not education only. i think being religious is like winning the lottery - it's pure random chance. depending on where you are born and who you are born to, and how generally subborn you are.

Yeah culture has a lot to do with it. I'm Orthodox Christian but I don't limit myself to the dogma. In fact I don't believe there's much of a dogma in Orthodox Christianity at all. It's more of a guideline for a healthier more balanced life.

That having been said I haven't set foot in a church for nine years. I'm not the type to talk to God seen as how he's bound to hear my every word anyways and there isn't really much to say to someone who knows you that good. I sometimes smile when I remember about Him and that about sums up our relationship.

Revelations 10:22:08:

And Lo! There did come the Terez. And she was angry. Having been brought up religous and now being bitter, her judgement was colored by her angst and anger. Possibly other psychological problems. Across the sky flew the Gem, high as the moon, telling bewitching stories about personal beliefs and wanting to live her life in peace with her beliefs. The one named Bubba looked upon this and saw that it was good, and so having already embraced it voices his opinion. The Terez, while on her crusade, saw these believers attempting to live their lives in peace and could not stand such a thing, so she attacked with spears of words and arrows of contempt. The believers, being firm in their belief, did not flinch upon the onslaught, and attempted to convey the fact that they did not care what Terez though or believed, as long as she did not attempt to force it upon them. The crusader could not abondon her crusade, and so brought more and more slings and barbs against them, attempting to wound them and convert them, at the same time.

This is the general story of all the religious threads on this forum for the past couple months. Do we need to rehash this same stuff in every single thread, every single time?

Terez, you make me laugh since you are telling other people to butt out when they attempt to make their opinion known. Take your own advice?

I was raised a Christian, but these days I'd definitely consider myself an Agnostic; the Wikipedia definition certainly hits the nail on the head so far as my own thoughts and feelings on the matter are concerned: http://en.wikipedia....iki/Agnosticism.

Guess we'll all find out when the time comes anyway...

By the way, I told people that they could feel free to butt out because they said they did not see any point in discussing religion. I don't see what's so difficult to understand about that. I'm hardly on a crusade - I enjoy discussing religion, but I don't get people who seem to think that it's somehow wrong to question people's beliefs. So could someone explain to me why they think I'm on a crusade?

Because, Terez, there are many different threads about discussion religion, this thead is asking you what your religious beliefs are, and any explanations if you have them.

And then here you come, on your angry horse to tell people how wrong and stupid they are for believing in religion.

If noone is trying to convert anyone, why can't there just be one single thread where people say what their views are, so we can see where everyone stands?

You claim you are not on a crusade, but you come charging in everywhere attempting to make people change what they think/believe in, even in a thread that dosen't call for it, at all.

Funnily enough there seems to be a crusade against Terez going on as well ;) , but she seems to be taking it in her stride, well at least her horses canter anyway. Pretty much everyone has taken a chunk out of her recently and I don't think its all that great.

Not an attack on Terez at all. Just her posting style in this section of the forums.

Yeah, but she already 'got it' last week, and instead of letting her just get on with it for a while, the jibes don't stop. Anytime she pipes in, someone takes a swipe. Not exactly ideal. I might be wrong, but that's what I been seeing.

I entered this thread when Osric made, in addition to a statement about his own beliefs, a statement about his perceptions of what atheists believe. I'm an atheist, and I don't think he represented my beliefs or the beliefs of "most atheists" very well, so I posted to clarify on that point. Meanwhile Gem and Frookie were having a discussion about their beliefs, which I wasn't paying much attention to. Then Bubba posted some seriously overdramatic stuff. I don't understand the need for all that drama - a simple request for Gem and Frookie to start a new thread for their side discussion would have been appropriate.

Obdi said:

Where was I ever on an angry horse? Bubba posted to say that this was supposed to be a thread for talking about our beliefs, which is exactly what people were doing, and he acted as if we were doing something wrong by discussing them. So I said, fine, if you want to be that way, I think religion is dumb. That's about as simply as I can put it, but I generally try to avoid being so simplistic when discussing my beliefs, because they're a bit more complex than all that. ;)

Anyway, obviously (for anyone that's really giving any credence to anything that I write) I regretted being so flippant about it, in response to Bubba's drama post, so I made my next post to clarify why I felt like it was needless drama. Up until that point I had only been involved in the thread to the extent that was originally intended (as per stating what your beliefs are and explaining if necessary).

