numbers of armies

did ne1 get the impressiion that in BH that armies just seemed to attach themsleves to the malazans in the most unlikely situaltions.
1. perish-some obscure region of a PACIFIED 7c that 13000 veterans just stroll out of.
2. mathk joining paran- so random. they have nothing left to fight for. surley mathok would attack paran in a last defence of 7c or somethng like that.
It seemed to me that erikson needed new characters and a few fresh armies to use just to get a few POVs. this mayb e my overcriticl eye however

With Mathok's people, they've just had their cause smashed by Tavore and subverted by the CG. They have no homes to go to, no families/cities beyond their forces, thanks to the plague. They're a warrior people with no-one left to fight and nowhere to go except the rotten corpse-strewn villages they left. It's the same principle as bribing the young warriors of a tribe away to fight as a unit somewhere else that Leoman went into in DG.
Plus, Paran killed a freaking GOD. The same one that destroyed their home. So why not? With a power and purpose like that, why not get their new purpose from him?
I agree with the Perish though, it is a bit "Reinforcements are onroute!"-ish.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

They're probably gonna get more though. The Bluerose Tiste Andii and some of Lether's continental neighbours like Kolanse are probably gonna team up with the 14th to take down the Edur. Otherwise the 14th is outnumbered like 20 to 1.

I do wonder how loyal the Letheri are going to be too. If you think about it, the Edur on their own could get a little crushed. Hmm. Of course, for all we know there is more than just the Tiste Edur...

Did the Malazan's ever pacify the perish part of the continent? I got the impression they had never been there before

i dont know exactly, i rushed that bit, i wanted to get to the end...
but given the fact that the appearance of the grey shields were a pretty surprise for nearly every1 i would assume that the malazans had never much to do with this part of the continent (dont think they were more west than the jhag odan)

I also thought that both alliances were very odd. They didn't seem to make sense, especailly Mathok's. I had thought they would either wander off back to their tribes, or carry on harassing malazan armies from a distance. To be dis-illusioned within five minutes of talking to Felisin Younger seemed a bit of a contrived plot device. Especially with the CG's so far very good record with recruiting armies to his cause.

I think with Mathok people underestimate how much the Sha'ik Rebellion was held together by a very very thin weave. It was essentially being carried on a tide, when Sha'ik and then Leoman are gone... well, I don't think ACTUAL, REAL, feelings of 7C people are that much against Malazans. Probably true also for many of the soldiers and their commanders like Mathok - they're there for the fighting, and if they get now a chance to fight under Paran, well, as shown - they take it.

Well, Sha'ik and Dryjina(sp?) are dead, so why would they harass the Malazans? And if the CG wanted them, then he would have made Felisin Younger keep them instead of trying to disarm them. Plus, wander off back to what tribes? Pretty much everyone they knew are dead - all central 7C tribesmen, where the plague hit hardest. Where would they go, that has as much chance of an honourable fight?

Also mathok has lost faith in what has happened with the rebirth oif the apocalypse so terrible in his eyes he may have needed a change, aslo 7c is in very bad shape with the plague and very little people left no one to grow food, as laseen says later on.

Mathok has seen the Apocalypse betrayed twice; by Leoman slaughtering his own troops when they'd already lost and traduced (or so he thought) by Felisin Younger's antics(Sha'ik re-re-born, who's in the midst of actually betraying the CG plans it seems)
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. I think Togg and Fanderay are choosing sides in the war between the gods. They're joining their army with the 14th's to fight the Edur.
Question though, how large of an army can the Edur field, with and without the Letherii army? I haven't re-read in awhile.

Edur numbers were 420,000 edur before the invasion 1/2 would be woman maybe 1/20 children (that small due to long lives).

i think it was more than that. also the woman count as combatants as almost half of them are mages. just an estimate but they all seem to have some sort of mage capbility.

The 420000 figure looks like it refers to the total number of Edur.

And somewhere it says a 100.000 warriors, blooded and unblooded.
