I think I have very vague memories of the first book (Earthsea rings a bell). Was it about a boy who went off to learn magic, and all you had to do to control an object or change its shape or form was to learn its true name?
I had to read it for English when I was about 11 or so. I seem to remember it being slow but worth it... didn't even know there were others.
Course, maybe I'm thinking of the wrong book.

Hey California is my favourite place in the world! I'll be going there first! I am (in reality) working on a camp up near Yosemite, near a tow called Oakhurst. It rocks!

as a recent discoverer of these fookin brilliant books got to say the idea of a film adaptation has me wishin for a time machine. its good to have the huge amount of cynicism because this usually prevents a shoddy film, altho reading this thread i cant help but have faith in the almighty patch who must now surely have the right to call dragon as his soletaken form if a mad scientist actually finds a way of doing it (they can clone sheep remember....).
absolutely agree that first introduction of malazan world to public has to be big, loud and proud, cinema, however itd be unwise to completely discount introducing other storythreads using other means (animatrix anyone?), or even in tv series (Band of brothers is maaaajorly good).
sorry for the long post, i humbly await more news mr patch/dragon

i think people are losing a bit of perspective here. There is no way ( and I hope i am wrong here) that this can be a LOTR style film the backing, financing and audience just isn't there. The ideal here would be to use a film to fill in gaps in the story show the smaller battles and so forth. How about some scripts set in the Malazan world but not of the books....... the story of Quick Ben. The Formation of the Bridgeburners?

hi,
being a great fan of the books i can't believe there are accually serious plans of making a chain of dogs movie!
i don'know if you allready found a director but might i suggest: Tom Clegg?
He has made very good series of movies "Sharpe", about a small company of English soldiers led by Richard Sharpe (played by Sean Bean, who was Boromir in LOTR) in the years around 1800 in the war between Spain, France and England.

See, that suddenly makes a lot of sense... And that Sci-Fi thing sounds pretty awesome, Patch! Keep us informed.quote:Originally posted by David Cowie:

I like that twelve feet stick. I want one. I have read the Earthsea Quartet a couple of times. The first two books are fairly good quality, the third is OK, and in the fourth nothing actually happens. It is just boring.
Note that there is a long gap between the first three (published 1968 -1972) and the fourth (1990). Some time in those 18 years LeGuin said to herself "Hang on, I'm a woman. What on Earth was I on about with all that stuff about women being feeble creatures who are totally unsuited to practising magic? Next time I'll sort it out!"
Or so I'm told.

My favourite storyline in DG was actually Icarium/Mappo but the Chain of Dogs was certainly awesome and would make a great film.

coltaine has to have crow wings tatooed on either side of his face .............. then he would be cool as well as incredibly rude
