Currently still in Alex Verus 6 HIDDEN,....

Hey, this series really does get better as it proceeds. Wrapped 5 (not 6) HIDDEN, straight into 6, VEILED. All good.

...And i do so love the trope where the reader meets a crew of hardass warriors and you know, you just know, most of them are dead meat and the only question is how they go. The action in this book so far has been exceptionally entertaining so i'm looking fwd to the slaughter...

Islington's The Shadow Of What Was Lost while I wait for Red Queen's War book 2 to arrive.

EDIT: I can't pinpoint exactly why, but I'm getting real WoT vibes from this (only 15 pages in). Good vibes (though I haven't read any WoT in like 15+ years).

This is so good! Constant "oh wow!"s and "no way!"s.

Oh boy, if you like the first book, you're going to LOVE the second. Such a great series. Very WOT-like but without the extra fluff. Ilsington does a great job at subverting expectations and replacing them with even more complex and interesting revelations.

Good to know! The pacing of book 1 is great so far — definitely no fluff.

I want to start An Echo of Things to Come soon, but the new Lightbringer book just came out and I don't have time...maybe I'll add both into my rotation.

If it helps, ECHO ends on a kind of cliffhanger or two...so if you wait till after Xmas, then THE LIGHT OF ALL THAT FALLS will be out (Dec. 10th I believe), and you can crash through books 2 and 3 together.

Just finished reading a book called "Cloud of Sparrows" by Takashi Matsuoka. Pretty great story of American missionaries in Japan towards the end of the samurai era when guns were becoming more widely used. Fascinating plot with likeable characters. And ninjas.

Finished up Jack Vance's DYING EARTH series last week, very creative and great world-building, but I couldn't help but wish for something a little longer, more connected, and more novel-like to sink my teeth into. So I started Gene Wolfe's BOOK OF THE NEW SUN and finished up Book 1 pretty quickly. I love it. Getting some Malazan-vibes in terms of no hand-holding and treating the reader like an adult.

A nice breath of fresh air from WHEEL OF TIME - I'm on book 7, it's still mediocre.

For my Halloween read, I've started Caitlín R. Kiernan's Silk, which I finally found a couple of weeks ago after picking up its sequel on the clearance rack 6 years ago. About 80 pages in and still waiting for the plot to show up, but Kiernan's writing is so good I'm not bothered.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Finished The Ember Blade last night. It has the making of a solid fantasy series.

Starting Warriors of the Altaii by the late Robert Jordan. It has the feel of proto-Randland mixed with Conan so far.

TBF, it sounds like he's discovered this on his own and just wants confirmation?

Started reading SENLIN ASCENDS for the reading group. Seems quite fun so far even if the protagonist seems rubbish (I feel like that's the point and half the story is going to be his redemption/ascendancy ;))

Mix in a little John Norman's Gor series as well.

Background on the book from the intro:
Jordan wrote Warriors of the Altaii before his Conan and Wheel of Time books. It was picked up by 2 separate publishers but never released. They dusted it off finally and published it earlier this month. It's about 350 pages. Written in the first person, it is about a Barbarian named Wulfgar.

He gets... very not rubbish, but it takes the Tower and its inhabitants to push him into doing it.

I quite love the series for its almost steampunk Douglas Adams with a better through story nature.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.