So, as Bubba has pointed out elsewhere, he and I have always been friendly and I don't see any reason why he would assume that we are not just because I believe religion is dumb, or that I don't have any respect for him. I respect him, and I respect his right to believe whatever the hell he wants to - I just don't feel like I should abstain from discussing religion because there are people on the forum who are religious and might get offended. I don't get offended when people say things I don't agree with - I just argue with them. I only get offended when people attack me personally.

So to make this clear, in my post, I clarified (again - I've done it before) that I do not believe that religious people are stupid. I believe that religion is a human stupidity, but there are lots of those. But I don't dismiss people because they are religious. I have friends that are religious, and family that is religious. None of my friends are stupid (I don't like stupid people) and only some of my religious family members are stupid.

Obdi said:

There is - this one. There wasn't anything wrong with this thread until the drama entered into it, with the possible exception of Gem and Frookie's discussion. For that, a polite request that they start a new thread would have been much more appropriate than the drama we got instead. After that point, there was a another nice discussion between me and Osric and Silencer that lasted for a bit, and then Bubba got dramatic about it again, saying that we were "spamming" the thread when all we were doing was having a discussion.

Obdi said:

Where? Certainly not here. I usually don't make any attempt to change what people believe - their beliefs only affect me in certain situations, and my arguments are almost always about those situations (usually having to do with science or law or the insistence that everyone has a right to not be offended).

The only reason I continue to discuss this is because, 15 days after the last time I posted in this thread, you showed up to make another personal attack on me. Now, who is on a crusade? Who is spamming the thread?

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, you and I can be friends. I thought we were friendly before this recent drama. If you're my friend, then you can speak up when I say something that pisses you off, and I'll listen, but you're not making much progress with posts like these. It could be that you don't give a shit, and that's fine too, but really....15 days after the last time I posted?

Well I'm a christian through and through. But I like to see myself as a worldly christian. It makes me mad how christians always criticize anything they think is evil (Harry Potter, and many other fantasy books and movies). It has really given the world the wrong opinion as us as a religion (even though I hate that fucking word :)).

I don't go to church (I think it is a big scam for people who like performing to show off) I much prefer spending time with friends and getting my community that way, we talk about god and have fun (something I have never experienced in church).

I'm a big believer in faith without seeing. I really have a close relation ship with Jesus/God. Has anyone read The Shack because that was one of the best portrayals of god I have ever seen. Definitely a must read if you are at all spiritual or searching for a greater purpose.

I also believe that God isn't picky. I believe Muslims believe in the same god that I do and loves everyone equally.
I have returned anew, wistfully my course holds true.

I am an atheist, mostly due to the fact that I think rationally and logically and simply do not beleive it is possible for a god of any kind to exsist, although I still love to read and write about god-like characters.

My thoughts exactly. Although I myself would be half Christian/half Agnostic, for no real reason other than that I'm young and have grown up amidst today's scepticism, the need for "rational proof" and the sometimes chronic religious apathy our generation seems to posess. Yet my mum is a Anglican priest - go figure lol. I don't deny God's existence, I am just hesitant about having a faith such as those prescribed by the Catholic Church, for instance. I believe faith is a wholly personal thing, and like Shadowthrone said, it is annoying to me when religious figures condemn and act the bigot about anything they perceive threatening to their own set of values - Pope Benedict's statement that "homosexuality is an even greater threat than climate change" (not verbatim, but I can't remember it off the top of my head) , is a good example. Also, the idea of God only absolving those who believe in Him is hard for me to accept. What about people who lived before the spread of Christianity? Virgil in The Divine Comedy, for instance, is unable to enter Heaven because he was a pagan, yet Christianity was unheard of in Italy during his lifetime iirc.

Anyway, I could ramble all day about all this, so I'll stop lol. Not a deliberate attack on Catholic values, by the way, so sorry if I offended.
