Certain amount of luck involved. Did the pick the right antigen, does it create antibodies, does it generate enough, how long does immunity last. They will be guided by data but until the trial starts and ends and they see what results they get they can’t be certain.

The Oxford vaccine group seem to think they have a good chance. I think they are full of shit. I hope I'm wrong but I'll believe it when I see it. Academics love to blow their own trumpets, especially the ones at Oxford.

Those keeping track of The US's Corona statistics, can you explain why I keep hearing about rising or steady but high rates of new infected, yet the death toll in the US remains relatively low day to day. How is this possible? Is it a case of the virus already having killed many of the most vulnerable? Or has the US just become better at protecting the most vulnerable, even though new infections are rising? Are the numbers being fudged?

New cases seem to predominantly in the 20's and 30's age group as they begin to socialise heavily now that social distancing and lockdowns are ending. Beaches, bars, parties etc So cases are surging but the death rate is low. Problem is its unlikely to stay in that age group I would think. They will eventually infect older family memebrs.

It's speculated that's why the death toll in Germany has been comparatively low as well so far. Our first big round of infections were people who brought it back from skiing in Ischgl in Austria and the people who do that tend to be middle aged sporty types who associate mostly with their own age and interest group, so the virus spread among people who are way more likely to get through without complications. There were clusters where it made its way into retirement homes where it wrecked noticeably more havoc immediately.

Florida has had the largest one day total for new cases. 10k. TEN THOUSAND new cases ....in a day. Last Thursday, it was 5k, the Thursday before that 2.5k....you get the gist, it's exponential growth in perfect proof.

But get them beaches open right?

Fuckign hell...and we are headed into July4th weekend. This is going to get way worse for FLA.

Nevermind that, the case totals for the USA are 50k/day.

Like the United States is just a cesspool playground for this virus and NO one is even trying to stop it at any high level of govt.

The beaches aren't the hot spots. It's the bars and the house parties people have been going to - the indoor areas where we breathe in everyone's moist Corona breath for hours.

The beaches get a ton of publicity because it's silly easy to tell if there's a ton of people on the beach. But it's sort of taking the focus off where they need to be - the indoor assemblies, prisons, and nursing homes. Meat packing plants too.

I think of us as still being in the first wave. And it's not going to end soon because Arizona, Texas, Florida, and some smaller states are getting worse rather than better.

It's probably going to accelerate in the next month and a half given how weak and ignorant the state and federal responses are now.

I'm beyond furious and in this dead realm of disgust + do what I can to boost people around me in NY (safely protesting, helping disabled clients, continuing to support local businesses over big companies, and masking up).

Pubs in the UK are back open soon so you just know a further surge is coming. The scenes from back home in Dorset absolutely destroy the notion that you can rely on the common sense of the British people to get past this.

Yeah, the pubs reopening will be a disaster, I mean, people are thick selfish wankers at the best of times, give them a few pints and just watch the idiocy fueled pandemic fire explode

I know so many people that are booking tables with great excitement for this weekend, I would love it (Keegan style) LOVE IT, if I could go to the rugby club with my mates, watch the footy, get day drunk, pizza, into town and get mangled. But I'm not entertaining the notion of going near a fucking pub any time soon.

I want to see my mates, zoom calls and quizzes are fun but just not the same as good rambling chinwag in the pub. But I can do without.

I don't want to sound like one of those good awful memes (I'm fully aware I'm going to) Our grandparents survived the fucking blitz, total blackout every night, the were on rations for years after the war. People can't suck it up and stay the fuck at home for a few months??

Fuck people

This.

Boyfriend had to explain this to his friendship group this week (all of whom are highly educated, highly paid individuals, one of whom is a GP). They were straight in with the "let's go for a walk in the Peaks and then to the pub" and got all bent out of shape when he said that he and I would come for the walk, but then head home. It's like looking around and going "How are people this stupid?"

Also, we had to make a trip to IKEA this week (item wasn't available for click and collect) - the way people are point blank not distancing in there (where there is more than enough space to do so) made both of us even more sure we're not going near any shop, pub or restaurant for a good long while.

