I think he means shorten it to a movie of 3+ hours of Erikson goodness. You really think that the Chain of Dogs storyline could be shortened to less than one of the LotR films?

I would expect a SE movie with any decency in it to last at least as long as the entire extended trilogy put together... Yes, I want a 12 hour long film, with non stop action and SE goodness!

the movie is on a back burner while we tool up for the dark...as i've said before...also, i am considering going back to gardens for a script, as there was one originally (written by SE and ICE as a...comedy)...which i think is a great idea, but neither have a copy, so it's back to square 1...
...and...for chain, i think the story needs to be shortened considerably...and maybe changed to be even more focussed on duiker...exchanging some of what's in the book for some extra stuff on duiker himself...comments, anyone?

Seeing that SE is doing the script - at least partially no? - then we can hardly blame the movie of moving too far away from the authors intention can we? I for my part trust your judgement, and I think it would be irrational at best to expect the movie to follow the exact track of the book...
Don't get me wrong though, if one does a Peter Jackson one and do something similar to his complete destruction of Faramir's personality, then I will find your address and give it to Abyss.

Dunno about MORE Duiker, but certainly MORE from Duikers' viewpoint. Maybe you could set up Duikers' and the situations' background in a big narrative prologue, a la Cate Blanchett in "Fellowship of the Ring". Would certainly set it out for the non-fans quickly without wrecking the main flow of the story of the Chain of Dogs. We don't NEED to know about Duiker, just enough to appreciate his narrative of the story. Hell, maybe even do a voiceover narrative by the actor of Duiker and "quicktime" scenes to fast forward some bits through the film.
I'm also a big fan of short poignant scenes being done slow-mo with beautiful music in the background, a la "Hero".
Also, has anyone else noticed how the 3 different CSI series have the different lighting and colours? the original (Las Vegas) is all dark, with bright lights. The day stuff is shot straight up. CSI Maimi is all yellows and bright sunlight. CSI NY is all blues and greys with dim light for that claustrophobic New York grime feeling. Loved the faux-sepia tone in "Se7en" as well. Maybe the Chain could have different cinematography in a similar style, to denote place and mood changes in the story?

Cheers,
La Sombra, always wanted to direct ...

The movie will be about the chain of dogs, and not a film of one plot line in a book. Duiker as focul point makes perfect sense. Take out the bits that refer to goings on outside the chain, like the path of hands, because the movie won't be a tale of the MBotF. Sure, we'd all love it to be, but that's not what it sounds like.
More Duiker, memories of his soldiering days, being taken from the ranks, maybe even how he ended up in the ranks in the first place, sounds good.

Not to offend anyone, but I really don't believe that Chain of Dogs would make a good movie without funding that only a major studio could provide(not confident about it even if they get a blank check). Also, if the film gets around the 90th minute mark, don't expect anyone to see anything different from a "13th warrior" remake(which unfortunately, the chain of dogs story will come out to, taken out of context).
We all know how good the books are, but I still doubt I'd go see this movie.

Well, the major studios have poured millions into absolute drivel before, and will continue to do so. Perhaps, the fates willing, if one of them sees a quality screenplay, they might actually have a go. According to the law of averages, eventually they have to get it right. LotR anyone?
