It was the most comic-booky Superman movie I've ever seen. And I mean that from the opening with the text on the screen like text on panels setting up where we are and what we are about, into the first fight, and throughout with the more cosmic elements and goofier stuff (the big kaiju creature)....and I loved that. Seeing WB unafraid finally to lean into the comic book stuff VS the last 2 decades of more sterile "grounded" stuff.
THE HALL OF MF'IN JUSTICE YALL....holy shit I grinned.
Mister Terrific was incredible. You don't get much of Hawkgirl, except a badass scene of her dropping President Not-Netanyahu to his demise, but Mister Terrific is easily the biggest side hero character in the movie and he absolutely shines in ever moment...Edi Gathegi was awesome!
Rachel Brosnahan absolutely SELLS the Lois Lane as a hardcore reporter, while also perfectly selling the softer side that loves Superman.
I think most people called that Ultraman was Bizarro in all but name, but it's nice to see it...also the Black Hole can send him to Bizarro-world for a future appearance.
Hoult sold me Lex as an evil bastard 250%....just wow. Comic Lex on the screen in spades.
Even in the short time he was there, Anthony Carrigan was great as Metamorpho too.
KRYPTO is the bestest boy. And also a dick. But also the bestest boy.
Fillion as Guy Gardner was appropriately assholish, but knows to be a hero when the time comes. I noticed something even early on...after the reveal of the end of the krypton message Gardner closes the building in green to obscure the public and allow Superman a moment. He did that a few times and I think he perfectly embedded WHY Guy is a GL, but also why he's a dick.
There are many cinematic shots I loved, but the two best are Superman rising out of the smoke after saving the car, and the one of his chest symbol as he turns in the sky after defeating the Raptors.
The Jor-El & Lara message being ....er.....not the best for humans....was a nice little twist. We've always gone on Superman coming from benevolence (Kyrptonian parents), and raised on benevolence (Earth parents)...but this little hitch (which I admit can be changed later...The Engineer could very well have learned Kryptonian and altered the message) makes the ending SOAR....his human parents may be adoptive, but their raising of him made him who he is and that is human in all but genes. But then I also think that the message has been messed with or misinterpreted and that will come to light in Supergirl.
Ma and Pa Kent were the very beating heart of this film. They may not have had a tonne of screen time, but they were a wholesome joy every moment they were on screen. I forgot what it was like to have Ma & Pa Kent just be average Kansas farmers...just lovely. The scene where Pa and Clark chat outside is so wonderful.
SPEAKING OF WHICH! SUPERGIRL! Wooohooooooooo! I lurve me some Supergirl. And the fact that it sounds like her movie is going to be a space one? Brilliant. Just in the two minutes of screen time she had Milly Alcock nailed it!
EDIT: The ending of his new "It soothes him" video being all the home movies of the Kents' set to Iggy Pop's Punkrocker? CHEFS FUCKING KISS.
The only thing I'm middling on is the score. John Murphy, and David Fleming did a solid job and Supermans theme echoing John Williams was a stroke of brilliance, it's just the rest of the score is nothing to write home about...It's not a massive complaint mind you, just a minor one.
Can't wait to see where this all goes, and I'll be at SUPERGIRL opening day with bells on.
