What's bringing the bittersweet? For those messed up grooves that are somehow still making happy

Wut? Are you living in the Age of Apocalypse?
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Because in Philadelphia everyone gets gunned down routinely? Surprised they still have people there.

Interactive map of shootings:
https://controller.p...violence/#/2021
I was walking through some of the densest regions of the maelstrom on the left.
'In Philly, someone has been shot every day since Jan. 2' [that's from August 23rd, but afaik gun violence hasn't gone down significantly since then]
https://www.inquirer...t-20210823.html
But it's also true that only about 0.11% of the overall population has been shot so far this year. Shootings are much less common in the areas I usually frequent, but they have been spilling over even into what had seemed like some of the safest places.

That number of shootings would make anyone scared, so

I got a pretty serious promotion. I should be celebrating but my team is in crisis (best people have left so there isn't enough expertise to keep going), my industry is in crisis (massive regulatory change without the knowledge to drive it), the business is in crisis (global pandemic workforce issues), and I think I might be in crisis (see all of the above, my child is back in home school and we have covid in the house)!
So "Aaaaaarrrrrrggggggggg but I have an epic job title" I guess?

Congratulations on the epic job title, if it helps that's pretty much every industry in Britain right now so it's no better elsewhere.

If it helps, everyone is in crisis, so anything you do will be positive!

Interviewing for a job. it will use my PHD, has a minimum 30% increase over my maximum income now (I work sales so my maximum income is not guaranteed), 20 days leave and a 401k match (I have none now so even more money). Problem is, if I get they want me to move to Boston. I just signed a lease here in philadelphia! I have a friend in Boston so thats good, boston was an awesome place as far as I could see, however I aslo think Boston is much more expensive.
Renting in america is insane by the way! This county is ass backwards sometimes, In SA you can end a lease with 1 months notice. In America your on the hook for the lease till the end unless they can find a repalcement tennant. The law says they have to make a 'reasonable search'. At least my current place is somewaht reasonable and lets you buy out for 3 months rent.
So I may not even get the hob but if I do, the bittersweet.

On the one hand... that's kind of amusing.
OTOH... having to walk around that at multiple places through the city is a bit of a hassle. Not sure how dangerous it really is to bystanders.
Residents seem to be stressed out about the blatant illegally... and the noise and air pollution ('smoke and screeches across Center City').
'Turning and turning in the widening gyre'....
Looks like a police cruiser with lights lit in the middle of that illegal doughnut outside City Hall. Police officer trapped inside? Doubt they picked the lock on a police car and hotwired the lights or whatever. Or maybe a 'corrupt' cop? Wonder if they bribed them (with beers?... or doughnuts?). Or cop who just didn't want to try to take on the crowd?

Bought a new car that will fit twins & toddler better than our old one would have done (because it wouldn't have fit them really)
This is undoubtedly good and the car is lovely but we've had to take finance out and this isn't long after we finished paying the finance on the last one. We can afford it but it felt nice to have the extra money...

'Chip shortages could make Black Friday tech deals a bust
Waiting for that maximum discount may leave you empty-handed.'
https://www.pcworld....-to-expect.html
Would have been tempted to either get a high-speed external SSD, Roli Lumi to learn conventional piano quickly (I've spent thousands of hours learning to play their Seaboard keyboard, but Roli may go out of business... the Seaboards may be discontinued, and Roli claims the batteries can't be replaced---plus the firmware might no longer updated), or VR or AR headset... but I want the SSD because I've already bought too many virtual instruments and too much music software to fit on my laptop, and at this point getting more virtual instruments mainly because they're on sale and there's a slight chance I may want to use them in the future is probably being wasteful and making it harder to actually decide on what to use to make music. Not sold yet on commercially available VR/AR applications for my life though they have tremendous potential---I've read about therapists using VR to treat anxiety disorders for example, VR hypnotherapy, VR for monitoring multiple streams of information (unlimited screens in 3D space). More likely I'd get sucked into games that optimize addiction and not enlightenment. As for Lumi, I think it's most likely that if Roli goes out of business then some other company will keep producing---and updating the firmware for---the Seaboards....
OTOH chip shortages won't apply to software, which is also I think much easier to resell. I don't really 'need' more music software, but there's some that would improve my workflow: 0 latency processors so I can hear them while recording without any delay, or software that I definitely like more than what I already have. (For example, I've been making do with the Black Rooster Neve preamp emulation which adds slight delay when recording vocals, but I want to get the Burnley 0 latency Neve for recording and some of the cpu-intensive Acustica Neves which sound more like what I want.)

Looks like SSDs are no longer having supply chain issues... so I might get one during BF (for better or worse for me):
'While other core components (processors, GPUs and memory) have seen their prices go up (and up) because of the ongoing chip shortage, SSDs are one of the few that have seen a downward trend, one that we believe will continue, especially as Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the holidays approach.
[...] "prices of client SSDs will drop by 3-8% quarter-over-quarter".'