Indoor dining at restaurants/bars/pubs is now being pointed to as one of the highest correlations to getting COVID-19.

Yeah, when we go to the mall it's like 50% of the people act like COVID never happened and the rest of us are dodging, wiping down and hand sanitising like crazy.

Haven't gone to the extent of masks yet but that's more for keeping others safe from you rather than the other way round.

I do agree but bombing raids and absence of food is so much more tangible than an invisible virus that many people don't even notice they have. Who decided to phrase it as "Super Saturday"? Super Spreader Saturday more like. It's all bonkers but I don't know anyone partaking. Apart from hoping to avoid a second wave I really hope all the restaurants that reopen will carry on doing take out so I can carry on having treat meals at home!

Here's a doctor explaining how people who present as asymptomatic may have "ground glass" lungs despite seeming to be asymptomatic.

https://twitter.com/...8796279809?s=19

"It's important to keep in mind that GGOs aren't specific to COVID-19 and can be seen in so many different settings, says Dr. Possick. GGOs in chest CT scans can also indicate congestive heart failure, inflammatory interstitial lung diseases, and diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (bleeding into the airspaces of the lungs), among other issues. But one of the most common diagnosis for GGOs is viral pneumonias, most often caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, and coronavirus.

In terms of COVID-19, Dr. Cortopassi explains GGOs on a CT scan are indicative of COVID-19-related pneumonia, or lung inflammation caused by the viral infection. (It's important to note, however, that not all patients with COVID-19 will go on to develop pneumonia, says Dr. Cortopassi.)"

Just had the worst day out in public experience. I consider myself pretty relaxed about the virus. I'm not at risk, public spread is very limited and I'm very aware of my surroundings. But this was awful.

My stepbrother really wanted us to go see a movie together, we hadn't seen each other since Christmas. He's got mental health issues and we mostly only bond over movies and comics, so I ordered tickets for the rerun of The Dark Knight in one of the only cinemas that are open in Copenhagen.

That cinema is in a mall. Now maybe it's just because it was raining all day but the mall was ridiculously packed. Like uncomfortably, anxiety inducingly stuffed with people seen from a post Covid perspective. Nobody was keeping distance. Nobody were being safe.

And then it got worse.

My stepbrother really wanted to eat at a buffet place. A buffet. During a pandemic. This particular one was placed between a main thoroughfare. And the health and safety precautions were less than adequate. So now we're eating cheap food, a hundred people have breathed on, sitting too close to untrustworthy mouthbreathers, while people are practically running past us, laughing, shoving.

My stepbrother was farely oblivious to all this and he kept touching stuff he shouldn't after cleaning his hands and clearly weren't great at actually thinking about safety. Which was making me itch because besides mental illness he also has bad health and often gets colds, the flu and even pneumonia.

I just got home and I had to take a bath Ace Ventura style, scrubbing myself while crying in the shower. I feel like I'll never be clean again. I may burn my clothes.

Dark Knight is still a fantastic film though.

That all sounds.. horrible. I went into town briefly this morning - there were people queuing to get their hair cut.

I had absolutely no desire to check out pubs or any other shops, just got home again. Just because they've opened everything up doesn't mean it all disappeared overnight. It would be typical to go through weeks of this to then catch it and get it really bad right when everyone's feeling all chilled about it.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Seeing people today has convinced me that Denmark will get a second wave. Mother Nature will punish us for not understanding the lesson the first time round.

It’s interesting, since I loved states to a new apartment and I still have no summer clothes I did a big shop this yesterday, Costco and Macy’s. It’s wierd how easy it is to fall back to this is normal. Shopping is normal. Still I think my cousin and I had pretty good spacing from other people. We both wore make, I take travel size hand sanitizer with me. Always wash my hands before eating or drinking. Whenever I see a few hand sanitizer dispenser I help myself.

Was wierd trying on clothes, how many people have tried them on before me? Still I think people over things remain the biggest risk but I’ll let my clothes sit for a few days before wearing them.
