanined deities, not just little wizards or Daleks. Once the sword impales you, it's pretty much over.
If there were no smart people others wouldn't feel inadequate.

Right?

Raest possessed Mammot once he was getting torn up though... can't remember why Mammot was vulnerable to this at the time - possibly he was searching mentally to see what was going on when Raest grabbed him.

Could Raest have done that again, into someone more powerful, if he hadn't been taken out with a cusser?

If so, then he could keep renewing himself, while Rake would get steadily weaker, which might have given him the advantage. Also, he could rip up mountains before he reached his Finnest... ;)
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

One single cut from Dragnipur would have ended the battle, so all Rake really needed to do was get close in dragon form, semble, and slice Raest... And then his soul is chained in Dragnipur forever, with no option of changing bodies.

Spoilsport!

Dragnipur would only work if Rake could get close enough to use it. Hurling up lava and rocks, and doing whatever tore up the dragons were all ranged attacks that could have been used on Rake. And a soul-jump if he got too close.

Hey, I love Raest, I got him on the quiz ;) But Rake has Dragnipur, which is like some kind of god-mode cheat really lol.

I would have enjoyed it if Raest had been strolling out of his little cave thing gone about 10 metres then BOOM!! hit by a big ass drum, instead of fid and hegde infiltrating Daru then they couldve been working on this for ages.
Not the most story-line aspected ending for Raest but fancy fireworks none the less.

I just blew your mind.
