ok. I have just read 54 pages of thread. It took me all day (I'm at work so i'm not crazy), and I have this to say:
Patch has given us virtually NOTHING! It's barely an idea... discussions and script drafts!! Patch, I think you are honour bound to provide IN-DEPTH information on the projects you are working on that are preventing CoD from progressing! I don't want to seem pushy but you did get everyone excited, we need to know whats going on.
EVERY project that is being worked on/looked at/thought about that involves SE, ICE, MBotF or anything else even remotely connected should be posted here.
Please.

cold iron: i thought you said you read the thread through. chain cannot become a movie/series until i have the necessary funding. there is also the fact that SE wants to start with gardens. add to this the fact that i am already working on two SE projects ('the dark' and 'big bluff'). it is my hope that revenues from the 'the dark' serial web broadcast will enable us to pursue the other projects independently of regular funding channels (which will demand the stories fit the standard models) and thus give us creative independence with a decent budget. if you have any better ideas about how to do this, i'm all ears.
you're welcome

Don't know if this has been done before, but why not set up a donations option, or something like that. I would be more than willing to donate money for this more than worthy cause, and, I am sure, there are many others on this forum that feel the same way.
Can't hurt, right?
If this has been considered and discarded for whatever reasons, please excuse my ignorance.

Ok that is pretty much the answer I was looking for. Clarity you see. Distinctness, explicitness... Precision, plainness and palbability!
We give so much and ask so little.
Thank you.

Thank you.

What do we give? Only the most important, most valuable, most coveted gift known to man! What am I on about? Why love of course! Ok so it's mixed in with a few death threats but I know he feels it. We hang on his every word like junkies at a dealers house. Like the devout in St. Peter's square. Like puppies at a tennis centre. Like wankers at a strip club. Like gamblers at a bookies. Ok im out of similies but I'm sure my meaning has been thoroughly understood.

I think Raz just set the record for highest concentration of smilies in-text. Too much caffiene for one so young *sigh*
I hate to pour tepid water (no cold stuff here in the Sweaty State) on the donations idea, but do you have any concept of how much even a short film costs if you want to do it properly? Ack!
I'm just going to donate via "The Dark", local bookstores and PS Publishing. Maybe everyone else here should too ...
Is there any way to test the waters (if you are committed to going live-action) with a short film excerpt of a minor thread from the novels, or maybe a single critical scene? Who knows, maybe it would attract notice. The film industry is always looking for the next decent original idea, so they can flog the heck out of it.

the major reason...the one over-riding reason why you won't see a major american studio do a malazan movie is because in order for that to happen, both SE and ICE would have to sign away their rights to the series. what this means is that the studio would own the right to make chain of dogs a comedy, or a romance, or, gods forbid, a slasher flick...in short, anything they felt would turn a buck...anomander rake could be played by chris rock *shudders* in a rousing musical...so, anything i pursue will include both authors as producers, thus allowing them to retain their ownership...anyway, y'all will just have to trust me to find ways to get around whatever obstacles, and find creative ways to finance the projects.

What about the Europeans? They do good stuff these days. Eastern Europe is cheap to film in. Russia has bucketloads of variable landscapes and is cheap. Also has the Mafia, but you can't have everything.

If nothing else, the language would be ... spicy. Maybe a porno?

Creative ways? Maybe a partnership with the Colombian cartels ...?

Major product placement? "Need to run a thousand leagues while fighting hostile natives? Try Pepsi Max! ..."
Bollywood musical version? The thought of hundreds of extras bursting into perfectly choreographed (BAD could do the choreo) song and dance during a major battle makes me giggle just a little ...

But seriously, yeah it's a major mission if you want to retain creative control. Perhaps Luxembourg could come to the party? Dog Soldiers was made with their assistance. Just an idea.

I want the movie done properly and well but a Monty Pythonesque parody of it later on would be funnny.
