We would have also accepted any Malazan book cover.

Yep, still holding it down in Seattle. Life is pretty good considering the circumstances. Abyss hurt my feelings though. What if you gaze into the Abyss and the abyss disregards you?

Silly question, but when I check SE's Facebook page (of which I can see very little as I do not have a Facebook account) and his author page, there is no crossover with this place. Why is this so?

I know this forum used to be printed on the covers of the books but that ceased a while back and I have no doubt that contributed to the slowing of traffic to here, but is there a reason why?
What about the Reddit group?

Did we piss someone off?

No but we have no 'official' status or controls. If we all up and went went white supremacist one day, or were replaced by a set who did, there's no real risk by association.
The days when the site was on the covers was a younger, more innocent time.

Also the Malazan Reddit sub has a lot of people who think we're elitist fuckers...I mean we ARE, but they don't have to SAY that out loud.

There was that one thread about TtH and comparing it to some others work - cannot remember who or what - that was supposed to have annoyed SE and led to us with the name the Scary Mob at one point haha but don't think there has been any other drama.

Someone compared TtH to James Joyce Novel, Ulysses?

But his comparison was also riddled with very poor historical revisionism (Irish nationalism) on the front of the 1916 rebellion as I recall. I think a few of us took issue with his tone and strident insistence that me and cougar? were bigots or some other such nonsense off screen.

Suffice to say our issue was not in the comparison of Erikson to Joyce (which I gather Steve found enormously flattering) our issue with the presentation of said argument and the utter bollocks it devolved into. Alas as far as I know SE took it as us bashing the guy for making the comparison.

We totally are, because we were fans before it was cool. :)
...tho many non-Malazafans seem to think that about ALL, forumites or not.

Nah, the 'scary mob' was a fond nickname SE gave us well before the Ulysses thing.

He did but iirc Hetan and/or Mal or someone else explained and all was made well. There was no 'split'. At a guess the publishers just pointed out to SE and other authors that fans are awesome and organized fans are awesomest but it's risky to give them any official status because people are insane and do dumb shit that gets 'attached' to the author if they don't keep a wee bit of separation in place.

Darujhistan as Dublin was I think either the name or sub header name of the thread.

Ah! Good old forum history... like the no longer real back up board 😭.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Aye, when I was thinking about the thread I could remember it had something to do with Dublin but that was about it.

That thread still exists, for those curious enough to go looking through several years of forum backlog. But most of the egregious stuff was pruned by mods at the time, so it's probably pretty disappointing if you're looking for top drama llamas. Great if you want to see Cougar delivering scholarly smackdown or my best joke of 2009, though.

I don't think the forum not being officially printed on the books has anything to do with us, it's just something publishers don't do anymore nowadays. It was a cool way of marketing and fostering a fanbase back in the 00s, but nowadays social media platforms are so much more dominant that there's not much benefit to it, and as Abyss says probably still some risk they'd rather not take for no gain.
