I’ve been thinking on this because I don’t think that I answer the phone like normal people anymore. Saying just “hello” feels funny. I’ve been on call for so many years that my normal greeting is “This is blabla”. Is that odd? Has phone etiquette changed?

Depends what phone I'm answering.

Mobile = "Hello" if unknown, and "Hi (name)" if I do. Very exciting. I don't like to give my name in case it's scammers.
Work = "Hello (title)" or just "Hello" if unknown ie external number.

The only people who regularly call me now a days is scammers and sales people.

When I’m expecting a professional related call and it’s an unknown number I say ‘Hi, this is cause’. I feel like it’s friendly and also lets us get to the point right away.

Hello, this is Slow Ben. On the business phone or an unknown number.

Yo! If it’s one of my friends.

Hey “persons name” if it’s an acquaintance.

Yolo! If it’s my wife, cause she thinks it’s stupid.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

People still answer the phone? 🤣

I don't answer to numbers I don't know. I can't be arsed.

I don't get work calls. Everything is pre-arranged teleconference or someone direct dialling through MS Teams after dropping me a note they are about to.

Too many instant messaging options.

Yo!

I've been told that this is apparently my signature phone call reply at work (working from home most of the time). It wasn't conscious until that point, but it is now whenever someone from I know calls just for the giggles. Otherwise it's "Hello, this is [my last name] from [company]." That said, I hate phone calls and am not ashamed to say I let it ring until someone else picks up. Not my freaking job.

Otherwise it's just a boring "Hello" but I change up the tone depending on whether I know who's calling or not.

I wish I didn’t get phone calls, but it’s the nature of the type of work I do to have to get called into a crisis in the middle of the night.

Reluctantly.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

I am with Mezla on this one. Don't know the number, don't pick up. Tired of all the Chinese language calls that are probably giving instructions on where to bunker down when the West Coast is lost.

I don't. The ringer on my phone is always off.

Unless I'm expecting a call for some idiotic bureaucratic 'reason' that precludes other forms of communication---which thankfully hasn't happened in a long time. In that case, I think they'd usually say, 'Hello, may I speak to X / is X there / is this X? ' To which I think I'd say, 'Speaking', 'Yes, this is X', 'Yes', respectively; or maybe 'Hello, yes, speaking', etc. IDK. I'd prefer to be as efficient as possible, but I do generally try to be kind and respectful towards the workers who do such jobs, especially since it's usually not their fault that they're calling me; I do say 'thanks' at the end, provided they've done a decent job.

If it's a prearranged 'video call', with my relatives for example, or my vocal/music production coach, I do say hello.
