Posted Image Well, finally decided to go back and re-read DG and enjoying it immensely. MoI is still my favourite of the books but the Chain of Dogs always stuck in my mind. As for the movie, well, I am sure I echo the sentiments of others and pray that it is done well and it is done justice. It could, in the wrong hands, be awful...

Where LotR presented a challenge like going to the moon, MBotF presents a challenge like going to Pluto!
It's impossible to make a movie out of all of these books. Chain of Dogs, alone, to make a good movie would have to be very long. There is a lot of complex stuff in Chain of Dogs that'll confuse the audience, most of whom will not have read the books. Such as the first battle, when the ghosts of the land, or w/e it was I don't remember been a few months now, came and helped the Chain win.
Nonetheless Chain of Dogs is probably the only part of MBotF that could be made into an effective movie, and possibly Icarium and Mappo's story. Both would make great philosophical movies.

Tiste, re: Earthsea - I wouldn't go there. It's a sore spot for LeGuin fans (and that's about all you need to know to judge what it was like, heh).

Earthsea was a TV series? Was it any good?

Don't know about John Williams for the score. I see it as more of an intimate soundtrack. Like Gladiator, or Hero. Tan Dun (Hero) would be good, he's very East-meets-West, maybe with some Arab influences? Evocative of loneliness, the wind, vast open land etc?

Kalam = The dude who played Cat in Red Dwarf and the leader of the Blood Pack in Blade 2. I think I've said that before, though.

Who do I have to kill or sleep with to be in this film? Posted Image

Sadist like Patch don't need ideas... they just need victims. I am putting myself forward, for the good of this board, to be a victim for Patch... or something like that... *cough*

Gotta protest there. If any adaptation, than please to the big screen! TV-series adaptations almost always end up looking cheesy... Plus there would be serious limitations to the degree of realism that could be shown in order to be broadcasted. I am happy with the choice they've made, and am convinced that the movie is going to be great (couldn't be anything else, with me being an extra in it Posted Image)!

And yes, if I see glass of water it is half full Posted Image

Earthsea: the abomination of fantasy novels adapted to screen. Even LeGuin herself complained about the makers ruining her novels with that terrible mini-series. Some incredibly brainless modifications to LeGuin's brilliant original plots.

What a great project! Hope it gets made and shown in the States!

Wes Studi, though? Wasn't Coltaine huge? A barbarian? Why not The Rock for Coltaine? Aside from budgetary constraints, that is....

@Patch- I'm rather skeptical of the project, for me, every movie made from an adaptation of a book I liked hasn't been completely up to snuff.. I did enjoy LOTR but there were some things about it I didn't enjoy at all.

As for actors, I'd strongly suggest getting some Native Amercian actors to play the Wickans. Though he may be a bit old for the part, hands down I'd strongly recommend Wes Studi for the role as Coltaine. Wes was the bad guy in Last of the Mohicans and he also played the sheriff in the televised adaptation of the Hillerman novels. I think he's a good actor.

Don't get hooked on name brand actors, there may be some untouched talent out there, you and Steve just need to be there for the script readthroughs and the auditions, you and he have a vision of what the characters are like, so see what's out there. Test the waters, hopefully something will come up. I'd never heard of Viggo Mortensen until LOTR, I thought he played a great Aragorn.

I still stand by my recommendation of Wes Studi for Coltaine.

As for the battles, I wish you would include them all, I can't recollect much, but I think Gelor Ridge is one you can spend the least amount of time on... Some heavy editing I'm sure, you've got to be precise and pick out pivotal points that reveal the story and the character developement. No easy task I know.

Unfortunately, that's all I have for muse right now.

Cheers!
E

I previously recommended John Williams for the soundtrack. I just want to add that he did the soundtrack for War of the Worlds and it was kick ass.
