I wonder how they'd market it if it does come to fruition. "based on the novel by Steven Erikson( Posted Image)" unfortunetly have the same significance to the public as say Tom Clancy Or Robert Ludlum. Be cool if it happened though

Prehaps but quite a lot of the chain is spent in open terrain and wide rolling hills. Prehaps NZ would be good for some of the river battles - especially when they are right at the edge of the forest. I think Oz would be best for the final streach to Aren.

TOTALLY agree with Folken Fanel!!!
it should stay long, otherwise the essence of the story will be lost!!!

I'd be a little concerned about "Deadhouse Gates" being made into a movie. First off it's an epic scale picture, which demands a lot of money. We're talking "Braveheart" sized budget, about 90-100 million adjusted for inflation. Sure, you could make it smaller by focusing the camera in, keeping the extra numbers low but I tend to think that it cheats the viewers and they resent it. Secondly, the ending is not very happy. In fact, it's downright grim. Rows of crosses, stretching into the distance? I'm not saying that it has to have a happy ending ("Braveheart" didn't), but it might help.

please understand...even though the current script will pan out to over 3 hours page-wise, the final script will not be anywhere near that long (and yes, i wish it could challenge 'return of the king' for length too), but i wanted to be comprehensive with the first draft...after all, it's far easier to remove and rearrange stuff than to have to add new material...the continuity issues alone would be daunting...

...the actors should be chosen for character rather than looks

Monty Python r00lz! Diss it not! And yes, English and Irish accents are the best in the world! It was a grand thing to be English when I was in the US, and all the hot chicks were suckers for English accents!

Oh, don't get me wrong. I have no wish to slander his character but I do question his veracity on this issue.

Which battle is least important to the story?:
To be able to best give my awnser I reread the three battles. (even had to buy the book again as I have a misprint which is fun but turns out there were some missing pages)

All three battles perform a function in my opinion, what it boils down to is what function is the least important. First you have the battle of Sekala. An introduction of the desperate army where coltaine can show of his tactical skills. This is a testing of strength. Then when the enemy thinks to be full strength there is Gelor Ridge. This battle sets up Vathar. Having lost the apatite to fight honorable agains coltaine after this lost battle. Without Gelor it would seem that from one lost battle the enemy will resort to try and massacre Coltaine's chain. And there is Vathar, a battle where death is close, the battle unfair and desperate. The death of the warlocks, the seperator of survivors from refugees.

With Vathar the sad climax of the sotry this can't be left out. This leaves either Sekala or Gelor as least important. Lull gets wounded and bgins having visions after Gelor. And at Gelor Duiker fights along with the army. Sekala is the more exiting battle though.

Hmm taking a roundabout route but I would probably have to agrea with marduk that Gelor is the least important. Neither army does anything significant. There is no clear victor, the story just continues. It could be fun to have lull have his face wounded form one scene to the next. Having him say he was wounded in the last battle. Readers of the books will know which battle.

Eh, it HAS to have a dark ending. Something else would be blasphemy.

The other difference between LotR and MBotF is that LotR has been out for ages now. MBotF has been out just 5-6years now. Also LotR's scope in terms of the storyline and characters cannot be compared to MBotF. There's so much information in these books. I just hope Patch does a wonderful job with teh script. I really don't want the movie to be butchered up

THe CoD's a tragedy... no happy ending!!

Personally i think a happy ending woudl be terrible.. but perhpas the end could be lightened with duikers ressurection and the two dogs as well, with teh promise of revenge in the sequel Posted Image

as to russel crowe as coltiane, i dont think so, hed be mroe suited for the role of bult... nether, nil and sormo will prob be played by unknowns as they r both 9-10 yr olds, bu as brood says the malazan actors thing has been debated to death b4, look for a thread in the pphoenix inn, or create a ne wone to try and get everyones opinions on actors if u want.
