What stuck in my head about the GSP performance against Koscheck was how he is perhaps the polar opposite of Machida strategy-wise and yet both accomplish the same goal: winning without taking much damage. Machida waits until he can counter an opponent's offense and crack open defenses before they slam into place; GSP prevents any offense from beginning by relentlessly imposing his strategy and offense upon the opponent.

The Pettis kick is amazing. That whole card was amazing. It's too bad the live broadcast didn't show any of the many very quick first round stoppages from the undercard. It was almost as if all of the fighters had a sense of urgency beyond anything I've seen before and most of them were able to deliver highlights after highlights. For sure a great show to watch.

I also really enjoy watching Cruz fight. He's apparently a real tough person to get along with, but his fighting style is so wacky and yet dominant, that I can't help but put him into "must watch" status.

WEC. It'll live on in our memories.

Damn, good fights from Strikeforce tonight... All the prelims were good as well as the main card.

I just can't stand Nick Diaz, such a fucking punk.... Too bad he didn't sign with the UFC so I can watch him get his ass beat....



Anyone know who he has yelling at after the finish? I hope it wasn't female cyborg, if so thats just pathetic. At if was funny fow diaz and that old guy looked pissed when someone fron cyborgs corner threw water on them after diaz yelled at them.

Roger had perfect technique. That was insanely nice.

Jacare, not as nice technique, but still very, very impressive.

Diaz/Cyborg round 1 is probably going to be the round of the year. I think the TD was a good decision, but the posture up a bad one. Should have ridden out the round there.

No idea who Diaz was yelling at. We'll find out later.

Man that would be pretty sweet- hope that comes through for you. Seeing Fedor fight live would be amazing.

Gettin' pretty juiced for the UFC 126 card tomorrow night. I'm hoping to see some fireworks from Silva-Belfort and I'm hoping they last at least a few rounds but it could be a 1st round KO. I'm pulling for Vitor and hope his hand speed has a shot against Silva but I think Silva will ge able to avoid Vitor's attack and counter-punch him into a KO. Either way I hope it's a good show. JJ-Bader should be good but I think JJ will dominate, Griffin-Franklin is interesting as they are 2 guys who are solid in all facets but don't excel in one area. Torres should have a great UFC debut. Pumped for the UFC Sat. night and Super Bowl Sunday combo- I took monday off to recover from the hangover.

Damn, what a crazy staredown between Silva and Belfort...... Silva just seems so god damn cocky and arrogant, I've been wanting to see him lose so bad during his last couple fights. I can't beleive I was even rooting for Sonnen, but he sure shit the bed in the last 2 minutes. Since it's almost certain that GSP and Silva will fight if they both win their next fights, I guess I will be barely hoping Silva wins this fight. I hope Vitor brings it to him tho.

Damn, what a great card tomorrow. Can't fucking wait!

That front kick Silva delivered was right out of movie. So succinctly effective. You rarely see something so beautiful and awesome . UFC, give us Silva vs. GSP!

Anderson sort of got lucky, but it's the kind of luck that those with genius create themselves and break open worlds with. That was ridiculous. Vitor started off exactly as he usually does and even looked like he had a great gameplan going in. But wow...

Franklin fought with no urgency. Griffin was probably 25 pounds heavier and managed to do just enough in the second round to take it. I called it 29-28 Griffin.

Banuelos needs to be cut. The dude can't mount any effective offense against anyone good in his division. He's tough, but has zero adaptability and runs away from his opponents constantly.

As for the Jones fight, I posted the following on the MMA/strongman/fitness board I hang out on:

Against Bonnar, he displayed beautiful form on his punches; now he has largely abandoned those tactics and looks to go for the unorthodox strikes first. They work for him sometimes, but an orthodox game supplemented with the crazy strikes would have him running through people on the feet.

I wondered out loud why Jones was abandoning the brabo/D'Arce. The long arms and set-up looked very good for the brabo choke's chances. He seemed to have a very likely sub there, but when he switched over to what I call the "Marcelo" guillotine, with the hand over the shoulder, I was impressed. The Marcelo guillotine is perhaps my favorite sub to hunt for, and you see him hit it from quite a few angles as both a sub and as a sweep/space opener. In MMA, CB Dollaway recently employed it to great effect against Joe Doerkson.

This particular guillotine variation feels horrifically bad to the person in the choke - way worse than a standard guillotine - and I'm not surprised Bader tapped to that. Jones did modify it slightly for whatever reasons (maybe he didn't quite understand the choke or maybe he thought he needed to change things slightly), and he shifted his outside arm to something very much like the McKenzietine/Deadliest Catch prayer choke. Jones used that outside arm to push the inside hand/wrist further up and that probably intensified the awful feelings Bader was experiencing. The awful feelings aside, Bader was going to sleep soon and Jones

Jones nearly had the North-South/Monson choke earlier on, but he wasn't quite able to execute it correctly. He had to drop his lat a bit further down to the ground to get the tap - I thought he was going to get it at first and was yelling "Oh shit! Bader's going to tap!"

All in all, Jones is working a good sub game, but you can tell that he's still raw and not in command of the fine details of the grappling game yet (neither am I, but I have the benefits of being an observer).

The step-over to take the back was pure whimsy and wasn't followed by any hand movement designed to take advantage of the back or Bader's rising up from it. It was flash without substance. I'm more impressed by his usage of the neck based subs - which are a great place to start getting good at the ground game. But he's still learning that ground game and his striking proficiency has seemingly disappeared.

I'm of the opinion that Shogun breaks him. We may never see the Shogun that destroyed Arona in less than three minutes again, but he has the knowledge, the fearlessness and the skills to crack Jones apart in nearly every facet of the game.

I also think that Rua moves very quickly in and out, launches offense while moving back well and Jones's footwork is very much a work in progress at this point. He only has 40ish days to buff out minor flaws and work on implementing his gameplan - as that's not enough time to continue fixing footwork or improving technique elsewhere. I seriously view Shogun as a +200 favorite here.
