Oh, OK thanks Abeleyn. Vin Diesel? Come on people we want this film to look GOOD...
Vin Diesel is like the new Arnold Schwarzennegger. Never doing anything, but good at shooting a gun. Or perhaps the Hugh Grant of Action Movies. Always the same person, not really that good...

My thought for the final scene would be the two malazans pulling the wagon down the road with the crucified soldiers. Camera pulls back and into credits. Priceless.

Anthony Hopkins as Duiker? Coltaine's a tough one though....I'm risking a LOT here just suggesting it but Russel Crowe?
As for Sormo, Nil and Nether....I can't begin to imagine who. It's my weakness for mages. Maybe Thandie Newton as Nether...she was Dame Vaako in "The Chronicles of Riddick". Not a bad performance.
Possibly Izabella Scorupco (the helicopter pilot in Reign of Fire) as the Marine Duiker had the hots for.

Hmmm truth is I don't really care if there is realy a movie or not. If there is I wanted to know if I could get some info on the visual style. If there isn't no problem.
And what are you saying that Patch has a sketchy/patchy past with no other corroberation than his word? Trying to make fun of forum members here strining us along in the movie illusion. Sounds like a challenge! Defend thyself Patch!

So now we are reserving characters for when we become Malazies? *Calls Rake, 'cause it would be cool*

I agree with imperial historian.
Coltaine is the strong silent type and Bult is the more friendly/talkative side of the Wickan leadership.

@Lenh
i'm very good at diplomacy...and by the time this project's turn comes up, i hope to have already had 2 successful movies (also written by Steven) and a sci-fi TV show (yes, also Steven). Also, his name will be more familiar in America by then...but, I'd like to keep this as far away from hollywood as possible...not that I want it to be low-budget, but remember that the majority of the money in American movies goes to the stars (and in some cases to special effects companies)...I will definitely lean towards actors who are less well-known but who fit the part (of course, if I can find name actors for particular roles I will not shy away, but it is not my expectation)...CoD is a very personal story in some respects...I have thought about physically making the movie as I have done the adaptation...yes there are some scenes that will demand some serious cgi work, but then again, there are a lot that are very close shots...it will be fine...
As for the end, have no fear...the end will be as it should be...there will be a web site within the next couple of months, as time allows...
@mezla
Gellor wil not be skipped...Oh, and i've signed Orlando Bloom as Duiker (just kidding)
@to all
what is it with you folks? I haven't made the first one yet and you're debating the sequel...
later,

first of all, i would love to find a way to include some fans as extras...
and second, i know that generally authors must give up the rights to the world...however, that will not be the case here.
now, for those of you interested...if it were up to you, which battle (Sekala, Gelor or Vathar) is least important to the story? i am curious to see if others would choose as we have...

I RAIL......
RAIL at Erickson's relative unpopularity. He's WAAAAAAAY better than Tolkien and in a uperlative dimension to George RR Martin. He's bound to become well-known soon enough and it's going to come as a flood. I'd hate for hollywood to botch-up one of the films as it would taint his reputation. Like Lord of the Rings (which was still good), SE needs someone who's fanatical about his work FOREMOST. We should make use of the fact that he's still alive and writing and have him in on it. He BEST knows what sort of imagery to present since he created it. Hollywood is all about money and politics and NOONE can convince me otherwise. In fact, even LoTR cuts out some important parts JUST so as to rake in another bombshell from the so-called 'extended DVD'. Revolting.
As much as I've been obsessed by the though of SE movies I fear for the loss of his epic artistry to hollywood's common, mindless, run-of-the-mill, one-dimensional BORE.
This BETTER be good. BETTER be.

WWOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!
My day is made. I am getting on the phone and making other people's.
@ Patch: you gonna keep us on the inside thread right?
And, my big question: what is SE like in real life?

we'll be suggesting The Rock and Sly Stalone next

well, my bacon is saved by the master...phew.
ok...australia was selected by me as the best place to film as i have been there (and it came to mind long before we decided that Chain could work as a movie)...
as for GotM...there was a script of GotM once, penned by Steven and Cam Esslemont...no one is sure what happened to it...it was based solely in Darujistan and was written as a comedy...i will revisit GotM after I finish this script and send it to the readers...however, i must say that the novels are not necessarily in sequence, and though they relate to one another, they were intended to be able to stand alone...this is also how we envisioned the movies...
@andarist...no, i don't think so...if i am correct in assuming you mean the scene where whiskyjack's squad and duiker are in the pheonix inn in darujistan...no, we have the final scene mapped out already...in fact, it was Steven's suggestion of what the final scene would look like that motivated Rick and I to go 'hey, what if....'
Skinwalkers was written by Steven, Patrick Carroll and Mark Paxton McRae...the script was what first turned my mind to film, because i saw the entire movie in my head as i read, and pledged that if i was ever to make a movie, this would be it...maybe i'll post the synopsis (if you want)...same with Big Bluff...
@brukhalian...CoD is solely about Duiker and the march (and a bit about the coastal marines)...long discussions were held to decide exactly what to include...
anyway, i've gone on long enough...if i missed anything let me know...
cheers all,

Vin Diesel is hot, hot like fire. If he was right here right now i'd show you just how hot i think he is. Prrrrrrrr! I'd watch any film he's in, and i buy them jost cos he's in them *realises she's become a fanatical stalking fan, tries to calm herself down*
@ Tiste Simeon: tut tut. He's not crap, unless crap is the new word for ice-cool. Rippling muscles, sexy husky voice, bald, what else does a guy need?
*Bribes his l33t n1nj4'5 to attack and kill*
I think Urban is a great idea for Coltain, i'd cry for hours and have to be carried out of the cinema on a stretcher if he did.

murrin has the right of it...only duiker can tell this story...and as for timetable... hmmm...well, we're working on another two projects that have priority at the moment...but to be honest, i'd like to see this in production late 2006 (which is like tomorrow, in movie terms) with a summer 2007 release...i have been working on 2 others of steven's works for three years now, and we won't film the first til next summer, so much as i hate it, 'chain of dogs' will have to wait it turn

Despite the wonders of make-up I don't think the age issue is a trivial one. I do accord Val Kilmer due respect and I have no doubt his skills can extend to portraying an individual twice his age. However, an Imperial Historian seems to me to be possessed of a certain 'settled' calibre that is better authenticated than simulated....it just feels better. I just saw Gladiator again last night and I now see why Sir Jacobi materialised in my mind even as I read DG: that settled, assured knowledge, the calm embers that tell of a fire that had once raged...and, like Duiker, could be stoked back to life, if necessary.
If you said Val for Coltaine now then I'm more amenable...of course he can change his persona (i.e., he's an excellent actor) but actors build a repertoire; and that creates certain anticipations that do labour upon the imagination. Whereas I probably haven't seem as many Kilmer films as you hombres have I nonetheless cannot recall ever seeing Val portray an Old man (for any protracted period). His build seems a little too Spartan. Him stepping down a few physical notches can't beat someone who's already up their for their age (and acting) category.
